I just bought a brand new i5 quad core iMac. I installed Starcraft, and I have to crank the settings down in order to get a decent frame rate, so I thought I'd give Bootcamp a go.
I installed Win7 64bit and then installed the drivers from the DVD which came with it. I started up the Starcraft 2 installer and 8 HOURS LATER, it was still at only 60%.
Steam also seems to have issues, it will halt with a "This program is no longer responding" window, and then randomly spring back to life a few seconds later.
The system also feels really sluggish. I've not been able to benchmark anything on it to see if the system is really slow, or if it's just my perception as all the modern games I have are in my steam account.
For some reason when I shutdown, Windows also seems to hang on "Shutting down". It does not exhibit the same behaviour when I launch the boot camp partition through VMWare.
I'm running W7 ultimate on a Rev. A MBA. I'm looking for some tips on improving performance in Bootcamp.
Here is what I have done so far:
- Installed latest BC drivers (3.1)
- Defragged windows partition
- Disabled hibernate function (to save HDD space)
- Installed all updates from Windows Update
- Disabled (some) of the Aero eye candy
- Disabled unnecessary services (ala Blackviper's site)
- Disabled unnecessary startup programs
EDIT:
- Disabled Index Service
- Disabled Windows Search
My main reason for wanting to do this is that I'm having some issues when playing MP3s in WMP. They play fine until I say, launch Firefox. Doing so causes the playing MP3 to skip, or temporarily become garbled. I assume this is due to taxing the HDD, but since upgrading to an SSD is currently not an option, I'm trying to squeeze as much performance out of the system as I can.
Considering buying win 7 so i can bootcamp for 1st time. Before I do though, I want to know if/why it'll work. I've read that OSX 10.6 has driver issues witn nVidia hardware. Well, why would they be any different on Windows? Does Microsoft write its own drivers for Mac hardware? Or is it nVidia? I ask this b/c dont you have to install the drivers off the OSX disc? Doesn't make sense why apple would give you better drivers for windows than they do for OSX. Point is, I'd be doing this for gaming. I just don't see why there'd be any performance improvement with the SAME HARDWARE, just running windows instead.

does keeping a high brightness level all the time effect performance or display?

I currently use an iMac i7 with Windows XP SP3 installed on the Bootcamp partition. I've noticed recently that when I'm on the Windows side for a long period of time the iMac gets quite hot and the fans are raging with a loud roar! Obviously, this does not happen on the Mac OS side. I got quite concerned, so I restarted it in Mac OS to check the iStat. The CPU fan was over 2000rpm and some of the temps just reached over 60 degrees C. So I decided to keep it in Mac for the time being and everything decided to calm down to the 'normal' temperatures. I've searched Mroogle / Google for solutions and it appears people are using smc Fan Control for Windows to increase the fan speeds. I'm not sure if this is the right path to go down where I can override the fan speeds and just put up with the fan noise... but is there another solution? Are there any drivers released to help deal with this issue or is it a windows problem?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a legit copy of xp sp3 on a bootcamp partition on a new Imac. I follow all the prompted steps and windows goes throught he installer. It then tries to reboot and I get the message "disk not found press any key to continue"does not matter if I hit keys or not, at this point the machine is locked up and has to be manually shut down and restarted.

View 4 Replies View RelatedInstalled 10.6.5 a few days after it came out. I have an IMAC white version 4 years old. It now crashes several times a day. Symptoms are screen is locked and mouse and keyboard have no effect. Dont have any obscure software. In fact the problem has occurred when all I have open are a couple of Safari windows. It requires a restart which is pretty annoying as it tends to happen in the middle of doing something important like online bookings.
Earlier versions of this OS had many similar USB problems that were fixed in 10.6.4 (tho Apple never
mentioned them). Seems like the same problems have crept back in.
I have my Energy Saver preference set to turn off my monitor after 20 minutes of idle time. But the display never goes off.
Energy Saver used to work, now it doesn't and I have no idea why not, or what changed.

I've come into possession of a 1.83 Core Duo MacBook and I am curious if you're able to clock the processors on these in anyway? I appreciate the implications of doing this on a laptop / notebook type device, but I want to know in theory if it is possible. I understand the maximum ram on a MA254LL/A is 2GB... is this correct? Will it not ready any more? In terms of the CD drive, is it possible to upgrade it to a superdrive? Is this easy or simply not possible? I've seen a few on ebay, and would be curious to know if they'd work. How far can you get with a MA254LL/A, whats the maximum HDD you could pop in?

Used migration assistant to move my Blackbook apps and settings to the Air using a Time Machine backup from my Time Capsule - wirelessly. Two hours later (not terrible) and I'm using my Air with all my apps and setting - fantastic.
Question: My Blackbook also has a Bootcamp partition running Windows - is there a way to take that image and migrate it to my MB Air? I'd rather not have to purchase the Superdrive and re-install/setup the Windows OS on my Air....
I have a 2009 2.53GHz MacBook Pro which I bought a couple months ago. It's been working great, but lately, I've been noticing a lot of strange issues with video playback/general graphics and UI. These includes:- Laggy video performance, frame skipping, generally 2x slow video -- on both iTunes and web video. It's not as smooth as it used to be, though admittedly not totally unbarable - VLC shows a black screen, doesn't show the video - Randomly pixelated icons in the dock (it's almost like the Mac picks a new one everyday to pixelate), dock animation not 100% smooth, although fairly good (not sure if it used to be this way)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a program called "gfxCardStatus" that allows me to see which graphics card is being used and allows me to manually switch between them. I don't do anything graphically intensive in OS X (I only play games in bootcamp) but the nvidia card is being used most of the time and it makes my mbp hot and kills the time i can use the battery. I switched my MBP to only use the intel card in os x and have seen no performance or visual difference, but I was wondering if this is a bad idea?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Boot Camp recently and am I just imagining things or does having boot camp installed (but not running it) reduce the battery life on me running Mac OSX? (Yes I know running Windows takes more out of your battery life, but that's not what I"m asking here)
If I am wrong, would being "logged in" windows 7 cause this effect?
I have a Acer laptop before and I believe it was infect once. The viruses went away after about a month. Now I have all the files from that PC on a Seagate 1TB external hard drive. I have connected to my MBP a few time but now I am worried that those files might still be infected and that it will damaged my MBP.
1. How to find out if those files are infected and,
2. Will those files infect my MBP's performance, security, software and system.

Is anyone having slow SATA performance on their 09 mac pro in bootcamp. Just booting into windows takes a long time and trying to burn a disc or transfer something to an external hard drive takes a long time. I created a large iso file and burned it to a BD-50 RW disc in windows and it took approximately 4 hours and it was set to burn at the fastest speed which should of been 2x but never reached any faster than 0.7x. I burned the same iso in mac osx through disc utility and it took less than 2 hours. I transferred the same iso file to an external usb hard drive in windows and that took 4 hours which is extremely slow. Does anyone know how to get SATA operating at a normal speed. I checked in the device manager and it is set to operate in DMA mode.
View 10 Replies View RelatedWhere do you sit on the whole Genie Effect vs Scale Effect war that's been raging for the last 8 years? Whilst the Genie wowed me the first time I saw it, I chose Scale Effect pretty much as soon as I got OSX, preferring performance over prettiness. Now, years later, when I occasionally catch it on other peeps machines I think it just looks... tacky. I wonder how many people on here still have it switched on?

so I got my first mac last week and installed window xp and also parallel. I'll be using bootcamp for gaming and parallel to run software which are not available for mac. Now few questions: 1 - Is it good idea to use window xp or should I switch to windows 7? Which would have better performance in terms of loading and speed?
2 - given my mac's specs, the speed is bit slow like the booting up for both mac OS and bootcamp but parallel seems fine. Is this normal?
3 - It seems that when I'm using bootcamp, the computer is working over time and as a result, it gets hot really quickly though it cools down when i switch back to mac OS. If I use bootcamp for long while running complicated processes, for example scanning files from virus or moving big files to HD from an external disk, the HD or maybe the fan gives noticeable noise (like you can clearly hear it). However, less than 1 GB RAM and only 5-10% of CPU are being used. Is this normal?
4 - I got two external HDs and I've backed up my old pc data on them; one is 500GB and other one is 320 GB; NTFS file system. When I was moving the files (from EHDs to macbook HD or one EHD to another EHD) on macbook, it seems to take forever, specially the video/audio files. I tried this on bootcamp but got even worst result. In addition, reading files on macbook from these two EHDs was also slow. However, when I do the same on my pc, the speed is way better. Is this expected/normal?
I think I had couple of more questions but forgot them now so I guess I'll ask later when I would remember them.
I am tempted to purchase 2nd hand 13.3" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz, 2gb ram, 160gb hdd.
I have a need to run windows as a virtual machine for some occasional .NET development (which I am studying)
I have a couple of questions
What is the impact of battery life running a VM? I intended to run it in Unity mode and only have open .net tools such as visual web developer.
Also, does anybody know the performance of windows 7 in the new Fusion version? (What's aero like?)
Would the performance of an XP vm be better?
I have an external USB drive attached to my iMac. I've noticed that whenever there's heavy read/write activity on the drive (such as un-raring a large file or transcoding a video that's stored there), my whole system feels sluggish.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI occasionally get the BSOD sometimes on the Windows XP side of things in Boot Camp. I always use a mouse on the Windows side, as the trackpad is very glitchy and buggy. Sometimes, when I use the mouse for a prolonged period of time, I accidently touch the trackpad forgetting all of the sudden that i had the mouse (or i use it to scroll down) and the whole thing blue screens on me. It has happened 8 times already, each time blue screening after touching the mouse. I don't know why, but I find out that the mouse drivers are the one that is messing up my Windows XP SP3.

No matter which bootcamp driver I try or even Realtek's own vista one nothing works.
I downloaded the bootcamp 2.1 drivers and everything installed correctly , including the realtek ones. All the hardware looks fine in device manager but I dont hear anything out.
Should the default be speakers? It seems that it keeps the driver as microsofts own and it doesnt say anything about realtek. Could that be the problem?
I did not try the microphone jack yet but will in a few minutes.
Even if there is a hack , Im willing to try it. What is the exact audio chipset on this model of macbook pro?
