Where do you sit on the whole Genie Effect vs Scale Effect war that's been raging for the last 8 years? Whilst the Genie wowed me the first time I saw it, I chose Scale Effect pretty much as soon as I got OSX, preferring performance over prettiness. Now, years later, when I occasionally catch it on other peeps machines I think it just looks... tacky. I wonder how many people on here still have it switched on?

I have inadvertently left my 2011 MBP running with a processor intensive music app running. The battery ran out before i realised.. When i attached the power lead to charge it, the computer automatically restarted without even pressing the power button. The computer had not entered safe sleep mode, presumably because my music software was still running.
Since then the computer will not ever enter safe sleep when the power runs down. The battery just cuts out each time when it drops to less than 5%, it does not run out at 0% like it usually does. if it is the logic board battery because i have had this issue a couple of times before but it rectified itself after a few days. I have checked that safe sleep is enabled which it is, but the computer just cuts out before safe sleep kicks in.

I was wondering if it was safe to leave my macbook on while i sleep to download big things that can take up to a few hours to download?
Should I leave it hooked to a power supply or running off it's own battery?
While i'm at it: Is it safe to leave my macbook on the power supply anytime im at home, or does that kill the battery faster?
So when I scroll pages of text, there is a very disturbing shift in the text as it passes certain areas of the screen. I notice it from about the middle to the top third. It's a bit disturbing, and I'm wondering what it is and whether it's a defect that I should have looked at.

I have a 13" MBA, and a Moshi clearguard skin.. I'm a first time Mac switcher so I didn't know if this was common. I do 900miles of research before every purchase, even been lurking around this forum for ages now, but I never read about anything like this - only that keyboard skins may or may not make it run warmer.

As you can see from the info at the bottom of the post, I own the 2008 model. Now, with my hardware slowly becoming obsolete and the wear starting to show its effects, I would have to get a new laptop in the near future. However, as I discovered, all new models have batteries that cannot be removed. After 2 years of service my battery swelled and had to be replaced. That's 2 years. With a new battery, my laptop's life has been prolonged.
How long will a new laptop last? Will I really have to buy a brand new expensive computer every two years just because of a design flaw?

A converter like this one states that it only supports 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 display modes. If the converter is outputting a 1024x768 then I guess I'm going to have to stretch the screen and thus I will loose some quality, right?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm in England currently (From the USA) and am using a "DYNEX" converter adapter to switch the electric current down so I can plug in/charge my Macbook Pro and iPad. It works, however the charger buzzes pretty loudly and gets hot. I brought two, one started smelling like melted plastic and stopped charging altogether. That particular charger has faulted at home before (back in the USA), so I'm not sure if it died because of the converter or because it's just faulty.
I have plugged in the newer charger and it also buzzes, but I'm really worried to keep it plugged in because I don't want it to fault out too. Is it normal for it to buzz like that when plugged into a converter adapter?

I'm not sure this is even possible, but don't know why it wouldn't be because you can stream HD content over the internet using cat5. And a long cat5 cable is a lot cheaper than hdmi cables and extenders.
