I have a white 2.0 Ghz MacBook running Tiger 10.4.8 with the latest firmware updates, and 2 GB RAM. I also have an external IDE drive partitioned as FAT32, sitting in a relatively-no-name enclosure via firewire, daisy-chained through my Presonus Firebox external audio unit (I know, not ideal for recording). The MacBook's HDD also has an NTFS partition with XP residing there. Now, it all worked great for a month now, but this week I started having a strange issue. First I noticed that the fans started kicking in even though I wasn't doing anything special. I fired the Activity Monitor up, and indeed, the CPU load was at 140%. So I looked among the processes, and one named "Mass Storage" seemed to be frozen. The obvious, but perhaps a little dangerous, thing to do was to quit it, so I did.
The CPU load returned to normal, and I was still able to access the external drive just fine. So, now, whenever I connect the firewire drive, the mass storage process hangs. I quit it, and everything goes back to normal from there. The question is.. Why does it freeze, and also, what is the whole point of the 'mass storage' process if quitting it doesn't affect anything? When I plug the drive in, iPhoto launches automatically, and by the files that mass storage opens, I'm going to try and track down what's causing it to hang. The last file it opens on the list is /dev/urandom. Also, now that I think about it, FAT32 probably isn't the best filesystem out there. I do need the drive to be compatible with both OS X and Windows though. I suppose I could try HFS+ under OS X, and then using Mac Drive under Win to access the disk.
I'm basically looking for a program like WGet to save a lot of webpages. I want to be able to point it at a site and have it save all the pages for offline use. Is there a way to this that doesn't require me going to each site and saving it for offline?

I am in the process of making digital copies of all my music, movies, and photos. Obviously this is quite a memory hog. What is the best way to have all the files in one central location, and backed up. I would like the files also though to be wirelessly accessible. Is that feasible? Is there a way to have files on a remote computer, but show up in your aperture library/itunes library/ plex database etc?
How do I get my Canon Powershot SD400 to show up as a plain-old USB SD card reader in Leopard?
I'm trying to use PhotoRec to recover some deleted photos off of a SD card. While programs like Image Capture can read and copy pictures from the Camera directly, I need the camera to show up as a plain USB SD card so that I can access it from Photo Rec.
I will be creating a weekly newsletter for an elementary school & need to mass email it to about 500 recipients. Can I do that directly from Pages or do I need some sort of service to do it for me (like where people subscribe to receive it)? Also, should I convert it to PDF?

I'm in Mail and my trash has about 80 deleted messages. I cannot figure out how to do a mass delete. Please don't tell me this has to be done one delete at a time. I've tried a few key strokes and mouse/key combinations, but obviously not the right ones. Now, this is not in MAILBOXES, where a right click and Erase Deleted Items does the job. This is under my 'GMAIL' box, which is linked to MAIL. I can right click--erase deleted items there until I am blue in the face to no avail.

I'm having big problems with USB mass storages. After upgrading to Mavericks my Mac doesn't see some USB storage devices (mostly USB sticks and Android phone's memory cards via USB. My external USB 3.0 hard disks work fine) at all even though the devices themselves (for example my Android phone) are clearly recognized according to the System Report. When I plug them in, they don't show up on my Finder or on Disk Utility.
I've searched everywhere and it seems like some other people are having the same problem, none seems to offer a definite solution. I've even formatted my HD and reinstalled Mavericks from the recovery partition. Now it mounts a USB stick that was in one of the USB ports at the time of installation but still doesn't read anything else! The funny thing is when I boot into Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition, I can mount any USB devices including the USB stick and the Android phone I'm having problems on Mavericks without any problems. I can even see then when I boot into the recovery so there's clearly something wrong with Mavericks.
I've noticed that finder, automatically saves unnecessary spam images and mixes them in with my important images, is there someway of either adding a spam label, to them, so they end up in another folder, or completely stopping the saving process entirely?

I have recently changed all my movie files on my Snow Leopard system to be launchable by QuickTime Player 7 instead of QuickTime Player X [see note below]. For various historical reasons, these movie files have a variety of icons associated with them. I'd like to run some sort of utility which does a mass change of the icons of all my movies to the same, one, single icon ... and I'd like to do this in one fell swoop, instead of having to go through an icon change procedure movie by movie by movie by movie by movie by movie by movie by movie ...
After changing all my movies to be launchable by QT 7, I have restarted Finder and restarted my machine, but the old icons remain on all of the movies.
Is there any way that I can perform this mass icon change under Snow Leopard, or am I out of luck?
I have just updated all of my friends birthdays in iCal. I would like to set it up so that it alerts me 7 days before the date for every birthday. I don't really fancy doing this 60 times, is there anyway to do all of them at once?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have searched around and have not been able to find an answer to my problem. I am having a very tough time trying to rename files/ folders on my late 2008 Unibody MB. This has always happened with this computer since the day I purchased it. When I am trying to rename a file or folder, I hit the return key so I can edit the name on the file. I then try to either backspace or click and drag the selected text that I want to delete. 9 out of 10 times it stops me from doing it mid deleting or adding text. It's like someone it pressing the return key as I am in the middle of editing the text. I am sure I am not pressing the trackpad or enter key accidentally. This is really getting on my nerves and I am about to throw this computer at a wall if I cannot get this fixed.
It's always allows me a different amount of time to edit before it saves it automatically. I am trying to rename over 1000 files on external/ internal hard drives so I can get the correct name for movies in plex/ iphoto. I know I can go into Get Info and edit the name in there, but that would take forever renaming a thousand files. It literally takes me 5 to 10 times just to rename one file. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this problem? I have also tried using the Apple BT keyboard and have the exact same results.
Also completely random question, is there a way to disable the IR port on the MB so when I am controlling the Mac Min HTPC it doesn't keep messing with the MB by bringing up Frontrow, pausing/playing tracks? I literally have to cover the IR port with my finger just so I can use the remote on the mini.

I have recently replaced my hard drive with a Solid State Drive on my 2011 MacBook Pro. The drive is now called untitled instead of "Macintosh HD". I would like to switch it back to "Macintosh HD", but I do not know how to. My MacBook Pro does not have the drive icon on the desktop like the iMac, so sadly, that does not work. How I could change the name of my new hard drive?

I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.

Do a google/bing for either "Safari Reader Nuclear" or "Safari Reader Mass Destruction" and see what you come up with.
View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I had to re-format my external hard drive so that it could be "recordable" within Pro Tools, which wasn't a major issue, I just had to move everything from my Lacie drive to another drive, do the format, and then throw it all back on. It took a little while but this also included moving my nearly 60gb itunes library. Now that it is on the newly formatted hard drive, itunes doesn't seem to be able to find the majority of the songs any more. I've tried changing the music folder and a few other things, and there is no way I'm going through and doing the "cant find music - click here to find it" palava. Is anyone aware of a way that you can "mass find" all of the music in any way other than starting the library again and adding all the music (I don't really want to lose all of my play counts and ratings if possible!)

Even though I am logged in as Administrator it will not allow me to rename folders or to delete some files. When trying to rename a folder, for example, it displays, " You do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item."
I have run the Disk Utility to repair permissions but with no improvement.
When I Get Info on the folder, it says I have Read and Write permissions but I cannot change the name in the Get Info box, either.
This might sound like a stupid question, but is there a way to rename Preview??
View 23 Replies View RelatedThis is strange. All of a sudden I am unable to rename a Folder from untitled folder to anything. I can highlight it, but nothing happens when I try to type in a new title. I tried it on the Desktop and Finder. Any ideas? It would be prety hard to find anything if everything was in folders titled 'untitled'.
