Nov 2, 2010i am contemplating buying a late 2008 mbp air i found for $800 on CL. it has the 1.86 ghz 2gig ram and an 128 gb ssd. would that be comparable to the new 2010 version? i know the new one will edge it out, but by how much? i do a lot of art using flash, illustrator, and ps but just want to use this machine occasionally when i travel, ill have another machine for the heavy lifting if needed be. is that a good deal? or should i just wait and get the 2010 version which is double that?

Oct 2, 2009I am listening to the same songs on Itunes playing on a late 2008, Early 2009 Macbook Pro 15 compared to a brand new MBP 15 and the speakers (or the sound) seems much better on the older Pro still running Leopard (more base and deeper sound), as opposed to the new one running SL. Has anything changed that would account for this? Are they the same system running off of different operating systems, or has the hardware changed. And is there anything to do about it?

Nov 11, 2009i just ordered a late 2008 macbook pro 15 with the dual GPUs (9400m and 9600m GT) and I'm a little worried about the battery life.
-What can I expect if just doing normal every day stuff (web surfing mostly?)
-does watching a movie off of the hard disk use less battery than watching it off a DVD? Is there a big difference?
I'm not a big gamer but would like to have the horsepower to play a game should one come out that I want. I'm also not a big traveler so battery times are only of average importance.
Basically, I'm asking if I made a good purchase considering I have only average concerns for both battery and game performance. They had the new 7 hour battery 15" macbook pro for the same price but it doesn't have the dual GPUs.

Feb 21, 2010Long story short, I now have a late 2008 15" MBP with a broken display housing, LCD housing, and glass bezel. The LCD itself, along with the iSight etc., is functional. I have the opportunity to buy a display assembly for the mid 2009 MBP, including a new screen, for a good price.
Would replacing the entire display assembly with the mid 2009 assembly work?
Or could I buy the new assembly and simply replace the screen with my current one?
Essentially, what is the compatibility of the two units. I'd prefer the mid 2009 screen for obvious reasons.I searched the forums here, as well as searching many other places, and I have not found the answer.

Jun 7, 2010I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. and lately whenever i been running on battery, the computer has been randomly powering off. as it it losing all power, but it doesn't seem to matter what level the battery is at. but once i plug the AC adapter it, i do not have any kind of problem. i guess it could just be a dead battery.

Jul 19, 2010I'm running a late 2008 Macbook Pro with OS 10.6.4. The battery life is terrible. Like, in the hour and fifteen minute range on a full charge. I've tried turning everything off, wifi, bluetooth, screen brightness down and turned off the keyboard backlights. If I have no applications running, it will sometimes estimate a maximum of about two hours, but never actually give me more than about an hour and a half--if all I'm doing is surfing the net.
About three months ago I replaced the internal drive with a Hitatchi 500gb drive of the same RPM as the original (5400rpm). That's the only major modification to the machine I've made and the battery life was already a problem from starters. Does it sound like there's something wrong with the battery, or is it more likely there's something else causing problems?

Hardly the quoted 7 hours that Apple spec, and I am simply doing light web browsing, nothing else.Am I doing something wrong? The machine sits connected to magsafe 90% of the time, but I cannot envisage that would cause any problem, as it knows when it is charged, so afaik no more current can get to the battery to damage it

Nov 4, 2009Leopard 10.5.8 runs fine on this 2.26ghz Mac Mini. BUT every time I try to install Snow Leopard, with about ten minutes left in the installation process, I get a kernel panic. The only thing I can think of that is doing this is either 1. I am driving a 30" Cinema Display through a mini dvi to dvi adapter on the Mini -- reducing resolution but still running it fine (I do this with my 12" Powerbook 1.5ghz as well, doing it now as a matter of fact. It makes the picture huge but fine for me at moment) 2. 3rd Party Ram bought at Fry's Patriot 2 x 2GBs ... but passed hardware tests and no problems in 10.5.8. 3. I have not done all the imovie/garageband/idvd/remote desktop/itunes 9 updates in Leopard. I have done all the other updates to 10.5.8 and don't use these apps, so can't see how this is affecting a Snow Leopard update. Any thoughts? It quits and kernel panics during the Snow Leopard update. It was kernel panicking in Leopard, too, when using iPhoto a few weeks ago. Wondering if it is something to do with the Mini Dvi to Dvi adapter (not dual link) to 30" Cinema Display?

Oct 31, 2010I am trying to decide whether to get the 2010 model or the cheaper 2009 model. These are the differences that I've found so far for the base model. For arguments sake, let's say they both have 4gb ram (most people selling them have upgraded to 4gb)
2010: 2.4ghz, longer battery, nvidia 320m
2009: 2.26ghz, (slightly) shorter battery, nvidia 9400m
Having a slightly slower cpu, less battery life (about 7 hours rather than 9) and a slightly weaker gpu don't bother me so much, as I will be mostly using the macbook pro for internet surfing and writing word documents
My question is, are there any other differences? (that would make me go for the 2010 rather than the 2009 model) - maybe differences in the display? shape? something else?

Sep 10, 2010I like to DJ in my spare time and use the macbook for my software program, but using the integrated cam doesnt give a good angle at my mixers. I used the xbox live vision cam with my PC laptop, but I got rid of it and only have the macbook now. Ive tried just plugging it in and I dont know how to access it. I occasionally do live mixes on stickam where you dont get to choose which cam to use. So if I can get the xbox cam to work, how can I temporarily disable the integrated cam?

I just received my 15" Macbook Pro ( Mid 2009, the most recent update ), and noticed right away at just how blurry the screen is.
Comparing it to other laptops around me, and my desktops monitors... the text on the Macbook's screen looks blurry compared to them all.
Now Im making it sound like it's horrible, and it's really not... I just expected it to be a lot crisper and sharper.
