Jan 23, 2010Ugh. So I was cleaning out my HD with 'WhatSize' and saw the 'private folder', which was about 4.6 GB. Thinking nothing of it and also suspecting that this might be the folder responsible for the my auto-depleting harddrive I trashed it. Upon stupidly emptying the trash I found that some files were emptied while most of them survived. Noticing that I wasn't able to open iTunes or even reinstall it, I restarted the computer.
Now, I can't get into Snow Leopard and have to use Windows (I have Bootcamp). I tried doing the "ditto /volumes..." command in single-user mode, but it says it couldn't find my username. I tried looking up the username with the 'launch ctl load' command, but it can't find the Directory Services file. Is there any way I can get Snow Lepoard back without losing any space? I have a lot of important media that I would really like to keep (photos, films, music, etc.)

OS X :: Finder Closes When Trying To Open Macintosh HD
Jul 1, 2010I've just noticed this happening tonight. I did perform todays Mac Update but I don't know if they are related. Whenever I try to open "Macintosh HD" (my boot drive) the Finder closes. Does anyone know what the solution could be? I was able to run a "verify disk" and it said there were errors so I did a reboot to my Snow Leopard start up disk and was able to repair the errors.
I've googled everything I can think of and can't seem to find anyone else with this issue. I'd rather not have to reimage the machine. Upon further investigation I've noticed that the problem seemed to have started on June 20th. I can access the back-up folders of my Time Machine for "Macintosh HD" for all dates prior but starting on the 20th if I try to access the Macintosh HD backup folder, Finder shuts down just as it does with the current Macintosh HD.

May 6, 2009I'm having some trouble adding network printers in Tiger. If I open the print&fax window and then click on the "+" sign to add printers, nothing comes up. I thought a new screen was supposed to pop up, but nothing happens. If I try to print something from Word or Excel and select "add printer" in the print menu, also nothing happens. I do find a list of "bonjour printers", but I'm not sure how this can help me. So in the end it seems I can't add any printers at all, and thus not print.

Apr 23, 2010I have the latest 17" i7 macbook pro and installed windows 7 64 bit on 100 gb partition. Long story short, I decided to delete the partition for now and install another time. It deleted fine, but every time I turn the computer on, it will load and say " no bootable device" but if I turn on holding option, the mac partition shows up fine and loads normally when I click on it. I just need help completely getting rid of the partition. My Mac hd says 500gb capacity. So its not partitioned any more.

Aug 29, 2014I have my own, private, Macbook Air which is not used by my spouse. As a result, I have only configured my own e-mail accounts on this machine. It runs OSX 10.9.4.Â
We also have a family-used iPad, which is shared between multiple family members, including my spouse. It has multiple e-mail accounts configured, including mine and hers. None of us uses iCloud mail, just mail from external providers.Â
My wife is used to the auto-fill in Mail on the iPad : Any recipient from the past is used to autocomplete. As a result, she never built an address book since typing most of the names or first characters of her contacts resulted in completing the full e-mail address. The iPad does have an iCloud-based address book configured, which only contains my personal contacts. This iCloud account is also configured on my MBA.Â
During the past weeks I've put a lot of effort in cleaning up my Contacts, since they were swamped with outdated e-mail addresses. I also deleted the complete Previous Recipient list via Window/Previous Recipients, since outdated e-mail addresses were being suggested while they were removed out of my Contacts during clean up. I cleaned up the previous recipients list, assuming that applies only to the local Mail installation. But it does not.
Since the iCloud based contacts are shared between mail clients, the Previous Recipients list is as well, which was a nasty surprise. Apparently my wife can no longer experience any of her contacts being auto-completed on the iPad or other Macs in our house. This is a big issue (marital crisis) and I want to restore the previous recipients list. In the pre-iCloud days this was possible by restoring the correct file via Time Machine (which I use). But in the current iCloud days, the previous recipients list is, as far as I know, completely in the cloud. There is no (known) way for me to revert to a previous version.Â
How to restore the iCloud-based previous recipient list? can I restore a local copy that overwrites/syncs correctly with the cloud-based copy?Â

Jan 13, 2009I am having problem with my Mac Air. For some reason when I go to Finder, there is no list of Shared computers. However, when I open Finder on my MacBook Pro it shows all shared computers in the area. From my MacBook Pro I can see the shared Mac Air, but nothing in shared of Mac Air. All shared setting on on MacBook Pro. Plus there more shared computers on the network. I think something wrong with Mac Air settings.

Aug 3, 2009I just got an iMac. For the first few hours it was turned on, my MBP showed up in the iMac's Finder, and vice versa. However now, for the past two days, neither Mac has shown up in the others Finder. Connecting to afp://[their ip address] lets me see the public folders, but I still can't use the shared iTunes libraries, or share screens.
The same thing happened with the MBP and other Windows/Linux devices on the network, as well as my jailbroken iPod with Netatalk installed, but I just chalked that up to the klugey nature of mixed networking. Guess that wasn't the problem.
OS X :: SL - Selecting Files In Finder In List View?
Sep 4, 2009Under Leopard and prior, in List view you can highlight a line by selecting anywhere on the line. However, to actually select the file to drag it, etc, you had to select the file name itself, clicking the date etc wouldn't allow you to drag the file.
Well, in Snow Leopard, you can now select anywhere on the line and it will allow you to drag the file(s). Pretty nice.
However.....this causes a weird UI issue. If the window you are working in is small enough so that the items in list view fill it up completely (so there is a scroll bar), you can no longer right click on any empty space or the date/filesize etc to pull up the contextual menu for example to create a New Folder.
If there is empty space below the file list, then it still allows you to right click to get the menu.
OS X :: Finder - Jumps To Bottom Of Directory List?
Jan 4, 2010Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I an issue with finder, when I open up any drive and then click say a folder/directory starting with the letter A, then click on a sub-folder, finder jumps to the very bottom of the top level folder/directory list. This forces me each time to then scroll back to the top where I was working.
It easier to see than describe the fault/feature, so hope this makes sense.

Most are the older versions of the applications. Does anyone know how to edit this list so only the current version of each application is shown?
