The Verify failed when checking the drive at the physical disk level, but the main volumes passed.Is this "normal", i.e. should I just be checking the volumes?

I just tried to verify my HDD, and Disk Utility said: Invalid node structure. Volume check failed. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed. Now when I tried to reboot my Macbook, the gray Apple comes up and so does the spinning wheel, but after a couple of minutes, it shuts down.

I have a very old E Mac running version OS X version 10.1.5. My Mac is showing a flashing question mark so I have tried to repair it using the Install Disk provided with my E Mac. Unfortunately, when I insert my Mac OS X Install disk (which is for version 10.1.4) and press the C key at startup and click on Disk Utility the "Repair Disk" button is greyed out (although I am able to Verify the Disk.) How do I get round this problem? (I should add that I have had the flashing question mark once before, and I was able to repair my E Mac on that occasion as I was able at that time to click on the "Repair Disk" button. However, I can no longer do this.)Â
I have also tried using my OS 9 Install Disk, as I was using OS 9 the last time before the flashing question mark appeared. When I go into Disk Utility using that disk, I am able to click on the "Repair Disk" button but it lists errors that it says it is unable to repair.Â

I have a MacBook and last night it froze for a while, so I manually shut it down. When I tried to turn it on, it went to the white screen with the folder and flashing question mark. I don't know how to fix computers at all, so I looked online and it said to put the disc in. I went to disc utility and it shows the hard drive, but it is not as bright as the install disc.. does that mean it cannot be found? What should I do? I tried to reinstall the disc to my hard drive with the option checked to keep my old settings, etc but it did not work. Most of my stuff is not backed up so if there is any way I can try to save it before I try to reload the hard drive would be really great.

I try to insert my hard drive and it says "the disk inserted is not readeable by this computer" but when I open disk utility to repair it says "First Aid failed, Error: filesystem verify or repair failed". I am very frustrated, my work is due next week and most of it is in the drive.

I have a WD Terabyte drive that I have used for over a year with no problems. A couple of days ago my roommate went to use it and disconnected the drive from my computer without ejecting it first. He used it with his PC and disconnected it without "safely removing" it from his computer and now it will not mount to my desktop of been seen by PC. Disk Utility sees the device but I get an error when I try to repair the disk or verify the disk. It gives me an "error on exit" message. I really need the 700GB of info on that drive. Don't know what to do next.

I was just wondering what is the difference between the two options "Verify Disk" and Verify Disk Permissions"- what exactly do each of them do? I've ran all the verification tests on each hard drive I have and repaired them when needed. So far it has only been my external WD hard drive that needed to have a repair, though I didn't notice anything wrong with it prior to running the verification test. I've been having problems with iCal and would like to reinstall it using Utilities Disc 1 with the Superdrive. However, there only appears to be an option to reinstall ALL the bundled software, at which point I've aborted the reinstallation process. Sledgehammer to crack a nut! It's only iCal I'm having trouble with (e.g searches not clearing down, "today" button greys out.) If it's not possible to reinstall just iCal from disc, does anyone know a way to "repair or mend" a malfunctioning iCal?

My Power Mac froze, and won't boot. I'm running 10.4. No recent changes, downloads, or updates. Safe mode won't work. freezes on grey start up screen. System CD in drive, won't boot from holding down "c" held down option and selected CD and finally got to disk utility.
Now, when I try to run utility to repair permissions, I get an error stating "disk utility has lost its connection with the disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility" happens over and over.
When I try to repair disk, I get a red line saying "reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect date, keys out of order. The volume could not be repaired". Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972). 1 volume could not be repaired.

The error called "Filesystem verify or repair failed" appeared with the following information: invalid volume count / invalid directory count. This volume needs to be repaired.

I ran a disk check on my MacBook Pro which told me to run disk repair. Since this was my boot HD, I took out my Installation DVD, put it into the running system and started the installation file then selected that I wanted to reboot and start utilities. While trying to pepair permissions systom freeze up. So I put in the startup disk hit restrat holding down c and tried to repair permissions that way and it froze up that way too. I had to manually turn off machine.

View 7 Replies View RelatedRight, I just upgraded the Hard Drive in my white Macbook today. So I put a fresh install of OSX on and put all my pictures, music, apps etc back on. After I had done everything I decided to check the permissions and repair any if needed. As it was verifying the permissions loads came up that needed repaired. So when i clicked repair it all seemed to go fine, it doesn't say any couldn't be fixed or nothing. But I went to verify them again just to double check and they were all still there needed repaired again.

I ran my usual check on the mac drive via "Verify Disk" option. It came up with "needs repair"...etc., and told me to repair it. I did a command r during boot so I could do a repair, and the software told me "your mac drive seems to be ok"??? Some kind of glitch, or need I worry about it at all?

Yesterday I noticed that my computer had been trying to complete a backup for quite awhile... Well it turns out that it was only a 382KB backup and it was taking hours. I tried clicking "Stop backing up" and nothing happened. The drive was in a repetitious clicking rhythm, and when I tried to eject it, Finder said it was in use. I put my 10.5.2 install disk in and ran Disk Utility. I have two partitions on that drive, Beta and Charlie. Beta verified and repaired without a glitch, but my time machine partition, Charlie, said "Invalid node structure, volume check failed." Also, disk utility was unable to calculate how much space remained on that partition.
