MacBook Pro :: Taking Longer Than Usual To Startup / Shut Down

Jul 21, 2010

My late 2008 15" MacBook Pro has been taking a lot longer than usual to start up and shut down (lengthy spin wheel cycles).

It is completely up to date with Snow Leopard and I almost never download 3rd party software. I pretty much only use the included iLife apps and a bit of iWork, so I'm not sure what could be slowing the process down. I was thinking I could reinstall Snow Leopard.

OS X :: MacBook Taking Longer To Shut Down?

Jan 24, 2010

Just recently my MacBook (10.6.2) has started to take around a minute to shut down instead of about 2 seconds like it always has done. It displays a lightish blue screen with the loading symbol as seen below the apple logo when starting up any machine. The only thing I have done differently recently is started using an external monitor and kb/mouse. Although I have disconnected all of these and it still does it.

OS X :: Beep On Startup As Usual

Mar 17, 2010

When I turn on my macbook pro I'm getting a single beep followed by nothing. It started happening all of a sudden a few days ago. Following the beep, I hold down the power button to turn it off again and start it up and then usually get nothing a couple of times - eventually after 2/3 goes at turning it on and off, it'll eventually start up as usual. I've read that 1 beep signals a problem with RAM? Is that right? The RAM I have in there what it came with so I can't imagine it's that.

Mac Pro :: HD Spinning While Sleep - Shut Down Taking Long Time?

Mar 24, 2008

I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But! I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...

1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.

I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard. It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!

Mac Pro :: Disk Scratched - System Taking Longer To Rip CDs

Jun 1, 2010

I have a brand new 15 inch i5 mbp. I put a cd in to rip it onto itunes. It was really scratched. Now the computer ate my disc (I know I can restart and it will be ok, that's not my question). Shouldn't my brand new mbp be able to cope with a scratched disc? It seems a bit bizarre that the entire computer would freeze just because a disc is scratched. Also, it seems like it takes much longer to rip cds than it does on my pc. It doesn't just seem like it. It takes almost twice as long.

OS X :: 7200RPM Drive Taking Longer To Boot Than Old 5400?

Apr 22, 2009

I used CCC to clone my Hitachi 250gb 5400 rpm macbook pro drive to a Hitachi 320gb 7200 rpm drive.

I installed it myself (it's not hard to do at all took 20 minutes) and everything went fine but it seems as though before I see the Apple logo appear, my MacBook Pro now sits at a blank gray screen right when I turn it on for 10-15 seconds longer than it ever did prior to this upgrade.

Another interesting tidbit is that even though I made an exact clone of the drive with CCC, it seems that ALL of my LittleSnitch rules were dumped as LS asked me to verify everything all over again for MobileMe, Safari, FireFox, SimplifyMedia, Time.Apple.com, etc... Not sure why that happened.

I also noticed that on my original HDD it says "Apple Firmware Version" on the HDD label, is this why the new drive takes longer to boot? Does apple have a special firmware for it's drives that it's sourcing from Hitachi?

MacBook Pro :: Why Does Fan Run More Than Usual

Mar 23, 2012

When I 1st got my computer, I seem to remember it running full-screen video without using the fan. Now, when I look at a regular video in a window, the fan well run pretty heavily. Is this just a function of having a 2-year-old computer? It can't keep up with advances in software and compression, or is it a matter of accumulating “stuff” on it that makes it run less efficiently? Or is it because I run it on an external monitor? It is held on its side in a book arc stand. I thought this was supposed to make it run cooler, not faster?

OS X :: Mac Loads Slower Than Usual?

Aug 10, 2009

Well, my Macbook [white 2,1] has been running at a normal speed and all, but up until a few days ago, my internet has been noticeably slower. I view a lot of pictures and manga/comics online, so when i click to go to the next it loads very slowly, Youtube videos take a long time to load, and buffer every few seconds.

Normally, they would go smoothly and fast, I'm wirelessly connected to my router which hasn't changed and I've been in the same area of my house too. The desktop and other laptop that my family members use don't have this problem either. My family uses a Telus cnnection.

I've already cleared cookies and cache, I went into the Cookies folder from spotlight and deleted all inside it and emptied trashbin.

New To Mac Using Air For Travelling Sales And Usual Personal Stuff

Mar 31, 2012

We ahve taken the Mac plunge. We purchased an 21.5' iMac and 13" Air refurbished, both are X 10.7 with the extended care and 1 to 1 for both of us.I am also picking up a new Timecapsule 2TB.I am wondering about questions of setup and apps to use.We are clumsy with this stuff and only familiar with MS Office and Outlook. Our use does not include gaming, music, or hardcore picture manipulations. My business use does not require building spreadsheets and usually viewing only.I have not used Powerpoint type presentations but am preparing to learn to.I also plan to add simple graphics skills to draw simple tooling schematics.I am in the oilpatch service industry in Canada. We like simple clean programs that do not shove prompts down your throat ot presume to know what we want.Dare I say we are very tired of the bloated insecure world of PCs, no insult intended. We don't need endless fonts and templates.

Is MS Office for Mac a requirement? Will Works do what we need? Will Safari replace Outlook or would you pick another app like Firefox? What about search engines for Mac? What virus protection programs and utilities are handiest?Using hindsight if you were making tha transition to Apple this week what would be your basic setup decisions? The biggest concern is will I be compatible with my business colleagues?
