I'm installing a new HD in my MBP and realise that I don't have my original dvd's to hand. I've created a time machine back up of the machine, but I can't boot from that can I?Â

I bought a Mac OSX 10.6.3 Snow Leopard CD (Family Pack) to upgrade on my Macbook Pro, but it won't boot. There are sound like it was running but it reject in the end. My Macbook Pro is Intel Core Duo 2GHz with 2GB Ram. It is currently running OSX 10.5.8. I tried the disc on other Macbook running 10.6.6 purchased 2-3 years ago and it work. So I don't really know what happen with mine. My DVD drive work fine though.

From googling the issue it seems like the only solution anyone has had to the same problem is to re-install.
However I've lost my Leopard system discs.
I booted into my Bootcamp Windows installation and installed the latest drivers from the Snow Leopard disc which i recently purchased (and came today)
This gave me the option to read files (and presumably copy) from the mac partition but no delete function.
I have two problems here:
1. I only have 2.61GB free on the mac partition, Snow Leopard requires at least 5GB. Since I can't boot into OS X and Windows can't write to the partition i can't delete any files.
2. My mac won't boot the Snow Leopard DVD for installation. I hold C while booting and it has no effect. It does however run the Hardware test if i hold D while booting.
I have an external drive i could probaly make enough room on to back up my entire osx partition for a totally clean re-install.
However this requires some sort of access to the drive/write capabilities. Maybe something like bootable linux?
And any idea why my disc won't boot? (even if i had enough space for a install...that would be a bit pointless if i can't get the disc to boot)
I got my new Macbook today. I've reformatted and installed Snow Leopard. Then I set up Boot Camp and installed Windows 7. I installed all the drivers under Windows 7 using the Snow Leopard install disc. One problem that remains is under Windows 7, I can't tap the trackpad to click. I have to use a mouse.Anyone know of a fix? Can't find it under Apple Support at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac from 2008. It got stuck in an infinite boot loop, so I took it to the local Apple Store. After they ran some diagnostics, it was determined that it was either a bad Logic Board, or Hard Drive. Because of the age of the computer, he said he was unable to work on it. Said it was "legacy" or "vintage"or something. So he gave me a little direction on how to open it up, and how to get to the hard drive (I'm fairly comfortable working on hardware replacements). Using a borrowed hard drive, I was able to boot to a Windows XP install (this was an old hard drive out of a Windows PC), which tells me that the original hard drive is shot.Â
So I am going to purchase a new Hard Drive this weekend, but I am unsure how to install Mavericks. This is the only Mac I have access to, so I cannot use another Mac to create a bootable USB drive or CD/DVD. Mavericks doesn't come with a disc, so I cannot use that. Snow Leopard is the newest OS disc that I have, so I could use that, but was hoping to just do a clean Mavericks install instead.Â
I have a Time Machine backup from less than 2 weeks ago. Is it possible to use that backup to install the OS on a new, clean, hard drive?Â
Is there a way on a Windows computer, to make a boot USB drive that I can use on my iMac? Or am I better off using the Snow Leopard disc, and then use the App Store to update the OS?

I have a uMBP 2.26GHz with 4GB and 500GB HDD. I usually do the Disk Utility every once in a while and it recommended me to use the MAC OS X disk and repair the disk. I inserted the disk, restarted and held "C" and the disc was running and everything. Like 1 minute later my display went black but I can still hear the disc running. But that's all it happens. I have a 2007 Intel MBP, running Leopard. I purchased the family version of Snow Leopard. When I tried to install it, it just spins the disc for a minute, makes the noise like it's trying to read it and then spits it out. All other discs work fine with my MBP so I know it is not the disc drive itself. I have all software "up to date." My brother installed SL on both of his MBs, one newer than mine and one older, just fine (with the same disc). I haven't seen anything out there with this issue so I wanted to start a thread to see if anyone knows how to resolve this issue (beyond taking it back to Apple and exchanging).

There doesn't seem to be a clean install option without running the snow leopard disc from boot. Is there any way that I can run the install disc from boot via remote disc so I can run a clean install? View 1 Replies View RelatedI need your help please. It all started when I was trying to install Windows XP under Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro (Leopard). I followed the manual and made the partition for Windows (32GB), but when I inserted Windows XP Install CD and had to choose partition to install it on, there was just one that seemed to be my Leopard startup disc (it had some 120GB). I did not know what to do, so I just left the installation process and the notebook restarted. When it loaded, it was trying to boot from the Windows CD so I tried to install it, but same problem appeared -> restart. I tried to load Leopard by holding Option key while loading, but only options for windows and windows cd appeared, no Leopard -> Shut down. While booting, I force-ejected the CD by holding down trackpad button -> blinking underscore on black screen appeared. I shut the MBP down by holding power button and inserted Leopard Install CD. When it loaded, I booted from the CD by holding Option key. This time I was ready to even re-install Leopard just to make it work but when I had to chose the harddisk to install Leopard on, there was none. It seems to me that somehow nobody can see the harddisk and I have no idea what to do with it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo i have a mac Pro octo from May 2007. I upgraded to the 8800GT when they came out and not have any problems since. Today I encountered some problems with my hard drive and am trying to boot from either my Mac Pro Install disc or my Leopard Install disc and get an error everytime. When I try and boot from the disc it gives me an error and tells me i need to reboot. I have found out through the apple discussion forums that Leopard Discs before 10.5.2 do not have the drivers for the 8800GT, and therefore will not let you boot. What am I to do here. Is there any way I can get a newer leopard install disc? It seems I am going to have to reinstall an Ati X1900 to get my own install discs to work. This is really annoying to me, this is an awful design flaw. How do they expect you to upgrade your mac pro and not have problems like this.

I need your help diagnosing this early 2007 Macbook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. It isn't mine, rather my sister's, so I don't know the full details of everything as I don't see her all the time. Last December, I swapped in my 160gb 5400RPM SATA drive from my late 2006 MBP into her MBP as I had just bought and installed a 500gb 7200RPM drive into my MBP. I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard onto her machine, patched it up, and sent her on her way.
A few weeks ago, she came to me saying she was having trouble booting into OS X and was just having trouble using her laptop in general. The hard drive wasn't making any erratic noises, so I figured the system install had corrupted itself. The problem was I wasn't able to boot to the Snow Leopard DVD. The DVD would show up at boot when holding down the Option key to show boot devices, but when clicked, it would show the Apple logo, then the "prohibitory" symbol and the fans would spin up on full blast, with no further progress.
Booting into Single User mode, I was able to run disk repair and after running it over a few times, I was told the drive was without errors, the laptop booted fine (minus the booting to Snow Leopard DVD) and I gave the MBP back to her.
Fast forward to today, she's having issues booting in to OS X again. It'll show the Apple boot logo, but the small spinning circle will freeze, and the whole laptop will come to a halt. I still can't boot to the DVD either, with the same symptoms as above. I'm sure I can boot into Single User mode, run Disk Repair, and probably be good, but I want to attack this issue at the source.
Is the hard drive I've got in her MBP going bad (I can't hear any of the erratic noises you hear when you know a drive is going bad)? What else could it be? What about the inability to boot to the Snow Leopard DVD? What is the problem and how can I fix it? Thanks, and sorry for the long winded post.
I want to reformat my hdd and split it on few partitions but i get following problems
- Disk utility doesn't allow to split it, i check it in single user mode, nothing works
- Doesn't want to boot, I tried to boot it from external hdd, usb, cd, dvd, nothing works, I just see Grey apple and that's it,nothing happends

I am trying to create a workflow that will monitor a webpage and send me email if the page contains a certain keyword. I got it working, I get email; the email contains the keyword, or is an empty message when the keyword is missing.I would rather not get these empty messages is possible. Until I figure this out, I may send these message at some gmail address and create a fiter there to forward only message with that keyword. Not elegant but should work. Anyway, long term I want a more elegant solution. Here is what I have in Automator:
1) Get Specific ULRs
2) Get Text from Webpage
3) Filter Paragraphs (and here is where I check whether the keyword shows up or not)
4) New mail message (which contains they keyword from #3, or is empty)
5) Send outgoing messages.
As I said, the workflow always works, and will send a message with that keyword, or an empty message. How do I make the workflow send email ONLY if they keyword is detected? There is not IF in Automator as far as I can see. This is the first time I try to do something in Automator so maybe I am missing something.
