I can't delete files from my MacBook. When i move the files to trash, they disapaer. But they do NOT end up in the trash can and they still take up space on the hard drive. What to do?

I recently discovered, after running Disk Inventory X, some really fat files in my Library. I haven't touched them, as I read on another forum that it could be dangerous but is there anything I can do to get rid of them? I thought maybe they were left there after a recent Time Machine backup because I read that happening to someone else in another forum...
I've attached screenshots (I think) of the two biggest files.
I played sims 3 and took loads and loads of screenshots (over 800!) and now I want to delete the files all at once. I know how to delete the files individually (dunno if thats how you spell it) but I'm wondering if it's possible to delete them all at once.

I am trying to clear out some old files so that I can have room on my start up disk. My Disk is full and it is making it hard for me to open more then one file. I am getting an external hard drive soon but don't want these files on it.

I'm trying to delete several files (one, an application; the other, an Excel file) but whenever I move them to the trash, I get an error message. The Application (Skype) error says I have to unlock the file, but after I unlock it (using File->Get Info) and I type in the administrator password, it gets me back to the beginning and I have to do the whole thing over and over again.
When I try to delete Excel file, i get a dialogue box that says "The operation can't be completed because the item NY alumni list.xls is in use." But the file is only being used by me; even after I make a small change and resave it and then try to delete it, i get the same error message repeatedly.

I have tried two apps that detect and delete duplicate files. Both will find duplicate files of all types, and then fail to delete them. I tried first with "Duplicate Detective" and thought it must be the application's fault; then I tried "The Duplicate Finder" and received the following message:Â

Please check their permission for removal. Â
Support the Duplicate Detective app reviewed my console logs and said that my computer from removing files in Users/"my name"/folder.Â
I tried repairing disk permissions through the disk utility and that didn't work. Â

I placed the folder on my desktop and the problem is that, now I can't delete these copied files. When i try to delete them Mac asks for a admin password, I type the password but nothing happens the files haven't moved. I have set permission to read & write for all users. View 11 Replies View RelatedBasically I just got myself the latest MacBook as an upgrade from an old laptop. With my old laptop I had no problems what so ever when using my external hard drive. To delete any files I didn't want I would just right click and press the delete option. However, when connected to my new Mac, there is no such option when right clicking on a file. I've tried dragging the file to a recycling bin but I get a message from the finder saying this file can't be deleted. I've tried moving the file out of my hard drive which worked and then deleting it which was fine but the file remained in the external hard drive as I'd only created a copy. I can't figure out how to delete files I don't want. Deleting everything on the hard drive is out of the question.

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. MS Excel put two files on my desktop that cannot be opened, moved or trashed. They are not files I created, and are identified by a random series of 8 letters/numbers. When I try to open or move them there's simply no response. When I try to trash them I get the message: "The item 'xxxxxxxx' can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted." I had this same problem a couple years ago and I called Apple Care and they walked me through how to delete the files. Now my Apple Care is expired and I'd rather not pay $50 to resolve a rather simple problem. It's just that I can't recall the procedure for deleting these files. how to get these files off the desktop?Â

I'm a relatively new Mac user (Macbook Pro 15). Can anyone tell me hwo to delete files from an external drive WITHOUT having to empty the entire trash bin.
