MacBook Pro :: Plugged Up A Different HDD To The Right Side / Ejecting And Reconnecting From Time To Time?

Jul 6, 2009

After a few months of confusion, I think one of my USB ports is dying. I had been plugging a My Passport HDD into my left USB port and a fan/hub (plus other things into the hub) into the right USB port. I had been having problems using Time Machine even with a HDD attached to my computer, so I figured the HDD was bad. I bought a new one (Seagate 1.5TB at $120) and planned on using another 500GB drive I have for Time Machine.

At the same time, I had been plugging my new iPhone 3GS into either ports on a hub on that right port chain or directly into it. The phone would eject and reconnect a lot when doing that. When I tried it on the left USB port or even connected to that hub coming off the left port, no problems. I plugged up a different HDD to the right side. It also began ejecting and reconnecting from time to time.I think my USB port is going bad, but I'm not sure because I have never had one that worked well and then stopped on a factory-built system. The only other time I had problems was when I bought a big, fancy PC case with about 800 ports and one or two out of 500 on the front wouldn't work. This is a much bigger problem on a MacBook Pro. If this port does sound bad, would it be worth investing in an ExpressCard USB port card? I have a good 4 or 5 devices that I need plugged in, but I think I can manage using the fan/hub device for most of it.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Find Battery Life Info / Plugged Or Not Plugged

Oct 17, 2009

I use my MBP 15" (the new one), as my primary machine in my office. I sit by my best usually 10-12hrs a day working on it.

I am trying to figure out what is best to do, keep the AC plugged in or have it un-plugged and only plug it in when the battery is drained (or less then 50%)? I have tried different experiments, plugged in, not-plugged and time is about the same for life of the battery. The true question is, how is is best to do it for the health of the battery.

MacBook :: Plugged In Long Past The Fully Charged Time Good For Battery?

Dec 9, 2009

i've had my macbook for a little under a year and i think i may have shortened my battery power. i have a tendency to leave my laptop plugged in long past the fully charged time and allow it to run through the battery till it shuts down. i do this when i accidentally fall asleep listening to music or leave for work and forget it's on or plugged in. how hard on the battery or laptop is it to do this repeatedly? when it's fully charged it tells me i have roughly 4 hours of battery power available. is that the right amount? is there anything i should do to protect the battery? the manufacturer warranty will be up in march, should i take it in for a check up while i may have the option of not having to pay for it?

Hardware :: Will A PC See A USB HDD Plugged Into A Time Capsule

Nov 14, 2009

I want have the system connected though a time capsule to back up both imacs and they are reasonably priced. The project files will be archived to the external usb hard drive and transferred to the imacs for us to work on. there is a second router in the system because it is all ready there and controls the internet coming into the system if the time capsule had more Ethernet port the second router would not be needed. My question is will the computer label julies computer (xp pc with no wifi card) be able to see the external harddrive so she can save the paper work to it so we can all view it?

When I order the 2010 MP next week, I was planning on setting up Time Capsule with it. On the record, I happen to own the latest generation TC, which definitely runs cooler than prior versions.

OS X :: Mpeg Stream Clip - Safe To Use Many Hours At A Time?

Apr 20, 2009

Does anyone know if it's 'safe' for me to run mpeg streamclip converting files for pretty much 8 hours each day continuously.

I only ask because my new mbp 17 fans died within a month and I want to be sure that there's nothing I did to contribute to it.

I have fan control and the mbp runs at 60-ish degrees C with the fans at around 3k.This level of usage is not thrashing it too much is it?

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Backup Slow Even After Restarting In Safe Mode

Jul 1, 2014

I have an extremely slow Time Machine backup. I've gone through the motions and tried to resolve the issue by doing the suggested restart in Safe Mode.I don't use Norton Symantec but I didn't the Norton Remove script through the Console already. I don't run any anti-virus software. This started when I was backing up to at Time Capsule. I backed up to the TC for years before this started. I then moved to backing up (started fresh) to a external HD connected via USB. I have a 2010 Mac Mini with OS X 10.9 (Latest Version)

OS X :: Time Machine With Windows Home Server?

Feb 19, 2009

Ok so I was thinking. I know I can use an external hard drive to back up my mac with time machine. What I am not sure about, and I know it isn't a feature offered in Windows Home Server, but if I am not mistaken I can use my MacBook to access Windows Home Server to share my media right? Since it is through my network and all would I be able to just designate Windows Home Server as the location to store my Time Machine data? Incase it crashes I could just rebuild my MacBook through my network couldn't I?

I noticed this right after I had made a flight on an airplane so I'm assuming something happened while on the flight, even though I had my computer with me the whole time, and inside the case. I tried using compressed air to try and blow out any debris that might have got into the little charger port, but no luck.

I have had my MacBook Pro since May 2007. It has been working fine up until a few months ago. I will have nearly full, or fully battery and the computer will turn off, and will not turn back on unless I plug the charger in. If the charger is unplugged for 5 minutes, the computer completely shuts down. So basically I cannot use the computer unless it is plugged in. It is starting to become a pain because sometimes I need it when I am in a place without an outlet.

Or should I keep unplugged it every night when I close the lid? Also, I do calibrate my battery once a month. its at 93% after 43 cycles.
