MacBook Pro :: Unplugging Firewire Often Fixes Freezes In The Finder?

Oct 23, 2010

why that often when your machine appears to have frozen and appears to be non responsive unplugging the firewire connector results in the machine becoming unfrozen and responsive again. Albeit now reminding you that a volume has been prematurely ejected.

Intel Mac :: Daisy Chained Firewire 800 LaCie D2 Quadras - Finder Locks Up?

May 7, 2012

Has anyone successfully connected multiple 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra drives using daily chained Firewire 800 to a 2011-model 27" iMac? Has anyone else had process lockups when connecting multiple 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra drives using daisy chained Firewire 800?  How was this problem resolved?New 27" iMac (2,7GHz i5, 2TB internal disk, 8GB RAM, OS Lion 10.7.3)).  I connected two LaCie 3TB d2 Quadra external drives, daisy chained to a single Firewire 800 port.  (Yes, I performed LaCie's software update to the d2 Quadras.)  The finder locks up every day or two; Aperture locks up every few days.  the iMac sometimes doesn't go to sleep as specified in the power saver settings. Emptying a few GB from the trash can take DAYS. Copying a 60 GB Aperture library within the internal hard drive can take many hours.  Forcing a Quit of Finder or Aperture doesn't allow them to be correctly restarted.  The iMac will not shut down from the menu.  It must be powered off by holding power button for 6-10 seconds. VMWare Fusion 4 and MS Office 2010 are the only non-Apple software on this computer.

Software :: Finder Freezes For One User On IMac G5

May 31, 2008

iMac G5 running Tiger, Well in my infinite boredom I tried to make an image sequence out of the movie Braveheart using Quicktime Pro. I don't even know why I guess I just wanted to see what would happen. I set the computer to its task and went to bed, in the morning the computer was non responsive so I restarted manually. The computer powered up fine, but everything was missing from the desktop (and still is). Finder wouldn't open, but some programs will right away after you've restarted, but eventually it freezes up again. I try to relaunch finder, freezes again.

Using the startup disk and disk utility I was able to find that there are supposedly upwards of 65000 images on the desktop from Braveheart. I used the First Aid utility but it made no difference. Im pretty sure the computer is stuck trying to load all the images, but leaving it running for 24+ hours does nothing, it eventually goes into sleep mode like its not doing anything. I am able to login just fine on other users, but I cant access my files as there is no permission or whatever. I'm fine with reinstalling my OS, but I really need to get at some files on my login.

MacBook Pro :: Unplugging And Replugging Power Adapter?

I would like to know whether it is safe to, let's say, unplug the power adapter and then replugging it in like 20 seconds, for example, if I'm moving to a new room. Will it have a negative effect on the battery? I tried to search MRoogle but there are so many threads that it is literally impossible to find what you're looking for, sometimes.

Software :: LaCie Porsche Drive Freezes Finder?

Sep 5, 2009

I have an external 500GB hard drive made by Lacie (the minimlistic metal Porsche design) which I use to do a full back up every few months of my internal hard drives.

I noticed yesterday when I plugged it in that it crashed the Finder on my MacPro (early 2008 dual quad core desktop) running 10.5.8. The finder just froze and after Force Quit would not relaunch. I had to restart the machine by pressing and holding the power button. This happened repeatedly, each time after the external drive had been running for 10-15 minutes, so I tried it with my MacBook Pro, also running 10.5.8. Exactly the same thing happened -- the Finder froze and I had to reboot the machine to restart it.

MacBook Pro :: SSD In 2010 - Enter Time Machine And / Or Finder The Machine Freezes

Jan 1, 2011

Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.

MacBook Pro :: Why Plugging / Unplugging Headphone Give Beachballs

Oct 18, 2009

I'm having a weird problem on a two-week old 13" MBP. When I plug in headphones whatever sound was playing, if any, will stop for 10-15 seconds and during this time the volume keys on the keyboard are unresponsive (along with any keyboard keys that operate hardware things...backlight for keyboard, display brightness, although the dashboard and expose keys work). Same goes if I unplug the headphones. If I'm in iTunes, I get a beachball isolated to iTunes during this. When iTUnes recovers from the beachball it "realizes" that it should have actually been playing for the last ten seconds and catches up. I fresh install snow leopard a few days ago. Why would plugging/unplugging headphones (they are the ones that came with my iPhone 3GS) give a beachball in iTunes?

Intel Mac :: Finder Quits / Stalls And Freezes - Electrical Damage?

Jul 2, 2012

My 2.33gh intel core 2 is acting erratic. The finder quits, stalls and freezes...it turns off and then reappears. Programs fail. adobe will not run. It was on during the huge electrical storm last weekend. It started acting like this after. It was on a surge protector, but those are not 100%.

I can get a ways into backing up files. I am attempting to install Lion, but I did not journal the partition. And It looks like I have to clean install and erase the HD. If power surge did damage, software will not work. Does the finder issue look like electrical damage?

MacBook Pro :: 15 Firewire Unable To List Firewire Devices And Takes 5-6 Start Up?

Feb 16, 2009

I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!

OS X Mavericks :: Finder Freezes And Won't Relaunch When Attempting To Backup Using Time Machine

Jun 6, 2014

I have been backing up for years using Time Machine (TM) which uses a hard drive connected to my Time Capsule on my network. I use an external drive connected to the Time capsule.Every night, my MBP is scheduled to backup which it has done for years. The last successful backup was 4 days ago. It stopped working and when I tried to click on TM starting manually, it hangs up and freezes Finder. I try to relaunch Finder and it freezes the computer by taking all icons off my desktop. I can use mail and other programs but FINDER will not work. I have used disk utilities to check the drive AND repair permissions.

The only way I can shut down is by holding the on/off button and then restarting. The computer starts up fine and works UNTILL I try to back up to TM again. The whole thing happens again. My O/S is regulary updated and I checked that too.

THere must be something corrupted or screwed up with the TM / Finder links.

MacBook Pro :: 13" - Unplugging Cord Or Device Doesn't Flicker Screen When In Sleep

Sep 3, 2009

I bought this machine after selling my old Aluminium MacBook expecting simply better battery and a bit faster, but there's tons of little updates that I'm thoroughly impressed with.

- Unplugging a cord or device from MBP doesn't flicker the screen when in sleep

- Screen "fades" in after sleep instead of instantly popping in

- If I have the screen at lowest brightness, and wake from sleep, before it would flicker full brightness then go to low again, now it stays low

- Backlighting had so much bleed on old MacBook that it was painful to use, it "bled" everywhere. Now it's only the letter of the key and a small rim around the key

OS X :: Inside Snow Leopard's UTI - Apple Fixes Creator Code

Sep 22, 2009

Snow Leopard's abandonment of Creator Code metadata, used to open a file with its creating application, has some users are worried that Apple has killed off a core Mac-centric feature. Instead, Apple has invented a superior alternative for the old Creator Code in order to support a variety of new features. Here's why, and what the new Uniform Type Identifiers offer. What is a Creator Code?

Back in the early 80s, Apple developed a variety of unique conventions to make the Macintosh intuitively easy to use, almost to a magical extent. One example pertains to invisible file metadata that helped the system identify documents using Type and Creator Codes. Each file was tagged with both a Type and a Creator, allowing the system to distinguish between applications that could open a file and the default application that should open the file. The Finder could also use this invisibly associated file metadata to present custom file icons for different files of the same type but created by different applications, such as two JPEGs, one saved by Graphic Converter and the other by Photoshop..............

OS X :: Latest 10.6.2 Beta Packs Fixes For VMWare/iMacs/Apple TV

Nov 4, 2009

Apple has released a new beta of the Mac OS X 10.6.2 update with fixes for various performance issues dealing with AirPort, graphics drivers, and Apple TV, among others.

Those familiar with the build, titled 10C540 have said that it contains fixes for AirPort performance issues on the newly released iMacs and also resolves a problem which arose when plugging and unplugging a system to an Apple TV. A VMWare fix is also included, presumably for the newly released Fusion version 3.0.

The new build also fixes reported panic issues with USB, Apple Filing Protocol, and some video cards.

In the 10.6.2 update, Apple plans on fixing and tweaking nearly 150 OS X components.

Some components slated for fixes include: AppleBacklight, Battery Menu, Dictionary, Expose, FileSync, Family Controls, Fonts, Front Row, HFS, Inkwell, iPhoto, MobileMe, OpenCL, Parental Controls, QuickTime, Screen Sharing, Spell Checker, Spotlight, Time Machine, and USB.

Mac OS X 10.6.2 is expected to be released sometime in November and will reportedly be around 480 MB in size.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

OS X :: Snow Leopard Fresh Clean Install Fixes Bugs?

Jan 24, 2010

When Snow Leopard came out, I backed up via Time Machine and did a clean install, then restored via Time Machine. Ive been having three main problems, among a few small ones. When I right click the dock, half the time it freezes, denying access to the dock or finder for a good minute or two. Also, front row puts tagged tv shows in the movie section, and catagorizes them as "various" in the tv show section. On top of all that, safari is acting up.

Ok so I was planning on upgrading the ram to 3GB, the HD to 500GB, and do a fresh install of snow leopard. I'm assuming that time machine backs up all the system files and garbage that clogs up the system, so I'm planning on just dragging the files to a external hard drive, installing snow leopard on a brand new 500GB drive, then moving my files back. Will this fix my bugs? Or should I just install leopard instead? Btw leopard ran pretty slugish after a while, and sl did make my computer faster, but I assume the ram upgrade will keep leopard up to par.

Hardware :: Apple Fixes 27inch IMac Glitches With Mac OS X Security Updates

Apr 14, 2010

Apple on Wednesday afternoon issued a number of updates, addressing high processor usage and other glitches in its 27-inch iMac, as well as various security updates for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

27-inch iMac updates

Two updates released Wednesday address issues with the 27-inch big screen iMac, released in October 2009.

"27-inch iMac EFI FW Update 1.0" is recommended for all systems with quad-core Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The update resolves an issue that caused high processor utilization when playing audio through the headphone output, and fixes a problem that prevented the display backlight from turning on after powering on the iMac.

The 2.1MB update is available for download from Apple. It requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later.

"27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0" fixes Target Display Mode compatibility issues on the 27-inch desktop iMac. The 397KB update also requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later.

I'm guessing the update maps them out, somehow. Very cool stuff.

MacBook :: Connect External Harddrive With Firewire 800 To Macbook With Firewire 400?

OS X :: Finder Freezes During Copy "some Data Could Not Be Read Or Written"

Jan 15, 2009

I am running osx 10.5.4 on a brand new macbook. I have an old, crappy external hard drive that works intermittently with a bunch of large files on it that I am copying to my new, fancy external hard drive. Problem is, more than half the time, finder will report "unable to complete the operation because some data on 'filename' could not be read or written. (Error Code -36)"

This would be no problem, as I could then just cancel the copy and try again. But Finder freezes the copy window open, and it will not close by clicking on the "x" in the copy window. The only way to try again is to relaunch Finder. I do not want to force finder to quit every time I try to copy a file to my new drive. Is relaunching finder repeatedly bad for my system or hardware? Seems like a glitch. Is there a way around this?
