Feb 6, 2009
I used to have ccess to "Macintosh HD" and also my own "HOME" folder via right-click menu from Desktop or from anywhere in finder..... I can't remember if it was done using a program or a tweak , tried googling it but nothing came up. I had to reinstall OSX so now looking to regain that functionality/tweak.
Does anyone know how its done?

I like to have Finder displaying as a list. It's nice. However, when I try to create a new folder, it puts it at the top-most directory displayed. Very irritating. If possible, I'd like to right-click on an already existing folder and create a folder there (instead of creating it at the top-most directory and then moving the darn thing into place, which seems overly complicated for the task that I'm trying to accomplish.) Is there a way to do this? What about left-clicking on a directory and then pressing some other keyboard/button combination and have a new folder created in there?

When going to a linked page in Safari I usually want to open it in a new tab or a new window and occasionally to do other things with it. So I'm used to right-clicking on links to bring up a contextual menu offering me:
Open Link in New Window
Open Link in New Tab
Download Linked File
Download Linked File As...
Add Link to Bookmarks...
Copy Link: I noticed the loss of this menu when my wife wanted me to look at web pages she had found related to a possible holiday. Using Safari in her account on our iMac, I found no menu appeared when I right-clicked on a link. I checked she had the "secondary button" set up OK in the mouse preferences and I also found right-clicking worked OK elsewhere. I then tried other ways of making the menu appear on a link (CTRL-clicking or holding down the left, primary button); neither worked!................

I hate MS Word, but I find that I can't get rid of it just yet. I love Pages, but I need the thesaurus capabilities of word. I need to be able to right click on a word and have synonyms come up in that very menu, no opening dictionary or another pop-up.

Can anyone tell me how to make the applications folder reappear in my home folder without it looking like an alias? My steam install somehow messed it up so I had to delete it, and now I am trying to figure out how to get it back.

Without going into too much detail about the crazy logistics of the two networks that are available here, this is the situation:
Up until last Sunday (it was working fine at about 11:45 Saturday night right before I left), I had always been able to use one particular network jack. I'd just plug in my RJ-45 (Cat 5) cable and power up the MB and be on my way. Well, when I came in on Sunday, the jack is dead. There are other jacks to this network in the building, but the closest one is about 75'-100' away. I'd just buy a longer cable, but I don't think they want me running RJ-45 across the office when I need to use it. Not only that, but the company that supplies that network will be moving out in June, and most likely shutting off all their jacks in the building.
Now, we have the other network here that is obviously still working, but I do not have the credentials to connect to it. When I plug in the network cable, I get the familiar "None of your preferred networks are available" dialogue box.
So my question is this - is there some way that I can tap into one of the existing networks and bypass the company stuff by just connecting to the Internet through the DSL account we have at home? I mean, if you have a network jack that is working, you don't need to have access to that particular network to get out onto the Internet as long as you have a login and password to a network, right?

So I turned on my computers guest account today and while logged onto my username I tried to access the Guest's desktop folder. I was able to open the home folder but it said I was denied access to all the folders inside it, though I'm an administrator. It seems if I hit get info and add myself to the access list I can get into a folder, but is there a simpler way?

I just bought a new 15" MBP 3 days ago and got an Airport Extreme to replace my Linksys router. I have 3 Hard drives connected to it and I have no problems accessing the files when I am at home on my personal network but what if I am at school or work and I need those files. Is there some way for me to get to them remotely?

I've created subfolder bookmarks in Safari and see how you can place bookmarks on the Bookmarks Bar. But what is the "Bookmarks Menu" folder in Safari? It's just below the Bookmarks Bar when you see all your bookmarks? What do you use this Menu for?

while clearing up some HD space I noticed a strange folder located on the Macintosh HD. It appears to be named with a single Japanese or Chinese character (those being my best guesses, could definitely be something completely different) and reappears upon restart if deleted. I've attached a picture of what it looks like.

Title says it all really! The test remains, however, and you can still go into each folder, as it is still selectable.
This is a new 17 inch Macbook, Time Machine restored from a 15 inch one (including system files).
where I can recover the icon files (I think I can copy and paste the icon files into the preview section on the get info window)? Or if there is another solution?
Three other things, if you happen to know the answer as well:
1. I've just bought this screwdriver: [URL]
Will this be sufficient to replace the hard drive in my uMBP (considering it is all Philips screws)
2. Do you know if the Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Hard Drive can be restored using a clone, without slowdown consequences?
3. Do you know of any desktop images which, when selected to cycle for e.g. every 5 seconds, will create a cool effect? I'm thinking night and day scenes, identical images with different hues etc.

Ugh. So I was cleaning out my HD with 'WhatSize' and saw the 'private folder', which was about 4.6 GB. Thinking nothing of it and also suspecting that this might be the folder responsible for the my auto-depleting harddrive I trashed it. Upon stupidly emptying the trash I found that some files were emptied while most of them survived. Noticing that I wasn't able to open iTunes or even reinstall it, I restarted the computer.
Now, I can't get into Snow Leopard and have to use Windows (I have Bootcamp). I tried doing the "ditto /volumes..." command in single-user mode, but it says it couldn't find my username. I tried looking up the username with the 'launch ctl load' command, but it can't find the Directory Services file. Is there any way I can get Snow Lepoard back without losing any space? I have a lot of important media that I would really like to keep (photos, films, music, etc.)

I turned off my macbook pro last night, then when I went to turn it on this morning, I got a flashing folder with a question mark. So I ran lion internet recovery. Disk utility came up and so I tried to repair the disk and reinstall lion osx, the problem is my mac HD isn't showing up, so I couldn't run either. I haven't turned off my mac in a few weeks, I usually just put it to sleep at night or let it go idle. How to back-up my files.

Is there a way to customize the right click menu on a Mac magic mouse? I would like to add "select all" and "copy" without having to use keyboard shortcuts? If not, is there a 3rd-party software app that can accomplish this?
I am looking for a way to customize the contextual menu when I right click using the mouse to "select all" and "copy" in a Word document or a Web page.
I am running Mac OS 10.6.5 and using a Magic Mouse.

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

I have searched for this as much as possible but am not finding any conclusive answer and am not a techy enough to try and figure it out myself. My laptop restarted itself last night for no reason and when i restarted it, all the items on the desktop were no longer there and in the Macintosh HD folder there was a ~ file with what seemed like a system dump (approx 500kb in size) Now Firefox and iTunes no longer work. iTunes says it can not find the library file. Here are some images of what it looks like: [URL:...] and here is the log from around that time too. [URL:...] This happened 6 months ago when i tried to install CS 3 suite and i had to reinstalled OSX and start all from scratch. If i delete the file and restart the laptop, the file returns, and then it begins to no longer recognize external hard drives and the only way to access them is via Terminal. i am backing up what i can for the moment but would prefer to know what has happened and how to fix it.

That's what I see when my mouse is over any menu item and when it's not over any menu item. I've lost menu highlight on the menu bar and the contextual menu (via right click on files and folders) My system is running OS 10.5.2. I've already tried fixing disk permissions. It's like my mouse has gone into stealth mode. Interface can no longer detect my cursor is hovering over them. E.g. Hovering over a web link doesn't highlight that it's a link and status bar below doesn't print the url address of that link. Last thing I could remember was telling Opera 9.25 to give me a pop up regarding web cookies. That's when I lost menu highlight.

I have shared out a folder on my IMAC called "TV Shows" with several folders underneath this. I did this under System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing. I am trying to access this from my Windows 7 Media PC. Everyone just has read access because its just to watch TV Episodes. I have also enabled SMB Sharing for Windows. On my Windows 7 PC it connects however doesn't ask for a Username or Password? I thought the whole point of SMB was so that it would ask you for those details? For some reason when I connect I can go into some folders but not others? Is there any reason why I can only access some folders under "TV Shows" and not all the folders?

I know the Home Folder short name changing issue has been discussed already on here, and most people seem to advise either against it or to backup before proceeding. I just obtained my first MacBook Pro second hand, and it still has the previous owner's Home Folder and Short Name, even though he has deleted all his files from it, and there's only pretty much standard folders within it (Library, Applications), but nothing in them. I've been saving my own stuff elsewhere in another folder I created on the Mac HD drive. Is it fairly safe then to change his name over to my own following the steps on the Apple website, or would his home still be attached to certain important components? I'd rather not create a brand new account where I have to fiddle with settings again for everything, though I'm not sure if I may have to do that anyway. I'm using Leopard, by the way. The login he passed on at start-up still says administrator as a user name, though, not his shortname. Will that change also?

It appears that the Library folder that is in the Home Folder (e.g./Users/Home/Liberary)has been made invisible in OS 10.7.x. However I have seen it because after converting samples Logic showed me the folder and its contents. I would very much like to move the samples from their present location in this folder on the startup disk to the EXS 24 samples folder on the external RAID array that is dedicated to this purpose - - but I don't know how to make the Library folder visible.

My home folder appears to have gone missing from the Users folder in finder. See screenshot - I can see the test account I created and the shared folder but not my home folder.
I can still access my home folder via the sidebar but this causes problems with some software not being able to see my home folder in their browsers (Nikon Capture NX2 being an example).

Mac Pro 8 core with LG 21:9 monitor, res set to 3440x1440. It thinks there is also a Sony 1080P monitor attached. Some programs will open their window in some place I cannot see, I am assuming on the non existent monitor. There is no cycling through or access to anywhere else. If I open a new screen (#4) and try to open Messages it also will not display the window. The dock indicates that the program is open but if you click on the icon the program menu does not appear at the top of the screen.
