I have been setting up a large sharing network with my housemates and have been messing around with sharing permissions quite a bit. I saw a group named wheel and foolishly removed it from somewhere... I think it was the Macintosh HD... the Macbook stopped!Upon researching, I now know what the wheel group is, and that I should have left it the **** alone. At the time though, I thought it was someone in the house with access to my whole drive.I have tried repairing permissions in disc utility, but still get spinning wheel (ironic) upon restart.
DO I need to re-install OSX?
The macbook pro came with snow-leopard and I upgraded to lion, if I re-install from 10.6 disk will I have issues?

Is it safe to start-up a Mac Pro with the side cover removed? (I mean, apart from the obvious not touching any parts while it's running!) Or won't it start at all if it "detects" that the cover has been removed? My Mac is making this weird noise, and I wanted to have a look to see if there are any cables or screws that are not in place.

My Mac does not want to go into Mac OSX 10.5.3
It says various programs did not launch, such as dock, finder, iCal helper, and others. I can only get to the wallpaper, I can't see the menu bar, dock, or icons.
I also don't have a backup
Is there anything I can do?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used to have ccess to "Macintosh HD" and also my own "HOME" folder via right-click menu from Desktop or from anywhere in finder..... I can't remember if it was done using a program or a tweak , tried googling it but nothing came up. I had to reinstall OSX so now looking to regain that functionality/tweak.
Does anyone know how its done?
my "services" menu has disappeared as an option in finder. When I try to access it by right-clicking a finder item (folder or file), it's just plain missing. However if I look for it under the finder menu bar, the arrow beside service says 'building'. But I've been waiting for hours and it doesn't look like anything's happening.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLately the right side of my menu bar (clock, volume, user name) has been freezing up. I can use the rest of my menu bar fine and everything else is okay but when I put my pointer by my clock I get the beachball. The only time I know it is frozen is when I realize its been "3:50pm" for a very long time now. Is there a way to reset it without restarting my computer?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just noticed this happening tonight. I did perform todays Mac Update but I don't know if they are related. Whenever I try to open "Macintosh HD" (my boot drive) the Finder closes. Does anyone know what the solution could be? I was able to run a "verify disk" and it said there were errors so I did a reboot to my Snow Leopard start up disk and was able to repair the errors.
I've googled everything I can think of and can't seem to find anyone else with this issue. I'd rather not have to reimage the machine. Upon further investigation I've noticed that the problem seemed to have started on June 20th. I can access the back-up folders of my Time Machine for "Macintosh HD" for all dates prior but starting on the 20th if I try to access the Macintosh HD backup folder, Finder shuts down just as it does with the current Macintosh HD.
My menu bar on the right side of the screen started flashing after the latest updates from Apple. I haven't changed any settings - just started flashing at various times.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recenty bought a macbook pro used off craigslist. I tried to system restore the computer. ( so i could start off with a fresh empty computer) I used disk utility to clear all the memory on the drives, then i proceded to click on the tab that says "install lion osx". Everything started working, but it required me to type in my apple id to complete the instalation. When i logged in it said that my account doesnt have lion bought on it, and i need to use an account that does. I have no clue on how to get lion operating system onto my account without physically logging into my computer and buying it. But since my computer will only start up into the Mac os x utilities menu im not able to buy it.Â

Issue is Safari is allowing pop ups when searching in google and barnes and noble. I was able to manually delete any files affecting firefox, which appears to be no longer infected.
The items listed below is what a virus scan found and could not be removed or quarantined. Most items could not be found thru finder or the go to folder feature. one item i did find and could not delete manually (notated below). Â

After reinstall of OS X 10.7.4, I restored an older copy from Time Machine backup. I want to completely replace the current "Macintosh HD" folder with the folder that TM put inside it. I created a separate user account, that did not exist before to do it. Do I need to create a root account? Is there an easy way to copy /Macintosh HD/Macintosh HD/ to /Macintosh HD/?

I have a MacBook with 3 partitions. One has Snow Leopard (Macintosh HD), Tiger and Windows 7On Snow Leopard I tried to backup files to my external Hard Drive but some files wouldn't transfer. When I clicked on the folder that was unable to transfer, everything went out of control. All windows started opening themselves and I had to shut down my MacBook by the power button.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:
I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked. How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIt's only today that I noticed my MacBook's right speaker is considerably louder than the one on the left. I opened Sound panel in System Preferences to see if the balance was off, but it was set at dead center. Then, I dragged the balance slider all the way to the left to see if the sound coming from the left speaker was okay at all. Well, it sure isn't. Very muffled, muddy sound. No highs at all. Dragging the slider to the right side reveals a very different sound texture. Very crisp, as it should be. Really weird. Anybody else experiencing this odd speaker behaviour?
I googled for this problem and found this thread, right here on Mac Forums. It's a thread for the MacBook Pros, though. The people with a MacBook Pro think it's because there's a subwoofer on the right side. Well, the MacBook doesn't have a subwoofer, so it can't be that. Any ideas? Is it repair time?
By the way, I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook, the 2,4GHz model.
I have my laptop hooked to my TV so I can watch shows on the internet. The screens were independent until my cat walked on the keyboard and now the two are showing the same screen.  How do I change it back?
