I am set to receive my first MBP tomorrow afternoon! (15" 2.66ghz 4gb ram 320gb hd). I was wondering what everyone recommends to do once I get it. Should I drain the battery right away? What are some necessary widgets/programs? Any products that are a must have? (palm guard?) Basically anything that you think will maximize my experience with my first mac.
View 20 RepliesI gave my grandfather a macbook and he is bothering the @*&^ out of me with it. He keeps having wireless problems because he likes to play with it and whenever one of his dam sites wont load he thinks its the computers fault and messes it up. Is there anyway to remove the wifi icon from the menu bar and lock access to system prefs and anything else that he casn use to destroy the computer? I looked at parental controls and they dident do what i wanted.

The computer is painted Envy Green and the paint job is perfect. I posted a while back my new iPhone done by Colorware because I felt that other than the website I was not finding any real world photos on the internet.
Like a lot of you, I've been holding out for the new MacBook Pro's. Today was the day. I almost sprung for the 15" Hi-Res but decided to go all out and buy the 17" with the 1920x1200 screen. I've owned pretty much all of the Mac notebooks since the PowerBook days (12", 13", 15", and 17") and there is something about the 17" that sets it apart from the rest. It is hands down the sexiest 17" notebook on the market today. I just love it.

fonts must be messed up in Snow Leopard. Some system things display strange fonts. For example, my user name in upper right hand corner of the screen doesn't look right.ALso, the font on the "tabs," in Safari is not correct, and I can compare it to other SL computers.

I have the late 2008 MBP which has only 2gb of ram. I'm planning on upgrading the ram. With this, I'm just wondering if there is anything one has to know when doing this. Considering that I boot on both windows (bootcamp) and osx, would the ram be recognized immediately? Or do i have to install or do something first before it does. Is it more advisable to reformat the whole computer? Maybe because of some performance issues.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had an initial thread in Mac Software as I initially thought it was just a Safari 4 Beta issue.(Original thread here)But since then, it's spread from Safari 4 to my trash can and now to Numbers and Pages (It has not done anything to Keynote), the bottom panel (but not the top one) in Yahoo messenger... Even the silver navigation bar on the Apple website shows up as this weird metallic brown.What's even weirder is that the trash can is the normal silver metallic when the OS first loads and then changes to the brownish one. No amount of messing with display settings helps. Resetting the NVRAM initially got everything back to normal, but then boom, it's all stuck.

Since I have always used PC's, although I am very excited, I am trying to gather all information possible to make the switch easy and be productive on the the new MacBook. I have a simple question, I know on windows when you have many things running at one time it tends to bog and slow down. Running things in the background are the issues I am getting at. Does running application and widgets in the background of a MacBook cause them to slow noticeably?

This happens to all videos on websites (see the BestSkinsEver, there's supposed to be the Gizmodo iP4 leak where there's just a big white space). I was curious to see if this happens to flash games too, which it does. All the pages were fully loaded when I took a screenshot.
View 3 Replies View RelatedToday I received my Optibay-clone and hard drive, and tried to install it. Unfortunately, I messed it up and don't think I can finish the job now. Using driver bits supplied by ifixit, I managed to ruin the screws in step 10 of this guide: [URL] Tight, tiny screws are the bane of my existence. I don't understand what on earth I was supposed to do to remove these particular screws, when all the other screws in the computer didn't pose a problem at all. See awesome attached pics of mutilated screw, and the 10 or so different Phillips screwdrivers, none of which managed to do the job. So, am I completely screwed, or does someone out there have a magnificent suggestion to aid me in my plight?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy trackpad is now having some troubles on my Alu macbook. I can't highlight or drag things anymore. Occasionally it will work but it will be jerky and only highlight bits that I don't necessarily need. This is vital for me as I need to copy parts of statutes etc. as I'm in law school. I think I have installed the firmware update but I'm not entirely sure - if someone could link me to it that'd be grand.
My internet on campus is also extremely slow.. It doesn't have anything to do with the signal either. We have an Apple reseller on campus who said it might be a problem with the airport card.
Basically - should I take it in? Obviously it has some issues but I don't know if I'm being too pedantic or what..
I know this is an elementary question, but I do not want to delete all of my pictures, music, etc after I put them on my external hard drive and come to find out that I can never get them back.
Will someone please reassure me that once they are transferred, they are still accessible if needed?
Im recently registered but have been lurking the site for a few months now waiting for the new MBPs to come out. They came out and I got one (my first mac) but I have 2 issues.
1. There is a folder in my documents folder, from a program i manually installed via CD that keeps reappearing. Everytime i delete it, it comes back when i restart the computer. I have already uninstalled the program, but the empty folder keeps coming back.
2. Also, when i try and right click -->open with a video file, VLC comes up twice, any way to make it only appear once?
My MacBook Pro is running hot. The Apple store ran tests overnight and said it is above average. Their suggestion was to send it to the Service Depot and for $310 plus tax anything out of spec will be replaced. Basically sounds like a good deal but I can't give up the machine for the 3-5 days it takes. I typically have many things open, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Calendar, Mail, Safari and have multiple things open in each. Would reducing that number have any impact on the heat being generated?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy pointer/trackpad is doing weird things on its own.
For example: If my pointer is sitting idle it displays a drop down box that says "Back,forward, stop, bookmark this page, send link, view all,and various other selections." Another example, if I use the trackpad to go to an icon on my dock, sometimes it takes the icon and takes if off dock and removes it. Another example, if I'm down at the bottom of my screen and typing like I am now, I get done and say I scroll up to the top to go somewhere else, all the areas that I traveled across get highlighted (like a paste and copy highlight). I have checked my settings in trackpad and that looks fine. I have rebooted, shut down, unplugged my internet and even went to disk utilities and repair. I did notice this after I have visited a site to order something that I needed to add a picture too. In order for me to drag my picture to thing I was ordering I needed to use their tool. It was after this that my pointer/track pad has been working weird.
I'm looking for a (preferably free) way to cut things like people out of images, so that I can paste them on top of other images etc.
I've seen it done all over the place but have no idea how to do it myself. What software for Mac can do this?
I was wondering if I could program my menu button on my mac controller to do a screen capture on VLC! Is this possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn a white plastic unibody macbook 13in, with 10.6.8, and safari 5.1.4, I can not update flash, nor can I download Google Chrome. They both go to a blackscreen for under the tabs, but load the progress bar/url bar. Additionally, the problem is similar in Firefox, which leads me to believe that this may be a OSX issue, not a safari issue. Please help, this is incredibally annoying for someone who plays a large quantity of flash games, uses youtube, et cetera.
