MacBook Pro :: Finding Internal Temp Difference (lid Open Versus Lid Closed)?

Sep 4, 2009

I was considering picking up this stand for my uMBP:

One thing that concerned me was having higher CPU temps with the lid closed.

I read a thread a few days ago that said there is no CPU temp change between lid closed and lid opened. And after doing some of my own testing I now believe that information is FALSE.

I use smcFanControl to control fan speed and monitor CPU temp.

Before using smcFantControl to boost my fan speed to constantly run at 3,400RPM, my CPU temp was 10-20 degrees (celsius) higher, on average.

I listened to a few U2 songs encoded with AAC and Apple Lossless. Listening through the standard ipod ear buds, I honestly could not tell the difference.

Has anyone been able to notice a discernible improvement with Lossless? If so, what type of music/speakers were you using?

MacBook :: Finding Maximum CPU Temp - How Many Fans Necessary

Jul 24, 2009

I have a fan utility that lists 2 fans. The "Left" fan is at 6204 rpm's, temp 81.4C The "Right" fan shows 0rpm's, temp -1C. Is this merely because the sensor is capable of recording two fan speeds or do I really have one malfunctioning fan? (which would explain the high cpu temp, if it applies).

A third sensor, a widget, records the same temp, with Heatsink A 70C and Heatsink B 64C. I realize all three sensors are getting their readings from the same spot; which one do I rely on?

MacBook Pro :: Difference In Performance Based On File Format NTFS Versus HPS+?

Mar 24, 2012

I've just ordered a MBP 2.4Ghz with 7200rpm 750GB drive, I will be adding either a single 8GB memory stick (total of 10GB) or a 16GB kit.  I'm looking for my first SSD use as a boot drive for OSX and potentially Win 7 in BootCamp and hope I can get some counsel on model selection and configuration. I read that SSDs suffer a performance drop (sometimes significant) as the drive fills up.  Also there are both 256GB and 240GB drives.

1)  Are there models that maintain performance over time?  Is there a specification that indicates how performance drops as the drive fills up?

2)  Is there a performance difference (current / long-term) between 256 and 240GB drives?

3)  Does an abundance of RAM improve performance and / or longevity?

4)  How much space (if any) should be kept free for swap files in OSX / Windows?

5)  With 240 / 256GB SSDs, how much usable space is available after formatting?

6)  Is there a difference in performance based on file format NTFS vs. HPS+?

7)  Do I need to be concerned about major name brands (Intel, Samsung, OCZ, Kingston, etc.) being incompatible with MBPs?

8)  Are some SSDs easier to install / configure / maintain on a MBP than others?

9)  Are there any issues I should be aware of regarding the installation or use of a SSD that would impact my MBP's warranty?

Based on performance, reliability and 5-year warranty, I've been attracted to the Intel 520. I've also read good reports on the Samsung 830.  One review indicated that the 830 maintained performance over time while the 520 experienced a significantly greater drop.

MacBook Pro :: Difference In Free Space On Internal Drive?

May 13, 2012

I'm confused - when I look at my Storage info under the "About This Mac" item, my internal drive shows that it has "141.6 GB free out of 499.25 GB" Yet when I look at a Finder window, the drive shows 230.89 GB available. That's an almost 90 GB difference. I'm assuming (until someone tells me otherwise) that the "About This Mac" information is the 'truest' but I, frankly, don't know.

Mac Pro :: SSD 2.5 Versus 3.5 And Is There A Difference

Oct 13, 2010

I'm looking to finally upgrade my Mac Pro to use an SSD as a boot drive, and I've been eyeing the OCZ Vertex 2 drives as a result of the beloved Sandforce controller. My question is, the only OCZ drives I've been able to find at the price point I want in my area are the Vertex 2 3.5 120 gig editions.

[URL]

Is there any reason NOT to get this over the 2.5 version? I'm not planning on putting it in the optical bay as both are in use, and would just go in a regular hard drive bay. It's unfortunate that I wont one day be able to use it in my Macbook Pro should I ever upgrade however, beyond this am I suffering any penalty by going with the larger size?

MacBook Pro :: Won't Work With Temp / Temp Rise After 10.6.3

Apr 6, 2010

I have a MacBookPro5,4 2.53GHz with one fan and only the 9400M. After updating to 10.6.3 the operating temperature seems to have risen from about 43 degrees C to about 48. It has been getting warmer here in Japan so the ambient temperature is different but I still think this rise in temp. is due to the update. I have smcfancontrol installed and set to 2500rpm instead of the normal 2000, but it seems to be not enough to keep the temp. under control, as it did before the update. Any relatively hard use of the cpu and the temp goes up to 60 degrees.

MacBook :: Whitebook 2.1 Or 2.4 - Finding The Difference?

Jan 13, 2009

I'm going to eventually buy a reburb white Macbook and I am contemplating between the 2.1GHz and the 2.4. As far as the ram and hdd are concerned, I plan on putting a bigger drive in and upping the ram to 4gb, so the only difference left is the .3Ghz.

The money saved by going with a 2.1 would just about cover the 4gb and a good 320GB HDD.

My plans for this laptop are: surfing, some work in Windows (thus the ram), itunes, iweb, iphoto... no gaming planned, I'm just not a gamer.

OS X :: MacBook Lid Won't Stay Closed - Pops Open

Aug 14, 2009

I haz a serial problem, but I'll spare you the plea for sympathy and leave that to my psych. A less serial problem is my 2.4ghz AluMacBook. It's super great funtime, number one! The problem is when I put it in my laptop bag, the lid pops back open! This means pencils or cd's could get inside of the clamshell and damage it! I don't like to have my properties damaged so I'm wondering if there's a way I could re-tension the spring or adjust something soez that it stays shut. No, I'm not complaining about a weak spring, as with the MacBook Pros, I'm complaining about maybe a spastic spring that just can't be subdued. Is there any chance the magnets that hold it shut are weak?

MacBook Pro :: WIFI Network Performance - Lid Closed Vs Open?

Mar 1, 2009

I have a house that is not ideal for wifi. In particular, my office is an extension off the kitchen which has a solid brick wall between it and the rest of the house. Through 2 airport extremes, i get great wireless N signal everywhere in the house except this office. So, i added a 'N' airport express at the base of the stairs to this office and 'extended' the network.

So, i have 2 macbook pros up here. One is running on batteries, sitting on my desk, lid open. It is showing a rate of 108, signal -66 and noise -88 in the advanced wireless clients section of the airport express which it is getting it's signal from.

The next is closed and connected to a LED 24" cinema display. It is right next to the other MBP. It is showing a rate of 41, signal -80 and noise -93.

Why such a huge difference? Would it be because the lid is closed, it is connected to the display or a faulty macbook?

Hardware :: Speed Difference Between Time Capsule Backup Versus Hard Drive To Extreme Connected Via Usb?

For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.

I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.

Is there a noticeable speed difference between time capsule backup vs hard drive to extreme connected via usb?
