MacBook Pro :: Worth Buying 13" 2010 Or MB 2010 Better?
Apr 15, 2010I've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?

Jun 25, 2012I deleted the startup commands from the LaunchDaemon folder, restarted. Went back, FOLDER IS GONE!Downloaded Clamxav. It crashed. I deleted it. It had 400 plus items to remove! Console now says timers set, loops closed, target class NSA applications? Dropbox is being affected, HERE's WHAT'S COMING UP.

I am in the market for a new Mac Pro. I have settled that I do not need 8-core power. I found a good deal on eBay and not sure if its a good idea to buy one off of eBay when WWDC is less than 2 weeks away. Anyone feel there will be a speed bump, case redesign, snow leopard?

Any advice on whether buying a Mac Pro on ebay is a bad idea? Does Apple take PayPal receipt for eBay purchase as a valid proof of purchase? I've never had to provide a receipt for my Macbook Pro even though I did buy it at a true reseller.

Apr 28, 2009I'm back to using a mac after 4-5 long years (I had to use a PC after selling my old ruby G3 iMac, long story) and I must say I'm VERY VERY happy that I've finally got a MacBook (the computer I've wanted for a long time).I got the white MacBook with the nvidia chipset. It came with 2GB of DDR2 667mhz and a 120GB 5400rpm HDD. I'm not a pro-user, I'm a med student so I'll use basically office, ilife, internet, mail and maybe a few games. My question is if I'll see noticeable improvements in these tasks if I upgrade de RAM to 800mhz (the nvidia whitebook supports it) and the harddrive to 7200rpm. Is it worth the extra money? How long will this kind of memory and HDD stay in the market?

Oct 29, 2009I am considering replacing my 1st Gen Mac Pro with a new iMac quad core 7i and I would like to get an idea of how much my Mac Pro is worth before I consider selling it. Places like Gazelle say its worth over $1500 but I find that hard to believe. I believe its the 2.2GH or 2.26 GH but I have upped the Ram to 12GB and I have 2 x 250GB drives and 2x320GB drives in there, also added Blue-tooth and I have all original boxes,cables, etc. I even have a newer Wireless keyboard and mouse that I will send along with it. It has Leopard and iLife 09/iWork 09. And the stock 256K nVidia Video.

1) I only need 4 cores at this moment, so should I get a refurbished (2x Dual core) mac pro so for a later upgrade I have the two heatsinks to upgrade one or both CPUs?
2) Would any xeox 771 cpu work on the mac pros, could I pair a 65nm and a 45nm?
3) The difference between the ram speed of the current and older generation of mac pros (DDR2-800 vs DDR2-667) makes any "real" difference in the overall speed?
4) Does the mac pro have any technology of reducing Hard drive noise/vibration? (ie rubber suspension) I'll be using all 4 HDs and low noise is very important.

Apr 6, 2009I've decided to go with an SSD refurb and am torn between the 1.6 and 1.8 SSD model. The 1.8 is an extra $100, but it's $100 which may be over my budget and I'm not sure if I'll really notice a difference. The reason I want the 1.8 is because I'm coming from a 2.0 MB and 1.8 doesn't seem as bad as downgrading to a 1.6.

Sep 7, 2008My G4 ibook (1ghz, 1.25GB RAM) has had it's second HD go on it, admittedly it is a 5 year machine now. However, I do like its form factor, and find that for typing notes in class it is ideal as on the lowest brightness and wifi off, I can get close to 6 hours of battery life out of a charge.
At this point I am considering simply going for a new Macbook, however they are a little larger, or perhaps a netbook of sorts, the new dell looks interesting and potentially trying to get OS X on it.
However, before I do so, I wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with a SSD in the ibook, was it worth it? Where did you get the SDD (particularly useful if they ship to canada).

Have the original MBP but realized I never use the 'pro' features and instead get irritated by the heat.My plans for use are:- Surfing, email- Some limited web design- WMWare to run some job stuff that doesn't exist on Mac but non graphic intensive, although Vista OS will be the basis.- Some older non too hot games, AoE, Spaceward Ho.- Watch some reruns of CSI on cbs.com- lots of smaller utilities to check web cams etc.

Mar 4, 2009The price hikes for the new Mac Pros are much than probably most of us anticipated. So looking at perhaps getting an old stock Harpertown octo 2.8Ghz or 3.2GHz machine.
1. are they still worth getting?
2. will they still be upgradeable for the next 2/3 yrs.
3. is there any limitations, end of road technologies with these machines.
4. is better to just get a baseline Quad-core 1 x 2.66Ghz machine. (although the 8GB RAM limitation feels like a weak proposition, and surely a 2.8GHz harpertown octo is faster than a single quad 2.66? I know about the new motherboard layout, but seems like a lesser spec machine).
