I created an access point from a router. My question is if I can get a faster connection to devices near to the access point with the direct connection or will a direct connection not work with an access point?

I have an ethernet cable. i have an alu macbook. i have an iMac. i need to transfer files between the two. tried connecting the ethernet cables. on the macbook it says "ethernet cable not plugged in"
on the iMac it says "ethernet cable not plugged in".
i know the ethernet cable works because i brought my macbook up to my router and used the ethernet cable to connect to the internet. it is Cat5 or whatever. i've tried everything static IP addresses. restarting. replugging. over and over and over. no luck. the macs just pretend there is no ethernet cable plugged in. tried DHCP. tried manually. but it works when i connect my macbook to my modem.
i've tried everything. i've googled, i've mroogled. nothing works. i spend two hours trying to work this out myself before coming here. every single webpage online just says "oh just turn on file sharing LOL then it works" not for me it doesn't. i've tried that. i've tried it over and over and over again. it doesn't work for me. still won't recognize.
i'd use wireless connection to transfer but that'd take like 20+ hours to send 60GB+ of data. too long (iMac is not at my house) are ethernet cables just fail? this is a BRAND NEW 20 inch imac and a aluminum macbook from 2008.
I have recently had to stop using my wireless router and connect directly from my modem to the WAN port on my computer. However, I can only achieve an internet connection when I direct connect into my PowerBook G4. When I try to connect into my iMac, I get nothing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using a Western Digital 1T hard drive connected to my Time Capsule USB port. It was set up as Allow file sharing with Time Capsule password. I would like to stop using it here and directly connect it to my Macbook Pro (by firewire). When I try to do this, I can see the drive but get a message that I do not have user permissions to access it. I can't seem to figure out a way around this. Is there something that I can change so that I can directly access the disk? Do I need to reformat the WD drive in Disk Utility to be able to use it directly again?

The wireless works when the cable is unplugged but no internet when I plug it in. The ethernet is shown as connected with an IP address etc when I check network preferences.

I succesfully got the NAS to connect directly to the MBP through ethernet but I lost my wireless connection to the router.

I get 45 MB/sec MAX when I connect the 2 macs directly to each other via ethernet cable. What the hell is going on here? is this typical of the AEBS? I would expect these numbers from the 100Mbps AEBS, but not the gigabit version.

I saw people using their Macbook Pro to share the wi-fi through their AirPort. How about Macbook Air? As I don't see such option in the Sharing preference, I downloaded the AirPort Utility and it simply says I cannot install it.

it's a different name each time i save a new pic, however, none of these folders are available in finder, and there's no directory information. Where are these hidden folders hanging out on my mac? How do I get my old pics?

Our wireless router (some standard linksys one) is downstairs. Wireless is mostly used down there so need strongest signal. Then it's plugged into an ethernet point, which goes up to the loft in a box, where it feeds into a 16-port switch, then back out to ethernet points in each room of the house. (recently renovated the house and ran Cat-5e everywhere.)Currently I have to connect via the ethernet point in my room with a network cable as I can't pick up the wireless signal. Which sucks a bit, being tied down when on a macbook pro.Could I just plug an Airport Express into the ethernet point in my room and set it up as a second wireless point, which I can use in my room? Or is that not what it's for?

View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently my dad inherited an iBook G4. The Airport works, but it seems to accept the signal broadcast from only one of the two wireless access points in the house. The two routers are being used to extend the coverage, i.e. iStumbler and Airport Radar show two entries, both with the same ID.
My Macbook is fine; I can move from one end of the house to the other and signal remains high. The iBook's signal gets weaker as it moves from the router on that side of the house. Is this a hardware issue (specifcally, the iBook's Airport), or is there a way to specify which access point to use?
Are there any Mac software, which controls router/access point/gateway/. I hate to use web browser to change router... settings. If there is such software, then I'm planning to buy hardware, which is compatible with it.

I'm trying to set Airport Extreme as a wireless access point, but having some problems with it. My current setup is as follows: Time Capsule as the main router. Connected to my cable modem, and all computers connect wirelessly to Time Capsule. Two Airport Expresses connect wirelessly to Time Capsule. "Join a wireless network" and have selected "Allow Ethernet Clients" I want to have Airport Extreme do the same thing that Airport Expresses are doing, and have it connect wirelessly to Time Capsule. I have some ethernet required devices that need to be in another room. Can this be done? I set Airport Extreme exactly same as Airport Express, but do not see "Allow Ethernet Clients" checkbox.

I've had difficulties partitioning a section of the hd on my pc that will be compatible with mac because the pc will only partition in one format (NTSF I believe).

I'm currently staying in university residence where our internet access is all through wireless access point through the building; in this environment, is it possible to setup a time capsule such that it connects wirelessly to the nearest access point and then allows me to connect to it (the TC) wirelessly or by ethernet (then get an address by DHCP in the TC or the access point)? I was hoping to use the TC as a backup for my imac and macbook, as well as a mounting point for drives I plug into it but thus far haven't been able to come up with anything that works ideally (i.e. tried connecting all my stuff to the access point but the backup worked way too slow over 802.11g to do anything realistically when its shared among many other people).

My setup is as Follows: Netgear WGR614 v7 Router connected to my Cable Modem AE Base station connected wirelessly to the Netgears Network Xbox 360 connected via ethernet to AE. It's not working though. My AE gets an IP automatically from the Netgear fine, but the xbox won't connect. I have my AE on "Join Wireless Network" mode and it's LED is solid green but it still doesn't give the xbox any internet.

My ibook is connected via airport to a linksys access point, and that to the router, which in the connected to the laserjet. I can Ping the router and it all seems fine, but getting it to print just isn't happening.
