MacBook Pro :: DVD Drive Won't Read Disks
Sep 24, 2009
I have the early 2006 17" first intel Macbook pro , My DVD drive stopped reading any Drive i put into , I've noticed that a couple of weeks back, but it would read them after a while.
Today I've tried installing SL on it and the drive keeps on spinning and spinning and the it would be ejected out , I've tried several times to no avail , tried switching users and it read the install DVD, pressed on install and it started installing , it required rebooting when the computer rebooted it stopped reading the drive!
Tried remote disk method to no avail, it cannot read other disk drives on the same network while the other computers read its drive, I've made sure that the share DVD option from the sharing pane in system preferences was enabled on both machines...

I've been clearing out my loft, and found my old Macintosh Plus, keyboad, mouse and software from my student days. If still powers up and works!Anyway, I also found a disk box of some 24 * 3.5" 800k floppies of my old work, dissertation, and things, and would really like to get these onto a current machine as well as Mac Project and MacWrite, MacPaint etc. to read them.I've an old 12" G4 Powerbook which I rebuilt with 10.4.11 so it runs Classic, but I now need someway of getting the files off the 3.5" floppies. The Mac+ has no ethernet only the old Appletalk. I tried my local Mac Store who wanted to sell me a nice new USB floppy drive which was PC compatible. Now I know the old SuperDrives could read these old 800Kb disks but will a modern drive read them as well? The Mac Expert in store didn't have a clue, and to be frank it didn't look like he was even born when these were around.any other suggestions on transferring these files?

i just posted this but i don't think in the right place as i have been assigned a ticket number and rec'd an email telling me my ip is logged..i hope they don't charge for advice! I'm a desperate woman with a small wallet at the moment. i have a ibook g3 running osx 10.4.2 toast titanium 6 and suddenly she is indicating there is no disc in the drive when i go to use toast and i realize it is not appearing on the desktop nor elsewhere just in ATA. it is neither reading nor writing from the disk drive. the optical drive isn't seeing it. i have tried rebooting and different disks but it doesn't respond. i am not a seasoned veteran here, I'm a layman. I do know when i look under ABOUT THIS MAC: It lists the following:
SONY CD-RW CRX800E:
Model: SONY CD-RW CRX800E
Revision: 1.3g
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 1
Socket Type: Internal

Put a CD into my 2007 MacBook Pro today to find it immediatly ejected it without even trying to read it. Happens with all disks. I've had a similar problem where it would fail to read disks & eject them after about 20 seconds, that turned out just to be a dusty laser, this is different, takes about 5 seconds before ejecting.

I have an older Power Mac G5 that I had problems with, and hoped I could get a little help.I wanted to start fresh, so I booted the Mac OSX software disk that came with the computer, and I was able to get my computer back to factory fresh (software-wise). After I reloaded the OSX (and did all of the software updates from Apple), I tried loading a program from an original installation CD/DVD. It would not load--it tried, but eventually ejected the disk. This happened over and over--I tried different types of discs (music CDs, DVDs, software), and the ONLY CDS/DVDs that work are the MAC OSX installation discs. I have tried using a DVD lense cleaner and compressed air.

So I'm trying to upgrade an older MacBook from an 80GB hard drive to a 250 GB hard drive and from 1 to 2GB of RAM. Easy things to upgrade, done it dozens of times before. Here's the catch; I don't have the original install disks in my possession and need to upgrade this by next week. Also, the optical drive is totally fried but I don't want to replace it. So, is it possible to do this without having to buy an external optical drive/without the original install disks?

never really had a terrible problem with this computuer until the last few months with the battery wearing out and having to replace the charging cord twice but now it seems like I have a problem here. Earlier today, less than an hour ago, i burned a CD for my buddy, when i went to burn the second disk, it didnt want to accept it. Finally, when it did, it wouldnt read I had a disk in it. When i got home, i tried other cds/dvds and it wouldnt read them either. It was making a rather bad sound, kind of like an alarm sound. The CD will not spin and is ejeceted shortly after. I was planning on bootcamping my Macbook Pro later this weekend, but if i can not get this to work, I wont be able to. I dont think i have Apple Care and the nearest apple store is about a 2 hour drive from my house.Â

I recently tried to use the CD drive on my MacBook Pro, and it has been a while since I last remember using it, but when I tried to put a cd in, it wasnt automatically drawn in as I pushed it in most of the way. At first I didn't notice the cd drive was not drawing the disk in, and I shoved it all the way in, and it wouldn't eject either, so I had to pull it out. I restarted my computer and the drive still doesnt work. My battery says service battery, but I don't really think that has anything to do with the cd drive.

If I have iTunes on an SSD drive (the boot drive in my Mac Mini), can it read the music library on a second rotational hard drive? I'd like not to have the large music library on a 120GB SSD drive.

Bought a MacBook about a year and half ago and have had no issues until today. I have been able to burn numerous CD's and DVD's but for some reason today when I tried to burn a CD it keeps spitting the blank CD out. I doesn't seem to recognize any disk. When I put a disk in it makes a quiet noise like it's trying to read it but after a few seconds spits it out. No application seems to recognize any disk either.

I plan on buying a new MBP this week and I am going to sell my old macbook to a friend of a friend. I seemed to have misplaced my Snow Leopard discs somewhere and was wondering if I could use the new disks with my new computer to reformat my drive? If not, are there any other options short of paying $30 to re-buy SL for this machine?

I am wanting to replace the hard drive in my macbook but I don't have the os disks that came with the computer (I've recently moved and they're beyond lost). I've read where apple can send me replacements (I assume I'd have to pay for them). Can I get the leopard upgrade and use that, or it just that, an upgrade and I need osx already on the computer. I don't care about backing up anything, as theres nothing on it of any importance, all my music and photos are on an external hard drive.

it kind of just happened suddenly but my new aluminum iMac can not read CD/DVDs nor show them as an icon on the desktop. I don't know if this matters but it stopped reading them shortly after I preformed a mount with toast titanium on a mac universal binary image. Also, if I put a disk in, it thinks for a bit, then spits it out. I think I may have shut down the computer without dismounting the image and I don't know if that may contribute to the problem.

First, my MacBook is a little more than a year old and is no longer covered under warranty, so I would like to try any possible fixes (like cleaning the drive) before having to buy a new drive. Here's my problem: when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, it spins around and clicks a lot but never seems to really catch, and after about a minute or so of this, it ejects itself. It never shows up on my desktop, so the computer is unable to read anything from the CD or DVD. I know the problem is not the CD or DVD, because I've tried the same discs on other machines and they work fine. This problem came up on me gradually. It started happening a few months ago, and maybe only 1 out of 10 or 20 discs would it do this. Then it became a third of the time, then half of the time, and now it's about 99% of the time I try to insert a disc. I was able to get one disc to work a few days ago, but when I ejected it and reinserted it, it didn't work the second time.

I have a " 12Mac iBook G3 (700mhz/128mb/20gb) with combo drive (12.1 16VRAM) Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2102. System software installed: OS 10.4.1. I'm a longtime Mac user (have a beige G3 desktop at home and a blue and white G4 desktop at work fairly familiar with OS-X), but by no means a true technie. My brother borrowed it for a couple of months, installed some software he needed to do some work with, then shipped it back to me via UPS. Now, the CD/DVD drive rejects all audio, data or video disks -- the drive whirs for anywhere from about 15 seconds to a couple of minutes, then the tray pops back out. Some disks seem to stay in the drive, but no icon ever appears on my desktop and no interactivity begins with the disk. I've tried inserting disks 30 or 40 times and maybe 3 or 4 have mounted to the point the disk icons appeared onscreen. Of those, a couple were audio and did not start to play music (although in one case, I got iTunes open and the tracks seemed to be registering).
In another case, I got a software CD to mount and tried copying its contents to my desktop , but an hour and a half after it started trying to copy the files, an error message appeared -- sorry, didn't manage to write it down). I have tried booting it up with an old OS 9 installer CD and that seemed to work (although the splash page was the gray apple with spinning gear beneath it -- not what I expected to see from a system 9 cd startup?). A friend told me to try that and if it worked, it might indicate this is a software-related problem rather than hardware, but I don't know. Prior to rejecting disks, the drive seems to whir at a fairly normal volume -- nothing violent or unusual. Sometimes it sounds as if it is working hard and sometimes it is fairly smooth sounding, but as I said, I haven't been able to really DO anything with a disk of any kind since receiving it back from my brother. He says it worked great for him -- before and after he installed some new software -- and that he was using audio, visual and data disks on a regular basis while in his hands.
The computer and all programs seem to work just fine -- except for the combo drive. The only other thing I can add is that he managed to lose two of the remaining rubber feet off the bottom, so now only the battery corner has a rubber foot. Does that slight imbalance make any difference to the reading ability of the drive, by any chance? Any suggestions you can give me to check the cause or cure this problem would be greatly appreciated. My brother is in the dog house with me, yet I do believe him when he says it worked great for him. Also, the shipping container looked fine and he did a good job of bubble-wrapping it. IF it had been dropped by Mr. UPS, could this have caused a problem even if the box looked good? (Shipping was insured, by the way.)

I just got hit with a double whammy. :Imac running Panther did something odd to the it's external drive. That was formatted fat 32. I plan to see if anyone in the nearby computer repair class can recover those files, but in the meantime (days!) the gremlin also hit the macbook, putting it in range of a spill. So now the only backups I have are on the second external drive formatted with a mac format on the macbook. This one was done with 2 partitions, one for Time Machine, one for the stuff I was yanking over from the other hard drive.
So now I find that Imac can't even SEE the second drive. (Not that I expected it to see or recognize Time Machine, just the other part.) My macbook is on downtime until it gets checkup/cleaning (with all mac places nearby apparently closed thru New Years and classes I need it for starting right after) Does anyone know a way to get "Ye Old Imac" to see the other drive? Is there a driver or something? I know it's very hard to find older software (most online sites don't go back past Tiger), but it is a mac format for goodness sake! I can't even be 100% sure if it's something to do with a newer mac format for the external drive or "Ye Old Imac" is just being grumpy. It seems to see the other USB stuff but it has been known to lose touch with them.

My Macbook Pro suddenly won't read my 750GB WD Elements Hard drive. It was working earlier today but when I went to press play on my TV show in VLC it said the files couldn't be read. So i reopended them all and they still didn't work. I closed down all programs running that could possibly be using my hard drive but it said it was being used so I force ejected it and when I plugged it back in it didn't work.
It comes up with an error message "this disk can't be read by this computer" but it still shows up in disk utility. In disk utility though it says it is a 2.2TB hard drive which confuses me. also I the buttons for "verify disk" and "repair disk" are greyed out.

I put a cd in the slot drive to burn to my itunes. At first it seemed to behave as normal, it sucked the disk in, made noise, all that good stuff. Well I went to itunes to find the disk and it didn't show. It didn't show up in finder either. I decided to eject and try again, but the disk wouldn't eject. Since then there's been no noises from the drive. It seems like the drive just died, like it's not even trying to start up or work. The cd is literally a week old, and has been in my car cd player since I bought it, so I know the disk is clean. Also, I used the drive a week or two ago to burn several disks and had no problems with it. All my software is up to date and it reads the drive as being there, it just doesn't work.Â
I've spent a few hours troubleshooting this. Like I said, the computer doesn't even seem to realize there's a disk in the drive. I've tried restarting while holding down the mouse (well, trackpad actually), repairing permissions, blowing in compressed air, tried ejecting with terminal, gravity, resetting the SMC, and probably a couple other things I'm forgetting.Â

I recently borrowed my brother's laptop to use as a media station for listening to music from, and watching movies, in order to free up some space on my main macbook. In trying to migrate some files over, I discovered that my hard drive, a 320 GB WD Elements drive, is having some problems which I've never encountered before. It has always worked fine in the past, but now I can't transfer any files to or from it, from either computer. In all of my troubleshooting, I've gotten various errors, (-36, -50), and various messages saying how the device can't be read or written from, or how some files contian unreadable data, etc.Disk Utility found an unused node when verifying the disk, and notified me that the disk needed to be repaired.I then used Disk Utility, which said it was able to successfully repair it, but the same problem remains, and after verifying the disk, it still says it needs to be repaired.I've tried to find any files that may be causing the problem, and was finally able to delete a seemingly troublesome file that was stuck in my trash bin from the external drive after trying various apps, (ie Trash It, Cocktail, What's Keeping Me?).This didn't end up solving anything...I've used terminal to eliminate some other potentially problematic files, with no luck still, and I'm not too confident with Terminal so I don't want to be messing around too much without more guidance.
I've used Disk Warrior to try to solve the problem, but still with no success. When I use the app to Check All Files and Folders, it does so for only a few seconds, then reports that "An unexpected error ocurred while attempting to perform file operations" for several files, and that several files' "Property list is damaged and cannot be repaired". When using Disk Warrior to REBUILD the drive, the app pauses for about 15 seconds, then says that it can't be rebuilt because it is in use.Again, I've used the What's Keeping Me? app to kill any activity with the drive, and the same error occurs.I've spent a lot of time trying to sort this out.
