I've noticed that when my rMBP (late 2013, Mavericks) turns off the display automatically while on battery (as configured via Energy Saver) and I try to wake it immediately, I get a black screen with the cursor, rather than my password/unlock screen. It remains a black screen, with the cursor moveable, for 5-10 seconds or so, and then the password/unlock screen will appear as usual.Â
This does not happen if:I don't try to wake the display/computer immediately after automatic display sleep (e.g., I wait 5-10 seconds and it's fine)I turn off the display using a hot corner and immediately wake the displayI put the computer to sleep by closing the lid and immediately wake it by opening the lidI select Sleep from the System/Apple menu and immediately wake it by pressing a key or clicking on the trackpadÂ
Why automatic display sleep is causing this temporary black screen? I currently get around it by setting the time for automatic display sleep while on battery to 10 minutes instead of the default 3 minutes to minimize the chances of needing to immediately wake the screen. I'd like to keep it at 3 minutes if possible to maximize energy savings, but the temporary black screen is really annoying if I didn't really want display sleep and consequently have to wake immediately.
my screen goes black almost immediately after waking up every time, I have to use the power button to revive it, then it goes dark again within a minute or so. Any advice, should I try using a second monitor to work around it?

My MacBook Pro would not boot this morning. Did a safe start and then everything worked except Safari. It quits immediately with a screen filled with letters and numbers. If you click on the Reopen it does the same thing. Tried the utilities / Disk Utility / Repair Disk permissions ... still doesn't work.

I imported a song from iTunes and I want to cut out the singing and just have the song be instrumental. Is there any way I can do this on Garageband?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to the forum and am new to Macs in general. My first Mac (a 350Mhz B&W G3) I bought 2 years ago and only used it a handful of times. I'm mostly a PC user. But anyhow here is the issue. I recently bought a G4 Mac Mini (1.25Ghz,512Mb,40Gb) off the bay knowing it had an issue with the USB ports. So I researched as much as possible about the problem prior to making the purchase. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy and figured it would be fun. But this has got me at my wits end. It has OS X Tiger on it and when you start it up it starts the "Welcome" in a billion languages movie, then it shows the the "Tiger getting started screen".
After that it immediately pops up with a white screen of a keyboard that says one is not connected. My keyboard for this is an Apple wired aluminum one with white keys (just bought it about 4 months ago and can confirm it WORKS). My spare keyboard is an Apple B&W G3 keyboard and also can confirm it WORKS. I have two spare mice that I use for these kind of projects. One is a wireless Logitech "Cordless Optical Mouse for Notebooks" and the other is a Microsoft wired "notebook optical mouse 3000" model 1049. So, yes I switched them around on USB ports, nothing. I tried the PMU reset about 10 times, nothing. I replaced the CR2032 battery with a fresh one, nothing. So, I got curious....I have a USB LED light meant to clip on the screen of a notebook to illuminate the keyboard. I plugged it in and guess what it works! I also have a Thermaltake USB 80mm fan sitting on my desk as a fan to cool me off, it has a rheostat on it to adjust intensity. I plugged it in and tunred it all the way up and it worked just as good as it does on my HP desktop.
So it seems it isn't a lack of power from these USB ports, it seems that maybe a controller meant to communicate with a mouse/keyboard just went deaf, dumb and blind. Am I right to assume that when you plug in a keyboard or mouse the PC/Mac sends a signal telling the peripheral to "turn on"? Cause it seems it isn't doing that. The LED light and fan don't need confirmation to turn on, they just need power....so they turn on. but my Keyboard and mouse don't do anything. I though it might have been Tiger (possibly?) so I removed the HDD and plugged in a wiped Hitachi 100Gb (2.5") and put in my Mac OS X 10.5 "Retail" disc in to see if it would change it's behavior. With the HDD blank it booted successfully into the Leopard disc and went right into the "choose main language" screen. Nothing, neither my keyboard or mouse worked at all.
Desktop restart shows flickering black/white screen, then black. Could not restart.

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

So I have a DYNEX 21 inch HD TV conected up to my MBP via the VGA connection route. My problem is that when I want a program (or more specifically in this case a game) to go into fullscreen mode it automatically goes to my primary monitor and turns the other screen black. I know I can switch the primary monitor from my actual laptop screen to the TV however I just want the game to be full screen on the TV while still having access to my dock and everything on my laptop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my screen - when there is something black on, I can see a faint mark of a lighter colour. I have tried to take a picture, please excuse the poor quality. There is nothing visible when the screen is off, even under close examination. Is it less visible when lighter things are on the screen, and invisible when the screen is white.
No drops or liquid spills. Will this go away on it's own? Any fixes?
I've had my mac for about three years now and everything was working fine. After I installed lion, I notice that this started to happen. I don't lose any of my information though when it does that. It just goes into a sleep mode I guess? Anyways, is this a feature from the lion update? Something standard?

When my MacBook Pro 13" i5 goes into screen saver mode, which is black, it won't return to normal mode. Tried all keys, trac pad, closing the lip and re-opening it, and it won't respond. The only thing that works is holding down power button for hard shutdown, then restarting it. It has happened 8 times in the last 2 weeks.

Computer starts (keyboard lit, music plays, caps lock light on), but no screen. I need to open and close 2 - 30 times before the screen will turn on. Once on, the computer works perfectly. I've tried PRAM and safemode reset.

View 11 Replies View RelatedMy computer won't start. If I'm holding in the power button, you hear the HD starting the boot. The instant I let go of the button the computer turns off. The longer I hold the button, the longer it attempts this process, until I get to the point where holding the power button would manually shut the computer down. Happens computer plugged in or on battery. Screen never changes from black screen.Â

My Macbook is brand new! (Barely 4 months old) Just recently my laptop will flash a black screen. It starts from the bottom and quickly flashes up the screen higher and higher each flash! i have read on some other pages it is a bad inverter on the inner core of the Macbook. Other than that I do not know what to do!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a new MacBook Air 13" on December 20, 2011. I do like it a lot, but I have one big problem (its big to me!) and question -- about 3 times per week since purchasing the MacBook Air while working / typing on the MacBook Air, the screen just goes black fir NO apparent reason!! It is like the battery is suddenly totally OUT of any power! But, the battery has plenty of charge, and no command or other key stroke nor any other activity that should cause this black screen has been done.

My MacBook pro screen is black, not sure what to do? Computer is about seven years old!

Just yesterday I was using my Macbook Pro - with Word and MSN in use - until it gave me a black screen. (Good thing Word auto-saved.)
The screen wasn't dimmed and the fan (or whatever was running) was still running. So I held down the power button to shut it down. When I turned it on again - and everything was okay - I thought it might have been the battery but yeah, it doesn't explain why the fan was still running.
It's fairly new. I don't play games and I rarely watch anything on it. I'm also very protective of it and don't download much... Which confuses/worries me on why a black screen would appear.
So does anyone want to share some insight on why this happened? Is it some 'normal' thing that eventually happens, because I've been looking around and found information with regards to this black screen problem and the Macbooks of those people seemed fine..
We just get a new mac air. We were trying netflix video, and the browser did not response. Now It get a black screen and can't start.
I tried to press power button, etc, but nothing works.
We are rather new to Mac world. What are the things I could try?
BTW, the Mac air comes with a power supply only. There is no DVD drive or thing like that. How do I re-install OS if I need to?
I have a black macbook that I got in Dec 2007. While I am using it, the screen will randomly going completely black and I have to move towards being closed until the screen works again. I think it is a short in the screen but I am not sure.
I was hoping someone else has had a similar problem and figured out how to fix it. I was also thinking about taking it into Apple or an Apple reseller to get it looked at but I am not sure how expensive it would be.
Last night I was using my computer all fine. However this morning I turn it up, the white light where you push to open the lid, is on without flashing, and there is a black screen.
Please note that I have not installed any new hardware devices i.e. hard drive, ram, etc.
I tried to push the power button for like 10 seconds straight when I turned on to see if that would fix the problem but no. I can hear the hard drive starting up when I push the power button but black screen.
Could this perhaps be one of those faulty 8800 M GT nvidia gfx?
But I'm scared to take it to Apple because earlier this year, I took it apart and redid the thermal pasting and I kind of have screw drive marks on my keyboard aluminum part... It's like so obvious I opened it before. But, my 1 year coverage is already over so hope that doesn't eliminate me from getting that nvidia service in the case that it is the gfx card hardware problem?
For the last few hours my unibody MacBook Pro has been occasionally flickering - the whole or some of the screen goes black for a split second. It's not happening frequently but it's never happened before, just checking to see if this is a "rush to the Apple Store" type situation?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bit of a problem with my Macbook. Once the display goes to sleep, I can't seem to get the screen to come back. The computer doesn't actually turn off, but when I try to get it back with my mouse it goes black. I can usually still slightly see my applications and stuff, and the fan still runs. I end up having to shut it down and then restart it every time. Just wondering if anybody knows how to fix this.
