MacBook Pro :: How To Delete Files Before Selling It
Mar 20, 2012
I'm selling my old Macbook Pro. I've gone through and deleted all the files, keychains, etc. I then created a new user account, logged into it, and deleted the old one. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure it's safe to sell?
I'm selling my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo in a week without restoring it. What should I delete before I hand over the computer. i don't want ANY of my personal files on there.
(I know the basics already: movies, photos, music, passwords, documents)
So I buy a MacBook Pro 13 (super local deal) and my second post here is how to sell it! (I'm thinking about selling or returing it and getting the 15.) I have not done anything but the usuall new computer stuff that you walk through up when you turn it on for the first time and downloading Open Office to try it out. What is the best way to clear any data and reset it to factory spec so I don't leave any information?
I am considering the possibility of selling my iMac to fund a retina MacBook. The screen really won me over when playing with it in an Apple Store. My iMac specs are as follows: 27-INCH, Mid 2010 Processor 3.6 GHz Intel Core i5Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3Graphics ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD It is in flawless and mint condition. I am hoping to get enough to fund the Retina MacBook (around £1500), as I get HE discount. I have a 24" Apple Cinema display I can connect the Retina MacBook to. I will use it only as my home workstation, as I already own a 13" MacBook air. So my Question(s) are as follows: 1) Will the MacBook match the power of my current iMac (I like to edit photos, play some music, play WoW) 2) Is this move worth it, or silly? 3) How will the 24" display look when connected to the retina? Can I use this external display as an "extension"? 4)?
I am selling the first MAC eer purchased, a Macbook pro. It is backed up useing Time Machine. Before delivering it to the buyer, how do I clear the hard drive of all my files and information?
I recently discovered, after running Disk Inventory X, some really fat files in my Library. I haven't touched them, as I read on another forum that it could be dangerous but is there anything I can do to get rid of them? I thought maybe they were left there after a recent Time Machine backup because I read that happening to someone else in another forum...
I've attached screenshots (I think) of the two biggest files.
I want to sell my imac 21,5 and buy a macbook instead. the problem is i dont know how to just delete everything like on the iphone. When i am finished with resetting ore whatever my mac should turn on like it is a new device.
I've been on the apple site for 30 minutes looking for LCD monitors. All I see are those god awful super shiny LEDs for sale. Fill me on the news flash I must have missed or shoot me a link!
I'm still relatively new to the mac world of things so I was wondering how you format a mac? I've never done it before...I've only formatted a PC before. At work we have to sell one of our Macs so we want to format everything off it for security purposes before we sell it off.
I'd think with SL not supporting PPC, they'd continue to offer Leopard. But it's not in their online store at all. I guess the number of people using PPC that still aren't running Leopard but would eventually want to buy it is pretty low, so I'd understand them not selling it in-store. But you'd think it would at least be online.
I have a mid-2007 20" iMac, 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB memory, and it runs Lion.I understand I will have to reboot the computer with Snow Leopard, since Lion is non-transferrable, but do I do this after I've deauthorized iTunes and done a 35-pass wipe of the hard drive? Also, do you recommend that I add biogradable peanuts to the inside of the box (I have the original) before shipping it, or are the Apple-provided styrofoam bumpers that fit on each corner sufficient? It's going USPS to a military base overseas.
I can't delete files from my MacBook. When i move the files to trash, they disapaer. But they do NOT end up in the trash can and they still take up space on the hard drive. What to do?
Info:MacBook (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
I played sims 3 and took loads and loads of screenshots (over 800!) and now I want to delete the files all at once. I know how to delete the files individually (dunno if thats how you spell it) but I'm wondering if it's possible to delete them all at once.
I have tried moving them to the trash, as well as using the move to trash button. They seam to go to the trash can but when I delete the trash they are still in the file. I am trying to clear out some old files so that I can have room on my start up disk. My Disk is full and it is making it hard for me to open more then one file. I am getting an external hard drive soon but don't want these files on it.
I had ipod touch, i sold it and i will only use ipad + nokia phone + computer.
Most ipod apps are small, they are HD versions very soon. If I keep my itune account and buy ipad apps, most of my ipod apps will be wasted.
I have no music, video...only apps, and they are worth like over 450$. I think if I try to sell that, i may have 50$ at least, I only picked useful, famous apps and games. It's not a big deal, but not a waste. Someone can still use my account and save hundreds of $ buying on their own. Change info and add a card, then the account will work again.
What is the best way to completely erase everything on the computer so that it is not in the RAM or temporary memory anymore? I was looking at bikini models and I was redirected to another porn site. It popped up a bunch of other sites too. I would like to get rid of this and start over with this computer.
I'm trying to delete several files (one, an application; the other, an Excel file) but whenever I move them to the trash, I get an error message. The Application (Skype) error says I have to unlock the file, but after I unlock it (using File->Get Info) and I type in the administrator password, it gets me back to the beginning and I have to do the whole thing over and over again.
When I try to delete Excel file, i get a dialogue box that says "The operation can't be completed because the item NY alumni list.xls is in use." But the file is only being used by me; even after I make a small change and resave it and then try to delete it, i get the same error message repeatedly.
I have tried two apps that detect and delete duplicate files. Both will find duplicate files of all types, and then fail to delete them. I tried first with "Duplicate Detective" and thought it must be the application's fault; then I tried "The Duplicate Finder" and received the following message:Â
Failed to delete files
Please check their permission for removal. Â
Support the Duplicate Detective app reviewed my console logs and said that my computer from removing files in Users/"my name"/folder.Â
I tried repairing disk permissions through the disk utility and that didn't work. Â
Info: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
I'm selling one of my MacBooks on craigslist. What's the best way way to wipe the computer, making it almost new? My snow leopard disk belonged to a friend so I no longer can do that. Is there a best way to manually delete all my files, pics, etc
I'm a newbie in mac, I used to have macbook white now I ordered MBPI'm concerned in transferring my data to the new machine can o set the migration assistant to transfer specific documents e.g only mail accounts and iphoto library without other clutters I have on my old machine??

I am an art student and my computer only has 70 gb of space left and is running pretty slow. Is it possible to delete all my files on my laptop because everything is backed up on my external hard drive?
I want to delete backup files that are more than a year old from my time machine. I moved them to trash and although it then asks if I want to remove secure items and I check yes, it then stops. As a result I can't securely delete any new files either since each time the same thing happens if I add a new file, none of it deletes.Â
On new MBP, i keep getting asked for password to delete files, but not to empty the trash. Checked permission and all looks okay. Permission on .Trash is mine not anyone else.Â
I've already deleted the user and clicked "Delete Immediately" to remove the user account and all the user's files, but a lot of their files and applications still show up in my Finder (and take up tons of storage space). Is there a way to permanently delete all of the old stuff?
