Mar 4, 2012I have a macbook and been updating the OS via DVDs over the years to 10.6 currently. Recently, the hard drive died and I cannot find the DVD. I cannot load 10.5 on a new drive either.

Nov 16, 2010After 4 years of brave use, the internal HD on my Macbook Pro has died. I'm now looking for a new one to install it myself. It's a first generation Macbook Pro (1.83Ghz - A1150). From a first google search I found this option a pretty decent one: [URL:...] Any feedback on this particular item? Is the site reliable? Also, regarding the installation of the drive itsef: I've seen some guides on how to install it and they seem a little hard to accomplish. My experience with this kind of procedure so far is related to installing ram, which seems to be really easier. Is this something that a non-experienced user can install or shall I think twice before doing such adventures myself?

Jan 4, 2011On Christmas Eve my 6 month old MBP 13" hard drive packed up - got the apple logo and nothing else on boot up. Apple Care phone support couldn't fix so had to send it off for repair (due back this week). I know there are more important things in life, but to have spent a month's wage on a computer and to be let down like this was really disappointing. My last backup was a month ago, so everything since has been lost, and I was without a computer for two weeks. Is this a common fault? What bugged me most was that at no stage did anyone from Apple offer any glimpse of an apology for the floored (and very expensive equipment). I switched from Dell to this and love the computer, and had heard a lot about Apple's amazing customer service. Not what I've experienced.

Jul 2, 2009I think the hard drive in my Macbook (2007 Model) has died. My macbook froze and when I restarted I can hear an usual clicking noise and I only get a white screen with a grey folder icon and white question mark inside. Fortunately, I use super dooper to create a bootable clone of my hard drive as a back up. When I attach this and hold down the apple key I boot straight into the clone and the computer runs fine from the external hard drive. If I go to disk utility my computer can not locate the internal hard drive, nor if I go t sysyem prefs-startup disk. Should I assume its dead or could it be a connection problem. I don't have applecare so I'm willing to buy a new hard drive and swap it myself. However, this is making the assumption the hard drive is the culprit. Can anyone else diagnose this problem from the desrcitpion before I shell out on a new hard drive?

Over a year ago I replaced my stock drive with a WD scorpio black drive 320gb over a year ago. Do I need to swap out my WD for the original HD? I have a recent time machine back up of my data, but I'm more concerned about someone denying warranty service because I swapped out my drive. What have you guys been doing when bringing your machine in for service? Does it matter that my original drive has not been updated for over a year?

Jul 30, 2010I have an original 24" aluminum 2.4GHz and it has been acting very strangely lately, and would not boot yesterday. Luckily I had a clone and booted from that, and on bootup I got the message that the internal disk could not be repaired and to backup and format the disk as soon as possible. However, trying to partition the disk gave "could not unmount"; does "erase disk" do a format?. All of the data appears to be on the disk and accessible, but read only, so it makes me wonder if the hard disk is really bad or if this is some other error. I am going today to buy another external disk so that I can have a clone of my clone (now boot) disk just in case. If the internal disk is bad then it is probably easier just to use an external and forget about the internal; I looked at the teardowns on ifixit and it looks like a very time consuming (but not necessarily difficult) process to replace the disk.

Jun 19, 2014I was recently anxious to buy a game from the Mac App Store, being 40 gigabytes in size. The only problem is my free space. Having a 128 GB SSD, I have 36 gigabytes not in use. If I was to download the app, and get the grayed-out icon appeared in Finder, could I simply drag that icon to my hard drive and let the download continue there, or would that potentially corrupt files/break the download?Â

OS X :: Snow Leopard: External Hard Drive Won't Eject When Downloading?
Sep 4, 2009This is a major issue for me, as I feel like I'm going to end up damaging my hard drive.
I am downloading a legal torrent to my external hard drive, however when I quit Transmission and try to eject my external drive, nothing happens. Snow Leopard doesn't even say it is in use like it is meant to. It just does nothing to eject the drive.
So I end up having to yank the USB plug out.
What gives? It ejects normally as long as I don't download to it.
MacBook Pro Running Lion / Battery Died Now Will Not Boot
May 8, 2012I have a Lion-native early 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro aluminum unibody running 10.7.3.I was using it an hour and a half ago.I closed the lid, and when I came back to it an hour later, the battery had died.Plugging in to a charger did not wake it.I force shut it down by holding command+option+control+shift and the power button.Now, when I turn it on, I see the white screen for a half second, then it fades to black.The indicator light stays on and solid (not pulsating).I have tried:
- Resetting the PMU
- Resetting the PRAM (white screen for half second, then fades to black, each time)
- Booting to Single User (white, then fades to black)
- Booting to Recovery Mode (white, then fades to black)
I have tried to provide all the pertinent details as well as what I have tried.Please let me know if you need more information.

IMac :: Optical Drive Died - Can I Boot From USB
Jun 9, 2009I have the first gen aluminum iMac and I think my optical drive is pretty much dead. It makes this horrible scratching noise whenever I put a disc in and it'll try to read for half a minute before spitting it back out. Sometimes it even freezes the computer. Anyway, I'm just planning on getting an external USB DVD burner. Does anyone know if I can boot off the USB DVD drive?

Jun 8, 2012I want to potentially upgrade my hard drive from the measly 160GB to something with more space, more current, and hopefully faster. I've been doing my homework, and the only thing that scares me is the OS. I don't want to clone my harddrive as I would love to start new. I have back ups, so anything important can be transferred, but I would really like a clean slate. That would mean installing the OS from scratch. Can I use the boot disc I made with the Lion installer to install Lion on the new drive directly? I bought my MacBook Pro with Leopard installed, and later that summer installed Snow Leopard, then last summer upgraded to Lion. I don't have the Snow Leopard discs anymore, but I wouldn't want to install each after the other.How do I go about installing that? If I have a brand new drive, there theoretically won't be anything on it, so when I get that in and turn on the computer, what will happen? Will it tell me to do something?

- Freecom ToughDrive Pro USB hard drive
- New MBP running Lion 10.7.3Â
When I plug the disk in an USB port in the MBP, the light that indicates operation starts blinking but very lighltly colored and the disk is not recognized by the computer. I have put data on it using iMac Snow Leopard. I have plugged the disk into a MBP running Snow Leopard and it works. I have also tried another Lion (older MBP) and it also works.Â
How come the disk is not mounted or shown in Disk Utility. Can it be a power issue?
I have noticed there a lot of similar posts in the forum and none has been satisfactorily solved. Is this a mayor Lion bug? If yes, how can I downgrade to Snow Leopard?

I haven't had any other problems except that before I downloaded the Lion my Mac would recognize my external hard drive (WD passport). And now it doesn't, I even go to the finder and it doesn't even show up under "computer" to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my external hard drive I plugged it into another mac that doesn't have Lion and it would work. My external drive has everything 1TG of everything.

Aug 20, 2014I have a Hitachi Touro USB 3.0 1TB external hard drive that has always worked on my Macbook. Formatted in FAT so it would work on both my PC and Mac. I can't remember exactly when it stopped working, but I think I had to reset my mac once as it stopped responding and the HDD was plugged in. After that it stopped showing up in Finder, but still appears in Disk Utility. It also shows up in Storage under "About This Mac". Â I've tried resetting my computer, ran Apple Hardware Test, and have tested the hard drive on other computers and it works fine. Just doesn't show up in Finder on my mac!!
