OS X :: Force Quit Safari And MacBook Pro Froze
May 13, 2010
So I was on stick am yesterday and safari started to bog down, then I couldn't scroll or click on anything at all. So I proceeded to go to force quit menu and the cursor froze. I'm new to mac so i'm upset. Do macs freeze often? If its safaris fault doesn't that mean that the OS shouldn't crash anyway

I just bought a Macbook Pro. When using safari, it freezes at least once a day to a point I can't force quit, and had to do a hard shut down. I've figured out that if I am using my computer and safari for more than a couple of hours, Safari just freezes. An apple support representative did mention that laptops were not meant to be constantly on, so I have been shutting it down when not in use. Still, I shouldn't have to shut down after an hour just to keep Safari from freezing.
Does this sound normal? Is there an easy fix? Do I need to look at getting this computer replaced? Or should I download a better web browser?
I'm also new to Mac, and thought switching from a windows would mean better reliability. So far I have been unimpressed with my computer. I just want it to work without worrying about having to force it to shut down once a day.

I am using a MacBook Air. When I attempt to select a file for uploading, Safari freezes and the spinning ball goes on and on. Example: When attempting to select and upload a document from my computer to the google drive, the wheel starts to spin when attempting to choose a file. I am unable to upload anything due to this issue.

Since the last update my Safari 4.0.3 crashes a lot. Like 3 or 4 times a day. Either that or it shows the spinning beach ball, meaning Safari is not responding and needs to be force quit. It looks like it's happening when a page is (re)loading. This looks a lot like the continuous crashing that happened to Safari 4 when it was just launched (was that in April, or May?). That was then reason for me to switch to Firefox. If this keeps up I might do that again. Or maybe to Chrome.
(I'm still on OSX.5.8).

Things usually go so well with Safari that I let my tabs grow to quite a number. No problem, until visiting an unfriendly web site that gives the spinning beach ball of frustration. Force quitting is the only solution, but there go all those tabs, some I've had open for days or weeks.
Is there a workaround that allows one to save the previous session, including tabs upon quitting Safari (to include Force Quit)?

For the last 3 days I will be in an application (safari 4,actually) and the app will give me the beachball. I have seen the beachball many times in safari 4 so I would just force quit the app. Well in doing that its still shown with the blue dot under it on the dock, aswell as in the force quit menu. I go to open another app (say iphoto or firefox) and I also get the beachball, and I try to forcequit the app, and it will not force quit. Only way to cure it is to manually restart my macbook pro. (I have a unibody 2.4 macbook pro btw_). I have repaired permissions. Deleted and reinstalled safari and ran weekly/monthly scripts via cocktail.

For the past couple of weeks we have had a problem with itunes causing the computer (an iMac running OS X 10.5.5) to freeze and we can't even do a forced quit, but must turn off the machine manually. This seems to happen specifically when we are in the itunes store, not just working with the playlist. The computer has also frozen when in safari - the last time when we were trying to copy a page into Word. We thought it might be a wireless connectivity problem, but I have switched to an ethernet connection and still have the same problem happening.

How do I close an application that won't quit and doesn't show up in the force quit dialogue box? I was trying to open Printer Pro but it doesn't show up in the finder and when I tried to put it in the trash it says it can't throw it away because it's open. The forced quit dialogue box does not list it as open. What do I do?
That was supposed to be APPLICATION

I have the latest update for Safari on my MacBook Pro 17" (running the latest Lion update). Lately, the command-Q (quit) option under the File menu is greyed out/not available. I tried using the Quit function from the dock icon for Safari--no good, either. I have to Force Quit in order to close Safari.

Say an app has crashed and I then bring up the force quit dialog. I then select the app I want to kill, and press the force quit button. Now as the little popup that says "Are you sure you want to force quit" is coming down, my machine freezes. This has happened 3 times exactly the same way. Other than that, the machine is smooth as clockwork. I'm kinda thinking there is some sort of GFX card bug or something?

I'm getting rather panicky now. I was trying to connect to a network drive on my MacBook when I got a beachball. Nothing would work, not even force quit would come up. So I held down the power button until it went off, and then switched it back on again. It got as far a blank blue screen but no further. I tried it again and this time it didn't get past the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. So I took the battery out, unplugged from the mains and held the power button down for over 10 seconds. Then held down Command Alt P R to reset the PRAM. That didn't solve anything. This is the first reboot since some security updates on Saturday past. I'm running Leopard and it's an oldish Macbook, Core 2 Duo with 2 x 2 GB sticks of RAM.

Ive had my macbook pro since August and I have had problems with it in the past. This time however (this has been happening for almost a week) my computer has been very slow and unresponsive. Programs quit due to "errors" and i have to force quit everything. Safari doesnt work either. I have already backed up any files i need and would just like to try and fix this without ANOTHER trip to the apple store.

I have an old "vintage" Macbook with Tiger as my OS. I have all sorts of sleep issues with it, and recently after accidentally hitting the sleep button, I had to force quit the machine by holding down the power button because it was just (beachball) spinning when I tried to start it up again.
I went to start it up and I get the gray screen with the apple on it and the spinning "clock hands" this goes on until I get a darker screen without apple and more spinning. It stays there. We've tried a host of solutions including the resetting through battery removal, we've tried to "archive and reinstall", etc.

I pressed the play button (F8) on my mac book pro yesterday. Iphoto began playing a fullscreen slideshow that I was not able to stop by any means. I hit the key for force quit and it appeared on the screen but was not able to be clicked. I pressed the power button for 5 seconds then for the first time ever on macbook pro that was so expensive.. Are there people switching back to snow leopard, which is less iPaddy?

I am running Mac OSX 10.7.3 and I recently been having issues shutting down my computer with mail running. Sometimes it takes 2-3 mins for it to shut mail down and other times it says it couldn't shut down because of the mail app. Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling Lion?

Ive ran multiple different types of terminal searches for this "flashback" Trojan worm/virus that's going around. I've also searched for com.apple.systempreference.plist and it's not in there at all. I've done safe mode and everything else. I do not have a wallpaper HD lite, I am OUT of options, and I really don't want to have to re install Lion. Can someone PLEASE tell me something, other than those options?

I purchased a new IMac Intel version and I am having a problem with AOL. I have always had a problem with AOL and my Macs (now on number 3). In the past, if I left AOL running it would not allow the Macs to close down without Force Quitting from AOL and AOL would not quit normally. With the new Mac, if I use AOL it won't quit and when I Force Quit it disconnects the Mac from the internet and I have to restart. As I live in Antigua both Apple and AOL have been useless at trying to solve the problem.
