MacBook Pro :: What To Do With Old RAM If Buying 8Gb Aftermarket
Jul 14, 2009
I'm assuming that a MBP purchased with 4Gb will have 2x2. If I wanted 8Gb, I assume the only option would be to buy 8Gb (4x4) and replace the 2x2. Is there a market for the 2x2 I would be removing from the MBP? What do most people do with this RAM that they replace?
I'm planning to get a 17" MBP whenever they update. I've been toying with the idea of getting an SSD as well to reduce IO contention with some applications. Would I be better served getting the Apple SSD option for whatever ludicrous amount of money they want, or would it make more sense to get one from NewEgg and install it myself? I'm curious about this not so much from a technical standpoint (I'm comfortable doing my own hardware swap), but rather from a "what kind of grief am I likely to get about voiding AppleCare if I have to have the new machine serviced down the road?
Will be using my new 500GB 5400 rpm as an external and wanted feedback on the best aftermarket 7200rpm drive. Price / Speed / Battery Impact. I would appreciate some info from all you techies.
I recently downgraded from a 128GB SSD model to a 120GB HDD Rev Air. However, I learned after the fact that there are in fact NO aftermarket hard drives of any sort for the Air because of it's SATA - LIF connector. Given the fragility of the 1.8 inch HDD, this pretty much means we're all going to have a very nice lookin' paperweight after the warranty runs out. Does anyone know if ANY company is going to release an aftermarket SATA - LIF HD? It seems unlikely since the Rev B air is the only notebook that uses it... if that's the case I'll probably end up selling this computer despite how much I like it
I am considering a purchase of a 17" unit. I will probably buy a base unit and then upgrade the memory and possibly the HDD myself (this is largely driven by procurement transaction limits). Is there experience here in adding a SSD to the 17in? I could manage with 256Gb, but have 500Gb drives reached the market yet?
I love my year old MBP. However on campus I've noticed that when using it in class and outside or in a restaurant, the glare is awful. I wish I had gotten the AG screen, but I do not want to sell mine and buy another. What is the best screen shield that I can put on my notebook?
So the temp of my hard drive has been 34 degree F for since I put in my SSD. I was searching and found this [URL] Does the MBP have something along these lines that need to be reconnected or is the temp sensor actually built into the hard drive and not used on an SSD because it can run hotter?
I am going to be getting a iMac, but am struggling with the decision on getting the ssd option. Who here is going to be modding it and adding their own? Is the new one supposed to be harder to mod then the last model?
I am going to buy a second hand MacBook pro and I need to know how to check it and what I should actually check. This is my first time with a Mac and I have no idea how to check it and what are the system information software which allows me to check the specs and probable problems in the system.
I've decided to go with an SSD refurb and am torn between the 1.6 and 1.8 SSD model. The 1.8 is an extra $100, but it's $100 which may be over my budget and I'm not sure if I'll really notice a difference. The reason I want the 1.8 is because I'm coming from a 2.0 MB and 1.8 doesn't seem as bad as downgrading to a 1.6.
I've never purchased AppleCare before, but I notice its alot cheaper from places like ebay and such. My only problem is, how do I know if they're legit? How is the registering process for AppleCare work? Is there anything special I should look for when searching places like ebay? EDIT: Sorry, I'm purchasing it for my MBP, thats why I posted here, sorry if its in the wrong forum.
I want to buy an apple wireless keyboard but i want it in SPANISH with the letter " ñ" and when i enter in the apple store online, i see that you can select your language and if i set russian or japanesse, the keyboard in the display turns into that language, but when i pick SPANISH the image displaying is exactly the same as the English one, without the letter " ñ" and this is a must have letter of our alphabet so i want to know if i order that keyboard will come with that letter and thats just an error of the apple store or will it came the same as the English one?
I just bought a second hand MacBook 2010 for my girlfriend. It came with a clean Lion installed. What is making me paranoid is that I use tracking software Prey on my own MBP and now how can I be sure that the new one hasn't got tracking software installed for opposite reason (to steal it and sell again)?I know it might sound stupid, but I like to be prepared for the worst. So should I format the drive and install Lion again? What would you do?
I want to buy a cord that will hook up from my Laptop (Macbook Pro) to my TV. I've already checked and my TV does have a HDMI port.Im just not sure where I can buy a HDMI cable or which one.
I don't have the disk that came with my laptop. If I can find an ISO image of 10.6.3 can I use that to reinstall the OS or it has to be the disk that came with it? I plan to go to genius bar and see maybe they can just install the OS that came with the laptop and I can buy a Lion upgrade from App Store.
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.4)
i am thinking about buying the new macbook pro. I currently have the older version approx 2 years old.I have purchased aperture, photoshop and ilfe. would all of these programs be put onto the new laptop without having to re-purchase?
i am having a hard time trying to buy apps from uk app store with my hk credit card?i tried to sign up another apple account which i put as a hk apple ID but the same issue still came up?
If I buy a MBP online (say Macmall) and it shows up with a problem (dead pixel, etc.) can I take it to an Apple store for repair/replacement? Or do I have to return it to where I bought it?
Does anyone think the Mac Pro will get any changes at WWDC?
I am in the market for a new Mac Pro. I have settled that I do not need 8-core power. I found a good deal on eBay and not sure if its a good idea to buy one off of eBay when WWDC is less than 2 weeks away. Anyone feel there will be a speed bump, case redesign, snow leopard?
If snow leopard came out, does anyone know if Apple includes free upgrade for new systems from a certain date?
Any advice on whether buying a Mac Pro on ebay is a bad idea? Does Apple take PayPal receipt for eBay purchase as a valid proof of purchase? I've never had to provide a receipt for my Macbook Pro even though I did buy it at a true reseller.
I`m thinking of a completly separate computer just for "work". I have never owned any kind of apple computer, but I work on them in school. What I could afford is a used G5 with 1.8-2.0 dual processor. I would need this computer for the adobe graphic suite CS4. Will it do? How is upgrading, HDD, graphic card, RAM? Do you need to buy special products for apple?
I'm buying a Mac pro and logic 8 soon and I had some questions:
1) I only need 4 cores at this moment, so should I get a refurbished (2x Dual core) mac pro so for a later upgrade I have the two heatsinks to upgrade one or both CPUs?
2) Would any xeox 771 cpu work on the mac pros, could I pair a 65nm and a 45nm?
3) The difference between the ram speed of the current and older generation of mac pros (DDR2-800 vs DDR2-667) makes any "real" difference in the overall speed?
4) Does the mac pro have any technology of reducing Hard drive noise/vibration? (ie rubber suspension) I'll be using all 4 HDs and low noise is very important.
I'm thinking of buy a refurb 27" i7 but I'm worried about what the deal is with returns. What If I get one that has a huge scratch on the back or something, can I still return it seeing as they do say there might be some cosmetic damage?
Or if the yellow screen issue is still in play, can I return a refurb with no problems?
Also, how do return work? I live nearly 80miles from the nearest Apple store, so would I send it to Apple or would they pick it up?
I have £30 left in my app store account ( which was from a gift card) and want to buy an app for £35. Will this amount be taken as a whole (£35) from a card...Or only the £5 remaining?
I live in the US but im in vacation in Mexico and I want to buy music and i've seen Mexican iTunes cards at gas stations could I use those? if yes then how? or can I have a friend send me and iTunes code from America and redeem it and use it here?
I'm new to mac and I don't really know much about computers. I was buying some stuff online and when I click view my cart I get an error message saying:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorMy DocumentsSitesstore.donatelife.netxshoplibrariesFileMakerImplementationFileMakerImpl.php on line 348.
I have an iMac, Mac OS X version 10.6.2. It was the online store for Donate Life America http://store.donatelife.net/ and I was using safari. I also tried Firefox and got the same message.
