MacBook :: Replaced HD Now BootCamp Not Showing As Startup Disk Option
Jul 4, 2012
I have a 13 inch aluminum late 2008 MacBook. The processor is 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running OS X Lion 10.7.4. I am in the process of replacing my old hard drive with a new one.
My old hard drive is partitioned as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Size: 132.5 GB
Name: BootCamp
Format: Windows NT File System (NTFS)
Size: 26.69 GB
When I was partitioning the new drive I did so as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Size: 973.51 GB
Name: BootCamp
Format: MS-DOS (FAT) --- This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work. I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from. I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BootCamp on there at all. However, I do HAVE to have that program. Size: 26.34 GB (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.)
I connected the new Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives. It went through fine. (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.) This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well. I then started the process with the BootCamp drives.
However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BootCamp drive. So I used Winclone and it seemed to work fine. I then replaced the old drive with the new one. Then I rebooted the machine. Everything seems to be fine except when I went to restart it in Windows using BootCamp that was not an option. The only start up disks listed are the Macintosh HD.

I've finally installed win7 on a secondary internal hd in my mac pro. When starting up and holding down ALT i can indeed select between the two os's. However in mac the "Startup Disks" system pref's doesn't show win7. I would like to be able to restart from the system pref's instead of holding down alt but i can't if it's not viewable in the Startup Disks Pref Pane...
The restartup using bootcamp procedure takes longer then it should on my machine, a mac pro with two ssd's. Sometimes it gets hung up on the grey screen for thirty seconds or so. How can I get Startup Disks to see my Win7 hd? How can I get the grey screen part of the bootcamp startup process not take so long?

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.

When I try turning the computer on, I get the option to choose the startup disk, but only Recovery is visible. When i check in Recovery, it still shows my original start up disk, but I cannot restart off that. What do I do?

I ran omnidisk sweeper and it shows I only have 39GB of used space. However, when I check the info on the startup disk it shows that I only have 300mb-5GB left depending on the day. I have deleted all unnecessary files that I can. I can't really find anything else to delete. I only have a couple programs installed that are pretty basic like word and excel.

I'm working on a Macbook pro 15 A1278 for a friend. They were given the computer by someone who didn't want it. My friend did not have the password to get into the machine and no original system disc. I thought this was going to be an easy case of erase-and-install. So I attempted to boot from my own Snow Leopard DVD, then I started getting three beep errors. Now I can't get as far as the password screen any more. Computer starts with normal chimes, then when it gets to the grey screen with the Apple, I get the "three beeps". Bought new ram, put it in, reseated it a bunch of times, still three beeps every time.Attempting to restart using the system DVD by holding the C key, same problem. DVD spins up but then three beeps. Fired the machine up as a target disk and ran disk utility via remote control from another machine, we''ll call that one "machine B". Hard drive checks out with no errors and is formatted in Extended Journaled. Did a clean system install from machine B (while still in target disk mode). System install was a success and was able to restart machine B successfully from the hard drive of the faulty machine.Â

I'm retrying to install windows on my mac. It's the second time I'm trying, but it has somehow become way harder. The first time I installed Windows, everything worked perfectly, untill I noticed that SP2 wasn't installed, and I couldn't install it on my windows, somehow.
Now I'm trying it with a different version of XP (Pro), but Bootcamp is giving issues. I haven't deleted the old volume/partition (don't know the difference) of windows yet, as it is installed on my startup disk and Disk Utility won't delete it .

I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.

Two weeks ago, my SSD had been broken due to the "Invalid node structure" error. I cannot fix it by using `fdisk_hfs`. Then I have to format and re-install, but got another error: "Install Failed: OS X could not be installed on your computer. OS X can't be installed on the disk because a recovery system can't be created. Visit [URL] .... to learn more"Â
Visit that article, then resize the partition and try again but nothing changes.Â
There is no other way, I have to bring it to the warranty service. They said they replaced my SSD with a new one. But now my Mac boot quite slow:- 10s from console to Apple logo- 30s from Apple logo to login windowÂ
It used to boot in ~ 11, 12s, the login window seems appear immediately after Apple logo.
Here're my EtreCheck report:Â

So, I have some questions:Â
1. Is there any way to make sure that my SSD has been replaced?Â
2. I would like to know what does it actually do from Apple logo to login window?

I have a early 09 iMac 2.93Ghz with 6GB of ram. About a month ago it kept freezing at the grey startup screen. I took it to Apple and two trips to Apple later my hard drive was replaced. One month later here I am and the problem is happening again, the same exact problem. I turn on the iMac it goes to the grey screen, the beach ball "like" thing starts spinning and then it freezes in the middle of it and I have to do a hard power off(hold down the power button). Any ideas!? I already scheduled a appointment with Apple tomorrow afternoon but its a royal pain in the a** to keep shuffling my iMac between home and the Apple store. This will be my 4th trip in for the same problem, btw.

i just bought an early 2010 Macbook running OsX 10.6.8, all updates have been done. I cant seem to start file sharing, in the preferences window>sharing the window stays blanc. Also i noticed that the icon of sharing looks the same as the general preferences icon, normally this is a folder with a yellow mark on it.

I cannot start up my Mac Pro 2008 without holding down the Option key.My Snow Leopard internal hard drive failed, so I replaced my failed internal drive with a brand new one and put the cloned backup onto it. I also have other internal drives and partitions with systems 10.5.6, 10.7.5, and 10.8.4. I briefly added a Mavericks partition, but removed it.Â
I THINK the problems started after the HD failure, but I'm not sure. I added no peripherals recently, although I did add 4 gigs of RAM which were faulty and I had to replace them. But they test fine with a memory test. If I Restart, the Mac comes up with a grey screen and won't boot into any system.
If I Shut down, then Start up, I get the gray screen. In System Preferences, I can see every single possible Startup Drive, but no matter which one I select, the same gray screen happens on boot up. However, if I hold down the Option key (from startup or restart), then I can choose any startup volume and it starts just fine.Â
I've run Disk Utility many times for Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on every volume. I've run Disk Warrior. I've zapped the SMC/PRAM, etc. I've tried starting up from external firewire drives and USB drives. No matter which drive I select in StartUp Disk Preferences, it's the same grey screen. I've tried starting up with ZERO peripherals attached except for USB keyboard and mouse. I've taken out all startup and login items. I don't mind using the Option key every time, but I'm worried it's a sign of impending problems.Â

I had an image from an older macbook (10.5.4) and I put it in a newer MacBook which I assume was could not boot as far back as 10.5.4, so I updated it by booting 10.5.6 on an external and running the combo 10.5.7 update on the MacBook's internal drive. I boot and after staying on a blue screen for a while, it goes black and shows me a command prompt and I can see all the processes starting up. then it goes back to blue and works normally. On shutdown, I see the prompt again. I cannot boot into safe mode or single user mode for some reason. When holding down the s and shift it still does the same thing. I can however still use option to boot from a different drive.
The computer runs perfectly normally once booted. I just don't want to see the command line stuff. So is there some way to stop it, or hide it?

However after researching how to do this i used the alt/option key when opening iphoto in order to create a new library, once i did this i directed the new library to my external hard drive. Now when i open iphoto there are no images and if i open my external hard drive to the new library it just opens iphoto and no images show up! What do i do? is there any way i can reverse the process?? Why is there nothing in my new eh library?

I recently installed snow leopard to a new hard drive. Before I formatted the hard drive with leopard on it, there was duplicate everything when I right clicked and used open with, but after I formatted the old drive, most of them disappeared... except for one. Right now, I'm seeing two VLC players and I don't know why. I tried opening a file with each of them and they both point to the same VLC so I was wondering how I can remove the duplicate.

I just bought an IMac 21.5" - 'Mid 2011' - Lion. It's wireless. I'd like to start up the computer using an external HD. I know that I should hit the option key to present the choices. This does not work from rebooting, it only functions when I turn off the machine, wait 20 seconds & hit the 'turn on' button again. Also, I've noticed that if I go into the Apple Help menu & type 'Pram' nothing comes up. In an older MBP, also using Lion, I get a list of choices. I would also like to know if this normal behavior?Â

Well, I'm a new owner of a MacBook Pro 13" and the Hard Drive is only 160GB I believe which is plenty of space for what I use it for but I would much rather have my Music/Movies/Pictures and all media separate from that space. I was just thinking of getting a portable External Hard Drive for all of my media but then I could also upgrade my 160GB drive to let's say a 500GB Drive and do away without an External drive. What would you do? Upgrade your existing internal HD or get an External HD?
The MacBook Pro usually just stays on the desk anyways so an External HD wouldn't be any inconvenience to me but if I wanted to just unplug it and go will that harm anything? Also, there is plenty of External Hard Drives available right now and I was wondering if any were better than others? I just want something basic, portable, and works with a mac. No firewire needed, USB is fine with me. I was really looking at the My Passport from WD and was wondering if the non Mac Ready versions work with a Mac anyways? [URL]

I forgot to switch on the power socket at the wall so when I came back it had powered off. When I switched it back on it showed the last screen visible before sleep mode kicked in and then showed the apple logo with a progress bar underneath. The progress bar starts to move slowly but after about a minute starts again. It slowly starts to move again but stops after about two minutes and the macbook powers off.

So I bought a "new" PowerMac G4. I have two already.
The guy said it was running os 9 but now it wouldn't boot. I figured it needed an OS and the guy was wrong. I try to boot it up...
flashing ? folder
So I go thru all hell trying to install os x and what not.
It won't boot to the install CD. I finally got it to boot from my other Powermac's HD with OS X on it, but I can't seem to install OS X on this other HD, but that's not really what I'm asking here...
When I startup the PM and hold Option, nothing happens with either HD installed!!! No boot menu comes up.
Also when I hold down C, nothing happens at least nothing different. It doesn't boot to the CD.
Why is this?
Sometimes it seems to boot to my HD OS X and sometimes it boots to the CD on it's own. I can't choose what I want it to boot to unless I start the OS X and select it from there.

I believe the Macs at my college allow the user to select from either Mac OSX or Windows at startup. However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.
