MacBook Air :: How To Secure (no Kensington Lock)

Dec 8, 2010

Is there a solution to this problem? I am planning to use my MBA at work and it requires me, at some times during the day, to leave my notebook unattended while I go off and do other tasks. Unfortunately, I don't have my own office and I share a work area with other people. Any suggestions?

MacBook Air :: Trying The Kensington SD200v Dock

Apr 21, 2008

Got an MBA a while back (Mid February), and am just now migrating out of my old Dell into my MBA. I find myself in a quandary -- buy bluetooth accessories or invest in a dock for the MBA.

I heard the Kensington sd200v dock is nice, and OS X drivers are in beta. Anyone running this setup on their Mac? I really need the ability to unplug and go at the drop of a hat. The prospect of outputting graphics for an extended desktop, audio, and a USB hub all through one USB connection is VERY attractive. Needless to say, it will all be in vain if I need to reset my graphics properties every time a disconnect and reattach. I have no experience with Kensington products, and ma curious how well they function in the Mac environment.

Hardware :: Kensington's Irreplaceable USB Receivers

Sep 28, 2009

This is mostly in hopes of someone else noticing it and it saving them the same problem, but if you've got a clever suggestion, I'm up for it:

I like the Kensington Slimblade media mouse--neat idea being able to flip it over and use it as a remote.

Until, that is, I discovered the hard way that if you lose your USB receiver or it breaks, you just junked your mouse.

Applications :: Using Kensington Adding Machine Software?

Jul 5, 2006

I have been using a caculator software product called Kensington Adding Machine (v.1.01) on my Macintosh computers for the last 12 years.

While the software is compatible with Mac OS 10 via Mac Classic the new Intel based Macs won't support Mac Classic. Hence I will be unable to use Kensington Adding Machine software when I next upgrade.

The version I'm using is dated 1993 Kensington Microware Limited. No one at Kennsington today even remembers the product.

I have tried many times over the years to find an alternative software product that does what Kensington Adding Machine does. It adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides, has a floating decimal point, it has a paper tape, it saves and prints and it has a small footprint on my desktop and sits in a 2.5" x 3" corner of my 17" Powerbook desktop. It even sounds like an adding machine or calculator when one enters numbers--- reassuring the user that his/her numbers actually got entered.

Nothing I've found on the internet (including Version Tracker) or in catalogs duplicates the simplicity, inconspicuousness and overall effectiveness of Kensington Adding Machine. As a financial person who works off of three laptop computers, I've found nothing on either platform that does what the Kensington Adding Machine does.

Mac Pro :: USB Not Working After Installing Kensington Track Ball

Mar 4, 2008

Last week my company moved locations. I carefully packed up my mac pro in the original box, and transported it myself, so there were no drops or anything like that.

Once I installed the computer in my new office, a USB hub stopped working.

Today, my new monitor arrived. A Samsung SyncMaster 245BW. After I installed that, my Kensington PRO Trackball is not recognized. I uninstalled/reinstalled the Kensington MouseWorks software, but still it is not recognized.

MacBook Pro :: Safari4.0 Doesn't Work - Shuts Down - Ichat Can't Work

Jul 8, 2009

I told myself not to do it. Don't update the Safari software to 4.0, you know how they always mess up these things. And yet, per accident I did. Of course Safari 4.0 doesn't work. Every time I open it, it shuts down. iChat also doesn't work anymore, and even the Dashboard shuts down every now and then. In addition, the computer feels incredibly slow. I can't download rapidshare links on iGetter anymore and everything just feels wrong. Countless threads have been opened on this matter with a variety of different problems for different people. Yet I have not read a proper solution. I have seen all kinds of technical solutions being offered but I'm not a computer wiz and I do not know the terms they use. I just want to go back to Safari 3.2 or at least the one before the 4.0 But I read that deleting Safari 4 and reinstalling 3.2 won't work because of a certain webkit that got installed with it, making it impossible to go back.

Software :: Won't Work To Stop Time Machine / Can't Work With Exe

Sep 3, 2009

Since I just lost my hard drive on my iMac 24 Intel, I am using external hard drive to backup via Time Machine. My question is what procedures are needed when you disconnect ext. hard drive? Do you change Time Machine from ON to OFF?

I know that I have to eject the ext. hard drive using proper commands, but what happens whenever I reinstall the ext. hard drive? Does Time Machine start over from the beginning or just update for changes since my last backup via Time Machine?

When I go on trips, I store ext hard drive in a safe and this is why I am asking.

Software :: Won't Work With File Size / Can't Work With Settings

Mar 23, 2008

Why are Apple applications are so much larger than similar Microsoft applications. Some examples: Word -12.7 MB and Pages - 273.4 MB: Excel - 11.7 MB and Numbers - 138.6 MB. Both Word and Excel are sophisticated programs and I would have assumed they would be large, and that since Pages and Numbers are relatively new so they would be lean, but the opposite seems to be the case. They all work well except Numbers is slow. Is that a function of size? Is obesity epidemic in programming as well as programmers?

Mac Pro :: Won't Work With Dual 4870's / Can't Work With 2nd Graphic Card

Jul 17, 2009

In the last 2 weeks before my MP shipped, I've asked 3 Apple Geniuses at Apple stores and Apple Tech support about running dual DVI 23" Cinema Displays with 4870's. They ALL said I would need a second card. When I attempted the install, there were only 2 power cord clips on the back face of the main board. Both being used by the onboard Radeon 4870. What to do next? Another call to Apple support offered me a nice Indian girl who I could not really understand. Finally, I called a local non-Apple shop that I frequent for hardware and service issues. The very nice service tech told me to take the 2nd card back, since that original 4870 will drive 2 monitors perfectly, in my case, with a simple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor for the 2nd 23" display.

how would you install any 2nd graphics card, if a 4870 takes up both power clips?

OS X :: Won't Work With Game Graphics / Can't Work On Full Screen

Jan 12, 2010

I'm on a IMac OS X (version 10.5.8) and I just noticed a bit of a change in the graphics while playing Heroes of Newerth. I left all the graphic stuff on medium quality, and I've noticed now that when it is on full screen the picture is sketchy. When I minimize the full screen (apple m) i realize its a lot smoother than it is in wide screen (no kidding huh?). Before I thought it was just due to me having the IMac wireless, but I've noticed it's been happening for a week already and I usually get better bandwidth when no one is home. So is this a graphics card issue or what and if so how would i deal with this?

Mac Pro :: Won't Work With 24" ACD To 4870 / Can't Work With Adaptor

Mar 13, 2010

I just picked up a second 24" ACD with the mini display port. I already have one, so the mini display port on my 4870 is in use. So I think I need an adaptor to go from the MDP on the second display to the DVI on the 4870.

However, this adaptor has a male MDP and a female DVI. The ACD has a male MDP, so I think I need an adaptor which is a female MDP and a female DVI.

I find it a little strange that it is so difficult to put two identical monitors on the Mac Pro. I did search the forums, but kept getting hits for the above adaptor and I am not sure how it would work.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Work With 6gb RAM

Feb 10, 2010

Before I start, here's a little back story. My MBP is a late '08 2.53ghz with 4gbs of RAM, 9600 card, 5400rpm hard drive. It's also a refurbished model. Every since I got it I've been paranoid (despite the assurance that Apple's refurb program it excellent) that parts of the computer are now functioning at full potential, specifically the 9600 graphics card.

I don't use the computer for games that much, and when I do, the 9400 is usually enough for Halo, Jedi Knight, etc. However I keep seeing videos like this where the 9600 performs better than I can ever get it to.

For example, I have Bioshock 1 on a Windows 7 bootcamp partition, which always runs the 9600. To play with a frame rate averaging around 30 I have to scale the resolution down to around 1280x800 or 1024x768. Now I see that some one is playing Bioshock 2 at the same frame rate I play 1 at.

So, here're my questions.

In the video I linked to, the MBP has a 3.06ghz processor with a 7200 rpm HD. How much does that contribute to gameplay? I remember hearing those things only sped up loading times.

How much would putting 6gb of ram in my '08 MBP increase performance, if any? According to barefeats, it doesn't really help at all.

I also remember hearing that more RAM wouldn't help the 9600 because it's a mobility card - it has internal restrictions had increasing ghz, HD rpm, or RAM won't help.

Is it possible that my 9600 is defective due to it being a refurbished part? How could I check?
