Intel Mac :: Damaged Install Disk For Snow Leopard, Restore From Time-machine?

Jun 19, 2012

I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.  It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.(this is why I had the SMART warning). So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.  The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this. As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).

OS X :: Time Machine With Windows Home Server?

Feb 19, 2009

Ok so I was thinking. I know I can use an external hard drive to back up my mac with time machine. What I am not sure about, and I know it isn't a feature offered in Windows Home Server, but if I am not mistaken I can use my MacBook to access Windows Home Server to share my media right? Since it is through my network and all would I be able to just designate Windows Home Server as the location to store my Time Machine data? Incase it crashes I could just rebuild my MacBook through my network couldn't I?

Software :: Won't Work To Stop Time Machine / Can't Work With Exe

Sep 3, 2009

Since I just lost my hard drive on my iMac 24 Intel, I am using external hard drive to backup via Time Machine. My question is what procedures are needed when you disconnect ext. hard drive? Do you change Time Machine from ON to OFF?

I know that I have to eject the ext. hard drive using proper commands, but what happens whenever I reinstall the ext. hard drive? Does Time Machine start over from the beginning or just update for changes since my last backup via Time Machine?

When I go on trips, I store ext hard drive in a safe and this is why I am asking.

OS X :: Time Machine - Brand New Disk And First Time Backup Fails

Dec 6, 2010

So I bought a brand new WD 1TB Elements (USB) to use with Time Machine. I've never used a Time Machine before. I have a MBP13 with a 250GB disk, using the latest Snow Leopard, all updates installed. Formatted the drive to Mac OS Journaled (extended) and set it to use with Time Machine. Works until about 15-17GBs is copied over, than it fails:

1. If I start over it fails very soon after, no matter how many times I retry
2. No matter how many times I reformat it, it always fails
3. I tried one trick I googled - deleting the "inprogress" file - does NOT help
4. SMART status is verified
5. There are no problems if I verify/repair the disk.

OS X :: Time Machine Eating Disk Space / Eat GB's Of Hard Disk Space While Preparing Backup

Dec 11, 2009

whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

Hardware :: Will Time Machine Work With Any NAS

Oct 29, 2010

Does anyone know if Time Machine will work with any NAS? I found this from a 2008 article:

Doesnt Use AirPort Disks If you have a hard drive attached to your AirPort Extreme Base Stationor for that matter, any network-attached storage (NAS) device except the Time CapsuleTime Machine wont recognize it.

Is this still true with Snow Leapord? Specifically I'm considering this drive:

OS X :: How To Setup Time Machine To Work On A NAS

Feb 21, 2008

I've just got my iMac so for me it was important to get TM up and running before I start doing some real work (and hard play!).

I want to share the lessons learned from my experience and from others in this forum in the hope that it will help others.

I am using a NS4300N NAS from Promise on a LAN with an iMac running Leopard 10.5.2. I connect to it using SMB. It should work with any NAS since the instructions here are not NAS specific. I haven't tried with AFP.

OS X :: Time Machine Disk Usage Discrepancy?

Jul 14, 2009

I'm a longtime IT guy but a Mac n00b. My wife just got a 13" MBP and we really like it. I have an external drive that I've been using for Time Machine. When I did the initial time machine setup several weeks ago it said that the computer had around 100GB to back up (lots of photos). It took a while but finally completed. No problems. I looked at the external drive and the amount of disk being used jibed with what I knew it should be using. Fast forward to yesterday. I happened to look at the external drive and instead of 100+GB being used, there was only 14GB on the disk being used. Whoa. I *HAD* stopped a time machine backup earlier in the day because we were doing some things and I didn't want any other processes going on. Could stopping a TM backup (from the TM menu bar menu) cause something like this? I would certainly hope not. It should not have been deleting files at all--we are FAR from using up the entire disk.

I manually started a TM backup last night and it backed up ~ 100GB (I watched it's progress in the menu) and all was well. After it completed I went to the drive via the Finder and verified that disk usage was what I should expect. I just cannot figure out how it went from around 100GB used down to 14GB used and then back up to around 100GB. Frankly, it concerns me quite a bit. Does this make any sense to anyone out there?
