MacBook :: What Files Can Be Delete Using Onyx
Dec 13, 2010I'm new to Macbooks and was wondering what I am allowed to delete while using Onyx.

View 5 RepliesI recently discovered, after running Disk Inventory X, some really fat files in my Library. I haven't touched them, as I read on another forum that it could be dangerous but is there anything I can do to get rid of them? I thought maybe they were left there after a recent Time Machine backup because I read that happening to someone else in another forum...
I've attached screenshots (I think) of the two biggest files.
I was researching the best way to clean up my mac and I came across onyx. I have over 16 gb which is full of "other" data and don't know how to get rid of it. So I came across onyx is it safe to download?

I am trying to figure out how to properly use Onyx and it just seems daunting to use - because of my unfamiliarity with OSX...and the terms used.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an OnyX program to clean and maintain my Mac. This was recommended by the Geek Squad. Is this safe for my Mac and is there a better program for this purpose? I was previously using Mac Keeper.

After I executed automation and default clean up function with Onyx. After reboot Finder doesn't open anymore on the menu bar there are only three options: finder, files, help. I have to click on the finder menu and choose run full finder to get it back to work.
Launchpad simply doesn't show anything anymore
spotlight just disappeared...
Im able to create a new account and everything works fine. I have keychain in the current account so it will be better if I can fix this.

I can't delete files from my MacBook. When i move the files to trash, they disapaer. But they do NOT end up in the trash can and they still take up space on the hard drive. What to do?

I played sims 3 and took loads and loads of screenshots (over 800!) and now I want to delete the files all at once. I know how to delete the files individually (dunno if thats how you spell it) but I'm wondering if it's possible to delete them all at once.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried moving them to the trash, as well as using the move to trash button. They seam to go to the trash can but when I delete the trash they are still in the file. I am trying to clear out some old files so that I can have room on my start up disk. My Disk is full and it is making it hard for me to open more then one file. I am getting an external hard drive soon but don't want these files on it.

What is the best way to completely erase everything on the computer so that it is not in the RAM or temporary memory anymore? I was looking at bikini models and I was redirected to another porn site. It popped up a bunch of other sites too. I would like to get rid of this and start over with this computer.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm selling my old Macbook Pro. I've gone through and deleted all the files, keychains, etc. I then created a new user account, logged into it, and deleted the old one. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure it's safe to sell?

I'm trying to delete several files (one, an application; the other, an Excel file) but whenever I move them to the trash, I get an error message. The Application (Skype) error says I have to unlock the file, but after I unlock it (using File->Get Info) and I type in the administrator password, it gets me back to the beginning and I have to do the whole thing over and over again.
When I try to delete Excel file, i get a dialogue box that says "The operation can't be completed because the item NY alumni list.xls is in use." But the file is only being used by me; even after I make a small change and resave it and then try to delete it, i get the same error message repeatedly.

I have tried two apps that detect and delete duplicate files. Both will find duplicate files of all types, and then fail to delete them. I tried first with "Duplicate Detective" and thought it must be the application's fault; then I tried "The Duplicate Finder" and received the following message:
Failed to delete files
Please check their permission for removal.
Support the Duplicate Detective app reviewed my console logs and said that my computer from removing files in Users/"my name"/folder.
I tried repairing disk permissions through the disk utility and that didn't work.

I want to delete backup files that are more than a year old from my time machine. I moved them to trash and although it then asks if I want to remove secure items and I check yes, it then stops. As a result I can't securely delete any new files either since each time the same thing happens if I add a new file, none of it deletes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe reason I'm asking this is simple: Since I installed OSX it started up so damn fast. Recently a month after (I guess monthly scripts were executed) my start up became slower. I enter my password, after a few seconds I see background, then top apple bar, a few seconds later dock and then all the apps start to load in the top right corner. Why is this happening?

I just want to make sure my mac is optimized and running well. No problems yet, but i thought it might be time, as it's been over a year since i did anything but use it.
My beloved onyx says not compatible with 10.6.
