Software :: Won't Work With File Size / Can't Work With Settings

Why are Apple applications are so much larger than similar Microsoft applications. Some examples: Word -12.7 MB and Pages - 273.4 MB: Excel - 11.7 MB and Numbers - 138.6 MB. Both Word and Excel are sophisticated programs and I would have assumed they would be large, and that since Pages and Numbers are relatively new so they would be lean, but the opposite seems to be the case. They all work well except Numbers is slow. Is that a function of size? Is obesity epidemic in programming as well as programmers?
I'm must be hitting some strange key combination / trackpad gesture (I just got a macbook pro) and my font size in safari keeps randomly increasing. This happens on the desktop with the icons as well.
why the iphoto library file size in the finder appears to be a certain size, while iphoto itself reports a very different size. Is there any way to recover any disk space or reconcile the numbers here? Please see the attachments below, it may make a bit more sense that way. I would like to recover the disk space and if it really is a 16gb difference somewhere.
I purchased Xslimmer recently, and I've just notice a big issue. In Xslimmer, it says the current size of the app is say 20 mb, but Finder says it is 50 mb. Same thing after I slim it. I checked on a different computer, and it said the same thing. Could someone check the filesize of Mail.app in Finder (mine was 77.4 mb), and the current size in XSlimmer (said it was 25.5mb).
In order for FCP to be able to log and transfer my video from my panasonic camcorder, I shoot on a camcorder setting that creates great video, but the files sizes are huge. Almost 1gb a minute. The video comes in 1920 x 1080, apple prores 422, 29.97 fps. I want to edit the footage and then export the timeline using a setting that will drastically reduce the file size.
done some searching and looked at the sticky but I'm still undecided about what size to get. I had originally decided on a 17inch MBP but now I'm leaning towards getting a smaller MBP and a new iMac. I'm not looking top of the line but I would like to be able to play WOW on occasion and do some on the road photo stuff (but nothing to the level of pixel peeping). I'm looking at the faster of the 2 13 inch MBP variations versus a 15 inch with the same basic specs. What I'm worried about is the 13 inch having enough horsepower to do the simple photo and games that I'd like it to do.
Right now I have basically the same setup that I'm looking at doing again. A 20 inch iMac G5 and 12.1 inch iBook G4 both bought last half of 2005 (just after the iBook was updated - remember my order was delayed waiting on the new specs). The iMac can run WOW fairly well BTW, just lag evident in the trade district in SW.
TIA and hopefully this isn't too redundant with other questions.
When using Safari and once on the desktop some how with the touchpad (MacBook Pro) the font and or icon sizes have changed. I am able to figure out how to change it back but I am not sure what I am pressing on the touchpad to cause this.
In order to move several dozen gigabytes of files between systems, while preserving permissions, I'm considering dumping the lot into a tarball, transferring that, and then chowning the contents after extraction.
Is there a limit to the size of a .tar or .tgz that OS X can create or extract? The older machine is running 10.4.11, if that makes a difference.
how much diskspace Leopard and Snow Leopard each consume on your harddisk? Only the OS, no add ons?
I'm considering the purchase of an MBA or MBP with a 128 GB SSD, but I'm running very low on my 160GB HDD in my current notebook, and was wondering if L or SL needed less space on the disk than vista or xp pro.
what snow leopard reports the size of the 128GB SSD to be. Mine is reporting at ~121GB, which seems like less than it should since Snow Leopard uses base-10 for calculating drive space now.
I want to install an ssd in my lower optical bay and install the OS and applications? My question is what size SSD would be sufficient. On OWC's website the price difference between the 240gb and the 480gb is $900. Will the 240gb be sufficient for the long haul or do I need to bite the bullet and get the 480gb? I will be installing 4 2gb Hitachi drives in the other hard drive bays.
the dock/menu bar at the bottom gets in the way, and causes the windows to overlap when i position them vertically, or when i try to do quarter screens.
I've been searching Google for a solution to this - I like all my Finder windows to be the same size, no matter what folder it is. Keeps everything looking universal. Nothing annoys me more than having to keep resizing bloody windows, because the default size has horizontal and vertical scroll bars! I like my Finder window to accommodate 5 folders horizontally.
I've been looking into Terminal commands to see if there is anything in there that would allow me to change the default dimensions, but found nothing.
I'm looking to set some virtual hosts up in Terminal. I'm accessing the set up fine (sudo nano /private/etc/hosts)
But I can't figure out what I need to do in order to enter IP addresses and URL's. None of the HotKeys listed at the bottom of the screen seem to give me what I want.
I'd like to set up Safari so that when I click the green "Maximize" button on the top left, the Safari window goes to a certain size and when I click it again, it goes to another size. Is there any way to do this? I've never really seen a use for Safari's green button as it doesn't really do anything that I can see.
I've recently been having trouble attaching files when using gmail. When I compose a message and I try to attach a file, the window that opens up is too big. It's difficult to click the "Okay" or "Cancel" buttons because they're off the screen. I can't seem to find a way to resize the window (the usual way of resizing by pulling the corner doesn't work).
I have a forwarding email address that I give out to everyone as my main address - it saves hassle with different addresses, changing of ISP and instances such as the Apple shift to Mobile Me. However, I want to set-up MobileMe so that my forwarding address appears as the from address in emails. How can I do this? I've tried to add it as one of the addresses in the Mail app Preferences pane but this seems to create a problem with sending.
I have been asked to send some photos to company, and to watermark them as property of that company. I have never done it before, and indeed am not sure what it exactly means. I think it mean it will have invisible data in the files metadata stating " Property of..." etc.
How can I do this.....clear and simple please as I'm no expert.
I'm not a total newbie with mac and computers in general, but I cannot get the one and only super drive to eject... yes, I have hit the eject button, it shows the eject icon in the screen and nothing... how can I get the thing to eject?
is it possible to set "loop" movies & audio files in quicklook so that you don't need to press play again all the time? is there anywhere a setting or "workaround" (aka "break" into some pref-file and set the preference somewhere to "loop")
I was wondering wat the recommended temperature for the macbook 13". I've got SMC fan control and it shows mine it 56C but i set it to Higher setting but it doesn't stay onto the minimum speed i set it.
the application dock at the bottom of the screen has disappeared on my MacBook Air. Even if I go into system preferences and click the dock setting to show the Dock bar on the screen it still doesn't appear.
I have an Airport Base station. I need to reset this base station back to the factory defaults. I want to wipe away all settings.
First, how do I determine which kind of Base station that I have? The base station is white with two cat5 jacks, USB, and telephone jack. I think it is a dual port station. I don't know if this would a Graphite or Snow model.
Second, how do I reset the base station. Do I use the small reset button on the back of the unit? OR do I use Airport Base Utility software? If so, which version should I use? I am using OS 10.4.11.
Third, does anyone know of a good user manual for this particular model?
I have recently given up on anything PC and moved to Mac. Mostly I am very happy with my decision but a couple of things niggle me and I don't seem to be able to change them.
In imail when delete an email from any of my mail accounts or the inbox, imail automatically selects the next newest email. I would like it to select the next oldest email. Is there anyway of changing this?
I know this is quite petty! but I'm just used to it working that way in outlook and keep deleting email I want to keep.
