MacBook :: Screen Has Been Malfunctioning After A Period Of Use?

Feb 27, 2012

The screen turns red striped and you can still see the desktop in the background and it freezes up. I think it may be due to over heating because after forcing it to shut down it will restart after a short period. But if you try to restart it quickly it will beep at you. The laptop is about four years old but is used quite a bit. I try to keep it from being too beat up in transport but mostly it just sits on my desk. One thing that has changed is that I have been shutting it down every night before bed where I used to leave it running near constantly. The problems have only started after the new routine.

MacBook Air :: Selective Re-installation Using Utilities Disc / Repair Or Mend Malfunctioning ICal?

Aug 1, 2008

I've been having problems with iCal and would like to reinstall it using Utilities Disc 1 with the Superdrive. However, there only appears to be an option to reinstall ALL the bundled software, at which point I've aborted the reinstallation process. Sledgehammer to crack a nut! It's only iCal I'm having trouble with (e.g searches not clearing down, "today" button greys out.) If it's not possible to reinstall just iCal from disc, does anyone know a way to "repair or mend" a malfunctioning iCal?

MacBook Pro :: SSD Degradation Over An Extended Period Of Time?

May 31, 2010

Hey everyone, so I keep seeing posts about how much SSDs degrade over the first week/two after using an SSD (one that comes WITH the MBP). However, how much do they degrade after...say....6 months-1 year (or even longer)? I know they are still new hardware, but I'm sure some people have an idea. Is it really THAT significant of a speed and performance decrease?

PowerPC :: Dead Ibook Or Just Malfunctioning OS?

Nov 13, 2010

I have a 5 year old Ibook G4, which I belive just quit on me 4 nights ago. Ive had problems with it the last couple of months, like spotlight not longer working, the wifi indicatior, batteri indicator and the clock dissapeard from the top hand right corner.. and could not seem to get them turned on again. What happend; I was going to watch a movie with VLC, which kept switching itself of, I tried to restart it several times,. I then restarted the whole computer, but it would not boot up to the OS, but instead it was a black screen with a few lines written, but it did not stay on long enough that I could see what was written. Afterwards the window with MacOSX is starting up.. and the regular light blue screen. Then the MacOSX "tablet" dissapeard, and all that where visible was the light blue screen, and the mouse courser.. I could not turn up or down the brighness of the screen, nor would the volume. I restartet the machine 3-4 times but the same results. Tried the morning after, but to no use. I did download a Flash blocker program 2 days prioer to this happening, but I dont think that would "kill" of the Mac. I did try to restart it after some advice on another board, with holding the Shift button in.. this is what happend.

Darwin/BSD(m192k.studeby.ntnu.no)(console)
login:
password:

Then I wrote some jibberish as login and password.. it just keeps repeating itself over and over again. I pulled out the network cable, and restart.. and this appears:

Uninet: monitor linkstatus, link is down
My name - ibook - g4. local (console)
Login:
Password:

Also, I held in apple+s and wrote /sbin/fsck - fy, let it run through and it said: Found 34 files, should be 35. HD was sucessfully reparied. Mac HD appears OK. Then I rebooted. all that happens is I get the light blue screen, and the mouse courser.. which works fine. What has happend to my machine? Is it dead? It's only 5 years old.. it has had such a short life.

PowerPC :: G5 Malfunctioning Using DVI - HDMI Cable?

Sep 14, 2008

My Power Mac G5 is connected to my Sony HDTV using a brand new DVI-HDMI cable ($80 at Radio Shack). The second I plugged it in, both the TV and the Monitor went black. I only had picture for a couple minutes in 3 - 5 second intervals. It never straightened itself out. I restarted, same thing. Has this happened to anyone? It's as if the TV was drawing power away from my Apple Cinema display (non-HD...the older one). Heres my computer info:

OS X :: Trackpad And Keyboard Malfunctioning After Waking Up From Sleep?

Aug 14, 2009

Okay, I closed my display on my MBP and it went to sleep then about ten minutes later I came back to it to check my mail and when I opened it back up it came out of sleep mode the normal dialogue box came up asking for my password and when i typed it in only every third key press was registered. So I just had to be persistent and i was able to enter in my password and it worked, however then it went to my desktop and I went to open mail and the trackpad wasn't working at all. I used spotlight to open activity monitor and check to see if something wasn't responding but everything looked fine, then after that I then force quitted activity monitor and relaunched finder and the trackpad still didn't work so I just restarted and now everything is fine but I am wondering what happened because I would prefer this to not happen when I really need to use my computer, So does anyone have any ideas of what might have gone wrong.

Applications :: All Browsers Malfunctioning - Page Fail To Load

Feb 23, 2010

All of a sudden every one of my browsers has problems browsing sites, particularly with web-apps. My primary browser has been chrome, with safari as secondary. The problem manifests in Chrome as pages that fail to load. Examples would be gmail and some torrent sites. Other times, I get onto the sites, but when I use a search function, it stops and fails. I've also tried safari (tries for a bit then crashes), firefox (refuses to start now) and Opera. Opera seems to work, somewhat at least.

I've already tried some things - thought it was a plugin problem since it affected all of the browsers so I basically deleted every one I could find and got fresh versions. No dice. In fact, when I throw out the latest Flash plugin, it seems to improve things, then I run into sites requiring flash, so I get it and things stop working. Tried repairing permissions on the hard drive - brings up a bunch of corrections all concerning flash. Tried deleting every browser and installing a fresh copy - no dice either.

Finally tried installing Snow Leopard again - not completely fresh, did preserve my profiles and files and just set up the OS. Since this seems also to affect stuff like taking a time-machine backup. Tried 3x to take a backup, and it stops after 2-3 gigs and becomes really really slow. Also, the whole OS seems to slow down - freezing at times - when I have the browsers going.

OS X :: Time Machine Preparing For An Extended Period?

Jan 28, 2009

I use Firewire 800, and my external has 80GB free on it. Both it and my iMac's drives are 320GB. What's with the extended period of preparation, going on 15 minutes now, maybe longer. Backup still didn't begin, this never used to happen me before. I only backed up 2 days ago?

Also, why when I click the Time Machine menubar item to open Time Machine prefs does the DVD (iLife '09) in my optical drive make a noise as if it's being accessed? It spins up a little too. Seems very odd, and it's not a coincidence, it happens exactly when I try to open Time Machine prefs from its menubar item. I could do it 5 times in succession and the optical drive would make the same accessing noise each time, on cue

IMac Won't Start Unless Unplugged For Long Period

Jun 17, 2012

I discovered my iMac shut down and to start. I feared it had been fried in an electrical storm the day before, though the whole house is surge protected, and a printer on the same plug was unaffected. I tried unplugging briefly, still no luck. I tried hitting the start button ( on the iMac itself, not the keyboard) a few times over a couple of days with no luck, and unplugged it in prepartion to cart off to a repair shop, fearing the worst. A couple of days later, I plugged it in for one last try before taking it to the car and, bingo, it started! Everything was fine, everything in its place.

A couple of weeks later, I once again notice the computer is turned off and will not restart. I uplug and replug - no luck. I unplug, let it sit, and try it again about 24 hours later.

IMac :: Install The New Chips, The Mac Won't Start. Period. No Beeps, No Nothing?

Jul 2, 2008

I recently got an 20' 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Imac. It came with 1 gig of Ram. I purchased 2 2Gig SODIMM chips from New Egg. The ram specs matches what the little manual says. ddr2, pc2-5300 667MHz. When I install the new chips, the mac won't start. Period. No beeps, no nothing. I can sort of hear it try to start, then quits.

When I put back the original ram chip. Works again. When I have the original ram chip AND 1 of the new chips (for a total of 3 gigs of RAM) it works.Swapped one new chip with the other (as long as the original is in) Works.Original Chip is on the right side, New is on the left. Swapped places. Works. The mac will start ONLY if the original is in place. I should be able to start it with the nes ones in but it won't. I know both works because I swapped them.Anybody have any ideas on what's going on? Is there a setting somewhere I need to change or something?

Mac Pro :: Mac Pro (early 2008) Won't Turn On When Turned Off For A Long Period Of Time?

Aug 5, 2008

I have been having problems with my Mac Pro for the last few days. When I am not encoding or downloading anything for the night, I usually turn it off. Recently though, if I turn it off, and then turn it on the next evening (around 16 hours later) then it will not turn on right away, and by that I mean that the fans turn on, I see the little white light turn on, but I don't hear the startup chime, the lights don't turn on on my logitech keyboard, and my screen stays black, the monitor itself not detecting any signal.

It may take up to 20 minutes of pressing the power button and turning it on and off until I hear the startup chime and see the apple on screen, but then it usually resets itself once and then it loads up to mac os. Once the Mac Pro has been turned on once though, I can turn it on and off without any problems it seems.

I just don't understand why this would be happening. One thing I thought was that we had an electrical outage a few days ago but all my other computers were fine and I am using a special bar to connect my stuff to make sure that when there is an electrical outage, no damage is done to my computers. The weird part is that the problems started appearing on the next day so I was wondering if that could have affected my computer and how.

MacBook Pro :: Screen Flicker In Full Screen Games / Game Becomes Unplayable

Jan 2, 2011

I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro 15" with a mini displayport, and I decided I would share my LCD monitor with my windows box. The desktop box is connected with DVI and I have connected my Macbook through an HDMI adaptor from Moshi. Everything works very well, and I'm pleased with the quality of the output, but I'm having trouble with a screen flicker in full screen games.

When I select full 1080p (1900x1080) in any full screen game, the screen "shudders." It does not occur on the OS X desktop, and I can only explain it as a shudder. Lines and text shift perceptively left and right, and the game is unplayable. I have experienced this problem in Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and Half Life: Episode 2 so far.

Could the problem be with my monitor and the way it handles an HDMI signal? The Macbook is flawless otherwise, with no other issues of any kind. The "shudder" only occurs during full screen games set to 1900x1080. Lower resolutions are not effected and work fine...

I'm stumped.

Edit: I should add that I have no other 1080p capable devices to test the output with.
