MacBook Air :: Coolbook Has No Effect?
Sep 11, 2008
Now I have these settings with coolbook:
But there is just no difference in temperature or fan speed. Now iTunes, Firefox, Adium and Coolbook are open but as soon as I start to load some Webpages (Engadget, Spiegel.de, etc...) the fan runs a lot faster and thy CPU has about 55C.

Where do you sit on the whole Genie Effect vs Scale Effect war that's been raging for the last 8 years? Whilst the Genie wowed me the first time I saw it, I chose Scale Effect pretty much as soon as I got OSX, preferring performance over prettiness. Now, years later, when I occasionally catch it on other peeps machines I think it just looks... tacky. I wonder how many people on here still have it switched on?

I have read a few isolated postings about people with Rev B using CoolBook.
If you do that what is the extra battery time you get from your MBA Rev B with CoolBook installed?

I saw a single post somewhere on these boards about something called "coolbook" which is a utility that undervoltages (is that even a word?) the chip to make it run cooler.
It's $10 to give it a try. Wonder if anyone with fan issues would give this a try to see if it changes the heat/fans much?
Google coolbook and you will find it.

So, software update today addressing the core shutdown issue.
I turned off Coolbook (uncheck "Coolbook Active"), rebooted, installed the update, rebooted, turned Coolbook back on and rebooted. By now, my machine was pretty warm, so I put it to sleep for a couple minutes.
Then I ran 10 minutes of Youtube videos. My max temp was 66 degrees. My fans stayed low for the first couple of videos, then slowly crept up to 4500 RPM over the course of the third video. I think they would eventually reach max fans, but it looked like another 10 minutes or so to get there.
Compared to before, the fans definitely came up much more slowly, so that's good. Otherwise, everything seemed to run normally for me.
Environmentally, the ambient temperature in the room is about 75 and I have the machine on my lap (so some of the vents are blocked).
In my opinion, the update looks good. Despite the warning in the update, Coolbook still works fine and still provides a superior heat management technique (by generating less heat in the first place).

I've just installed coolbook and fiddled around withe the settings etc, and restarted.Do I need to open coolbook every time I restart the MBA?Do I need to have the application running all the time, or do I just leave itclosed? (i guess if the answer the question 1 is no, then the answer to this is no as well!)Finally, is there a way of keeping the icon in the menu bar without having the actualy application open (assuming you don't need it open all the time)? I like seeing what temp it's currently at

I'm asking good settings for my MacBook 2,2Ghz Core Duo & 4Gb RAM.
How many different speed i should use?
I mean like this,
Quote:
800 mhz at .9V
1200 mhz at .9V
1400 mhz at .9V
1600 mhz at .95
Many different settings, or just 2, etc?

I run 2 instances of yes > /dev/null in the terminal windows and the coolbook temperature rises to 100 degrees Celsius. In istat pro its 105 degrees Celsius for the cpu? And of course its downclocking to 1200mhz. If I use the lowest voltage in coolbook the temperature will reach 92 degrees celcius, still really high. I'm only stressing the CPU, wonder what happens when I also stress the GPU. It seems the air is really not capable of this 'high-end' processor and gpu, I wonder if the rev2 of the air will be any better.

I just bought coolbook for my two and a half year old White Macbook. What would be the best settings/courses of action to keep my book from overheating and be able to comfortably play streaming vid. on a 23" monitor?
Don't know if that last part really makes a huge difference.

Coolbook doesn't work after updating from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2. When I open it, it says "This update requires a reboot" no matter how many times I reboot. I can't use it, and I also can't uninstall the driver to reinstall it and see if that corrects it. When I try to uninstall it through the preferences pane, it says "failed to uninstall Coolbook."

I've been considering buying a MBP for a while now but have ultimately decided to wait until the next refresh, which i presume will be in time for christmas or very early 2010?Reason being I was bought a 24" iMac for my birthday in August and am obviously about to be slightly stung by the updated version of the all in one being released a mere 2 months or so later, so decided to wait till the next MBP update before buying my first notebook to maximize its longevity (hopefully). My question though is, as MBP and iMac specs are currently relatively similar and both are considered the slightly more high end "everyday consumer option" (low end being MacBook and Mac Mini)...Could the spec of the updated iMac be all but the same as the new MBP when they are released? i know we as consumers can never "know" but it could be logical to assume if iMac's get quad core and blu-ray then MBP could be in for similar treatment.

I have inadvertently left my 2011 MBP running with a processor intensive music app running. The battery ran out before i realised.. When i attached the power lead to charge it, the computer automatically restarted without even pressing the power button. The computer had not entered safe sleep mode, presumably because my music software was still running.
Since then the computer will not ever enter safe sleep when the power runs down. The battery just cuts out each time when it drops to less than 5%, it does not run out at 0% like it usually does. if it is the logic board battery because i have had this issue a couple of times before but it rectified itself after a few days. I have checked that safe sleep is enabled which it is, but the computer just cuts out before safe sleep kicks in.

I was wondering if it was safe to leave my macbook on while i sleep to download big things that can take up to a few hours to download?
Should I leave it hooked to a power supply or running off it's own battery?
While i'm at it: Is it safe to leave my macbook on the power supply anytime im at home, or does that kill the battery faster?

So when I scroll pages of text, there is a very disturbing shift in the text as it passes certain areas of the screen. I notice it from about the middle to the top third. It's a bit disturbing, and I'm wondering what it is and whether it's a defect that I should have looked at.

Has anyone noticed that with a keyboard skin, the sound is much worse (muted, no treble) on the MBA? Is this common to all Macs or is it only on the MBA? Is the keyboard the, y'know, vent or something for the speakers?
I have a 13" MBA, and a Moshi clearguard skin.. I'm a first time Mac switcher so I didn't know if this was common. I do 900miles of research before every purchase, even been lurking around this forum for ages now, but I never read about anything like this - only that keyboard skins may or may not make it run warmer.

As you can see from the info at the bottom of the post, I own the 2008 model. Now, with my hardware slowly becoming obsolete and the wear starting to show its effects, I would have to get a new laptop in the near future. However, as I discovered, all new models have batteries that cannot be removed. After 2 years of service my battery swelled and had to be replaced. That's 2 years. With a new battery, my laptop's life has been prolonged.
How long will a new laptop last? Will I really have to buy a brand new expensive computer every two years just because of a design flaw?

My new MacBook Pro runs perfectly. However, it makes the "funk" alert sound effect on a random basis and it is getting pretty annoying. Why is this happening? I am apparently not the only user experiencing this issue, but they did not identify the sound as being one of the built-in sounds.
