MacBook Pro :: How To Share CD Drive
Sep 2, 2010I'm trying to install Office 2010 on a friends PC, but they've got a CD, NOT DVD drive. Can I somehow (Using software or not) connect my Mac to the PC, and use my Macs DVD Drive?

I see in the video they use a WIN BOX.
Recently I made the switch to a MBP and wanted to add a HFS+ formated drive to my NAS "ethernet connection" (desktop PC converted to NAS device running XP). From my searches I was pointed to Macdrive 7 and successfully formated my new drive to HFS+, however I can't figure out how to share the drive on my network. I have also tried using freenas to share the drive, but can't figure out how to share the HFS+ formated drive.

I've got a 1TB WD External Drive used to store all my media, and I figured sharing that drive between the Mini and my Blackbook would be a cinch. WAY not the case. Both computers are running 10.5, fully updated.
These are the steps that I thought it would involve:
- Connecting the Drive to the Mini
- Turning on File Sharing
- Adding the specific folders on the Drive I want shared, and setting permissions accordingly
(Don't know if its relevant (or a stupid idea regardless), but I have the same user name and password setup on both of these machines as the admin)
- Connecting to the Mini in Finder on the Blackbook..............
I have 3 computers at home: pc, IMac and Macbook air. The IMac has 2 external drives attached: one by FW800, formated as HFS+, and another by usb, formatted as NTFS. This was the usb drive attached to the pc, it contains all my media, and I used it as a server to access multimedia files on wireless lan. I now have it connected to the IMac, as the pc is now seldom used
Problem is, my Macbook air can't see this usb shared drive on IMac and I can't figure out why, either as guest or as registered user with admin permissions. The fw800 external disk is seen.
We have a Mac Mini which is our media player. I have all the actual media on an external USB drive. The previous drive was failing, so I've now copied everything over to the new drive. The new drive has the same name as the old drive: Media Drive. As far as the Mac Mini itself goes, all is well.
However, we also access the media drive through filesharing from our other Macs. Now with the new drive, it doesn't appear in filesharing. So I went into filesharing. I removed the old Media Drive (it said it couldn't locate it, because of course it's gone). Then I added the new Media Drive. Still it doesn't appear in filesharing.
Info:Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
so here is my question/dilemma. I had a server running in RAID0 that had a drive fail so I lost everything. I will be using a large portion of the storage simply to hold media to stream to my TV, so having one large filesystem doesn't give me any benefits. Should I just set up the mac pro with every drive having its own share or should i RAID0 my drives? Im leaning towards a JBOD solution but someone more experienced may be able to give me a better point of view.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt has taken me a little bit to understand how this Time Capsule works. I don't mean the easy Time Machine, backup-only part. I mean that ideally, I'd like to repartition the 1TB hard drive that's inside of it and I'd also like to change the partition style from Apple's old(er) AFP which is mainly used in the PowerPC-based Mac's, to GUID, the current "default" style that every Intel-based Mac uses. Using the AirPort utility that came with the Time Capsule, I did configure every last part of the TC, including the hard drive sharing part, which I protected with a "disk password", one of the three choices given by the Manual Setup Guide. What I apparently can't wrap my mind around just yet is as to where exactly do I enter this password? How do I access the drive from a computer on the network? I apologize if some of these questions seem a bit n00b'ish, but I am officially still new to Mac's and I am most certainly brand new(!) to this Time Capsule! lol...I do love it, though. Some of the config settings are indeed very well thought out.

I recently got an imac, and I am new to the the mac world but decided I loved my iphone how bad could a mac be? My husband and I each have our computer he has a PC & I have a mac and a PC laptop. We bought an external hardrive to dump all my many many pictures on it.The idea is we will not save anything on our computers but instead work off of the hard drive that is automatically backed up.Ok now that you know the back ground. How can I view pictures from the external hardrive in iphoto with out haveing to make an iphoto library on my external hardrive.I would not mind putting all my pictures in the iphoto library as long as I could view or manipulate the pictures from a PC, does anyone know if this is a possibility? I have asked at the one to one sessions that I paid for but they can't help. I guess it also hard for them to help when I can't very well be lugging my desk top in and out of the mac store for help.
Any ideas I really like the iphoto tools and it could be very helpfull, but only if it doesn't limit me to always working from my computer.I have great photo editing software on my laptop and want to be able to access the pictures from my laptp edit save and later view from my mac.I found out how to make iphoto open the iphoto library on my external harddrive but I am asking for more.

I have a G5 Imac and a G4 ibook. i want to use time machine, and have one external hard drive connect to both. I could get an external with more than one input (ie, usb and firewire)--does that work? Could i use a usb hub to connect the 2 computers to the HD, and set up different partitions?
And what of NAS? i do not want to set up a whole network (we already have one at my office, and i want this to be independent).
I have an airport extreme with a 1tb drive connected to it that my entire family connects to (4 people).
I installed the latest AirPort driver that allows the hard drive to be accessed over the internet which works great.
The problem is that it obviously only works with my user account since I linked it with my MobileMe user name. Is there any way to allow my other family members access to the drive over the internet, short of them going into MobileMe in system preferences and logging in as my MobileMe account?
I've found plenty of articles on how to get Time Machine to backup TO a network drive, however I have the opposite problem; I have a Windows machine on my network, with some shared folders, and I'd like to back-up their contents using Time Machine on my Mac since it has plenty of space, without having to copy their contents somewhere first if possible.
However, Time Machine only lets you choose what to exclude, it doesn't let you specify special sources to backup. I was thinking a symbolic link from /Volumes, but I've no idea where to point it to. A second relevant question as well would be; how do I get OS X to automatically connect to a Windows share when it's available? The Windows machine isn't always on when I start up my Mac, but I don't want to have to manually connect all the time
It would also be useful to have things such as my calendar, address book and iphotos shared between my machines too.
I'm just wondering what people think is the best way to do this and whether there are any cool applications out there which could make this integration easier.
