MacBook Pro :: Green And Purple Vertical Stripes And Not Rebooting?
Sep 1, 2009
while surfing the internet (I was reading an article on CNN and scrolling down to continue reading), the screen color changed to tinges of green and purple. The entire thing froze...no keys, no mouse, not even force quit...nothing. I had no choice but to do a hard shut down by holding down the power button until the laptop just shut off (Macbook Pro). In the middle of rebooting, (at the grey screen with the apple logo on it, I got the familiar circular dial that ticks around as it loads) a screen wipe similar to the effect of some screen savers went from the top of the screen to the bottom turning the screen from grey into green and purple vertical stripes.
It also said "you need to restart your computer" and proceeded to tell me how to do so in four different languages. Upon doing so, the same thing happened...several times. I tried booting it into safe mode by holding down the shift key until the grey apple background appeared and it seemed to be working as the loading was taking forever. Alas, the same thing happened. I took the battery out and held down the power button for 10 seconds, put the battery back in only to suffer the same effect. The next genius bar reservation isn't until Friday.

When I turn on computer it starts with a white screen with 5 purple stripes. These turn to a full screen of purple squares.

I have a MacBook Pro with Leopard. On boot, I get a screen of vertical blue stripes with the Apple logo, sometimes intact, sometimes split across the stripes. The spinning activity wheel is there too. After about 30 seconds, it gives up the ghost and the screen goes blank. It's still powered on, but just the screen is blank.
I've attached an image of what the screen looks like.
I've tried Command Option PR to reset the PRAM and VRAM but the problem remains. Any ideas?

For about two weeks I've noticed green vertical stripes appearing on my early 2008 MacBook Pro. As you can see the photo below, it doesn't completely obscure content on the screen. The problem is also transient. It appears, sometimes as a flash, then disappears. In the picture below, the issue continued for longer than ever before (about 1 min). Is my video card about to die? Could this be a bad connection?

My cursor (in all forms) on my macbook seems to be disappearing--it appears that every other column of pixels has gone clear as well as a clear border, leaving only a few black vertical stripes as the normal cursor. It's a black outline when it's the hand and it's a few colored stripes when it's the spinning wait cursor.
Interestingly, when you do the ctrl+zoom in a few degrees, the cursor reappears.
If anyone thinks it matters, I was in the middle of backing up via time machine when it disappeared...

I'm having huge issues with my 20-inch early 2008 iMac running 10.7.3. I upgraded my RAM (to 4Gb) 8 months ago and everything was running nice and easy until I upgraded to Lion. Either one of these things happen:Â My screen goes entirely grey or blue with white faded thin vertical stripes at random timesMac freezes working with any Adobe applications (mouse cursor still works but I can't click anything until I turn off and on)Mac freezes for a while and after a 30-second delay clicking and pressing buttons frantically everything goes back to normalÂ
The strangest thing is that when I play Sims 3 for example (a beast of RAM and video drainer) nothing happens. I tried almost everything from repairing permissions to re-install my memory modules. I couldn't run the hardware test.Â
Note: I live in Brazil so sending my machine to a Genius Bar is completely off the question.

So I have this collection of pixels near the bottom of my screen but they're only visible over a dark grey area, like when you're in the login screen (I have an early 2013 MBPr 15 btw)Â
It's probably a problem with the screen itself and not the GPU (or maybe the connection between them?) since if I take a screenshot it's not visible and I've connected it to an external monitor and it doesn't have it.Â
I took a picture of said problem [URL] .....
I've had this for a few weeks now and I've tried those youtube videos (I just to have some image retention after leaving something to run for a long time) which have decreased the amount of pixels. They all dissapeared for a few hours and now they're back.

I was sitting with my MacBook Pro, when out of no where, purple vertical lines began flickering on the screen. I tried getting them to stop, then eventually just shut down my laptop. When I went to power it up again, it first popped up with the white apple screen and chime, then a gray screen dropped down with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.".
I tried the Power button option first, but the computer does not come back on. When I press the Power button again, it does the same thing all over again. I do not know where the "Restart button" is, so I haven tried that. I have also tried pulling the battery and restarting, restarting in safe mode by holding the shift key at start up, and trying control-r and control-s functions. None of which worked.

I have a first generation macbook pro, recently i have been getting neon green and purple blotches appearing on my screen. I was also having a hard drive problem so i swapped that out and installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on there and was still having the green and purple show up so I know that it is hardware related. I also have hooked up an external monitor and they show up on that monitor too so I konw the problem is not related to my monitor.. I downloaded fan control and have found that if I keep my macbook under 53 degrees C then They wont show up nearly as often but they still do. The only problem with this is that to keep it under 53 degrees C then I need to have the fans running extremely fast the entire time which is not really solving the problem...any suggestions?

I own a MacPro1,1 that has a Geforce 7300 GT running on it. That video card comes with one Dual-Link DVI port, and anonther that is Single-Link. I just bought a Dell 30" 3008WFP monitor that has a max resolution of 2560x1900.
When I first connected, it worked great. I was getting the max res; life was good. Then I started getting this random green fuzzy screen that would come and go at whim. I couldn't reproduce it, and worse was I have not figured out a way to get rid of it. Early on, just unplugging and replugging in the cable worked. Then that stopped working. Rebooting stopped working. Once i was able to get the green to go away by powering down the display and powering it back up. Yes, totally random.
Here are some more facts:
1. Setting a lower resolution doesn't rid me of the green fuzz effect.
2. If i connect to the same monitor using the single-link DVI port, everything works great, but only reaches 1920X1600 (as expected).
3. Connecting to different monitor using the Dual-Link DVI port works fine, albeit that the other monitor has a lesser max resolution.
4. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and I have all my software updates in place.
5. I've attached a screenshot of what this looks like.

I have a macbook pro (late 2007-2.4ghz). Nearly a year ago I had my logic board changed as there were no display on the monitor though my computer was working. They said it is a production mistake and my logic board would be changed even if it was not on warranty. But now when my computer overheats a green vertical line at the left side of my monitor displays. when it cools this line disappears.know 17 inch unibody macbook pros had same issue with 9600 gts graphic cards. My graphic card is 8800m gt. Is there a solution for that or I had to change my logic board again?

My A1226 is really giving me fits. It will display persistent vertical pink and green pixel column patterns in windows or over the entire screen at start up. I have twice performed the "PRAM Re-set" with Command-Option-P-R depressed with pwer on and that has worked. But tonight it came back and I had to do it a third time. Is this a potential or probable power/battery problem? I hope someone here is familiar with this!

So at some point before, i noticed this line of colors on the left side of my mac, althrough its not bad it became bigger; still i ignored it anyway. Then just a while ago i saw another small colorful line on the right, its way smaller than the other line which has the length of the entire screen. But i want to get rid of the lines already, its only really visible when i have a white screen, but it is still noticable without a white screen. i don't know if its just a bug on my mac, or a hardware fail. The lines when i look at it is like seeing a hypnotic ray when i move...

I have a Samsung 50" plasma HDTV (1365x768). Whenever try to connect my 13" unibody MacBook pro to the TV (HDMI cable + Mini DisplayPort->HDMI adapter ---> HDMI/DVI input in my TV), I get black stripes on each side of the screen. It's really annoying when watching a movie.
I use SwitchResX, I'm attaching screenshots with my settings. I'm also attaching pictures of those stupid stripes. I don't want to buy any more adapters and cables because they are pricey here where I live.

I've had my Macbook (10.5.8) for over two years and have had no problems until recently. It's crashed twice in the past month, and before that (for a few months) it has been extremely slow. I've cleaned out everything I didn't need and placed most of my documents onto a external hard drive in hopes that this would speed things up - it has not. When the thing crashes it basically reboots itself with out any warning, losing my data. Both times this has happened I had photoshop and Acrobat 6.0 Professional open (I've been editing photos of texts of my research and turning them into pdf - some of these files are quite large (400 colored pages) ie. 600mb). The system usually crashes and reboots while I am editing an unsaved pdf in Acrobat.

In photos, the vivid colors are great, but when reading text, surfing, googleing etc.. the super 'vivid' blues (which actually look purpleish to my eye) are just too much. Color calibration doesnt seem to be able to do much with this, and I think alot has to do with the drivers. Anyone else annoyed by this? More importantly, anyone annoyed to the point of fixing the problem? Maybee using new drivers, or some good settings you can pass along?

This problem suddenly started today. I had my Mac Book on and it suddenly turned off, went to black, and automatically rebooted. After less than a minute, it repeated this again and again. There was a "click" heard most of the time when the screen when to black. I tried running the laptop with only AC, and then only battery.

I was using my Mac normally. I tried to open iTunes and got an error. I decided to restart the computer. Restarting was going normally, but at the stage of entering username and password, Mac tells me that my startup disk is full. I proceed, Mac recognises password and it gets me to the regular screen and mouse arrow appears. Nothing happens then. No icons, prgrams, nothing. I can't delete anything as I have no icons. What should I do? I tried rebooting few times but get the same thing.
