MacBook Pro :: Stop Random Shut Downs On It?
Apr 4, 2012
15" MacBook Pro - late 2007Mac OS 10.7.32.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo4 GB ramNVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 128 MB I've been getting random shut downs for several weeks. It basically is like a power failure: straight to black, no warning, no reboot. Sometimes a very short beep/buzz occurs right as it dies. It seems to happen when I'm moving, holding, or have my hands resting on the computer, but not always. I've done the SMC and PRAM resets. I did a clean install of Lion. I just put in a new battery. I'm starting to think that it has to be the motherboard.

I have a mid-2011 IMac running Lion 10.7.3. From the time I got it, last Sept., it has said it has a problem and has to shut-down and restart. Then a long report appears with all the codes and apps. listed to be sent to Apple. This was first happening ever 3-4 wee, then every 2-3 weeks, and lately I had 2 in one day. I always add in the comments section that I would like to know what is going on, but never get any feedback, can't read the code well enough, but CPU 2 seems to show up. aI talked to Applecare last week and got a problem munber. The rep. says those reports are used by tech services to see what changes to make, and not tied to individual machines. I am concerned that I may have a lemon that will give out after my Applecare expires. I'm not anxious for a replacement or having the screen pulled to get inside to repair it. I've got it set up too well to risk it.Â

My MBP has this issue every once in a while where I have to hold the power button and force shut down. Randomly the volume keys/brightness etc. stop working and i can't open apps or shut it down normally. Everything still works though (can still function in open applications) Anyone know what the problem is? It fixes when I force reset.

I have a 2008 iMac running OSX 10.6.5, 2.66Ghz Intel, 2 gig ram. I'm getting random blue screen crashes at least weekly. I don't have any hardware connected except an iomega external hd for Time Machine (and of course a keyboard and mouse). I'm never doing anything exceptional when it crashes. Usually just internet browsing (Chrome) or word processing (NeoOffice). The screen just suddenly goes gray/blue and I have to force it to shut down with the power switch.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard at the same time I installed Windows 7 (Boot Camp) and purchased the external hd. The problems started around that time. I have since wiped the disk and reinstalled both OSs, but am still facing the same problem.

I own a MacPro, running OS X 10.6.8. Several weeks ago it began to restart on its own, right after I turned it on. I ignored the issue and continued to work with it for several weeks.  Suddenly yesterday it began to behave funky again, to the point where I cannot work with it at all. I turned on the computer, and few minutes later, it restarted on its own for several times. The point where it restarts is random, sometime in the sing in section (when you place the password) or while I work on some program. I was trying to run DiskWarrior, and the machine restarted on its own again!Â
I am also using part of this Mac as a PC, so I tried restarting on PC to see if its only on the MAC side, but it didn't make it through, it restart again before the windows icon appeared. Then after several restarts on the Mac side, an error message appeared, on the grey screen before the apple icon appears. It is all writen in code and it says something like: panic (cpu 0 caller 8x2aaf41): Machine check at .... (the picture is in my iPod but I don't know how to bring it into my computer). By searching this forum, I read I could try by reseting the PRAM and NVRAM, but I wonder what the consequences are when doing this. And if I try reinstalling the software, would I still be able to keep the PC side intact? Cause I still need to access the PC side as it is? I was able to run a backup for the Mac yesterday, but I couldn't for the PC. Â

I was just in my room minding my own business and I heard my iMac "shut down" but nothing happened, and I'm still able to use it like normal as I type this message. It seemed to quiet down my fans though, they are still running but much quieter so I guess in a way its a good thing.I'm just curious as to what happened here.

Whenever I accidentally let the power drain on my aluminum macbook, which cause me to boot up from where I left off, everything works fine except all of my trackpad gestures stop working completely. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Is my only option restarting my computer or is there some way to reset it (without losing my preferences)?

When I turn on my Powerbook G4 (1.5 GHz) 15" a little Earth icon flashes about 15x. Then a small question mark flashes followed by the Mac smiley face icon. They alternate flashing about a dozen times or so. My computer then goes to the grey-on-grey Apple logo screen, then to the password login screen. I enter password and successfully get to my desktop, HOWEVER:
(1)the font on my menu bar seems to have changed. No big deal?
(2)The menu bar is incomplete as I'm missing my internet signal indicator
(3)My dock is completely gone. Cannot find it anywhere.
(4)I have desktop icons but cannot left click on any of them. When I do I just get a long blank white colored rectangle. When I roll cursor over it it turns blue. Still blank though!
(5)This is the same with the menu bar. When I click on anything (Finder, File, Edit, View, etc) the drop down menu is just blank empty space

I am getting a pop up "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?".
The one we get, if pressed the power button to switch it off?. The problem is not consistent and mostly I get if left inactive for some time(random). I have run the hardware test(installer DVD and pressing D) without any issue found.

I recently installed a VPN.
The performance through the VPN is badly affected by the Airport scanning regularly; often the VPN hangs.
I have deleted the unnecessary wireless networks listed in the Advanced button under Network Preferences. However, the problem persists.
Can you advise how to either stop the scanning or stop it interfering with Internet connection?

I keep hearing this random sound while using my new MBP. Sounds like a guitar chord being strummed but it's very, very brief. It's happened while in Firefox, iMovie, Findit, etc. What is it?

I just received my new MacBook Pro (2.4GHz) to replace my older CD Macbook Pro from 2006 which was suffering fan problems.
My new MBP is great and faster, with the exception of a really annoying "popping" sound that is coming from the left hand side of the laptop. It's sporadic and might happen every few minutes, or every 30 sec. or varying lengths of time in-between "pops."
I searched the forum hear and didn't come up with virtually anything at all, but the Apple Support Discussions had several threads on the topic, most pointing to the Hard Drive and the sound possibly coming from the heads parking on the disk.
Could anyone offer any advice on the subject? I just got this brand new MBP from AppleCare and really don't want to have to go through all the work on getting another replacement if this sound is normal.

This problem suddenly started today. I had my Mac Book on and it suddenly turned off, went to black, and automatically rebooted. After less than a minute, it repeated this again and again. There was a "click" heard most of the time when the screen when to black. I tried running the laptop with only AC, and then only battery.

I've got one of the original Alu MBs and since SL its started an annoying habit. A lot of the time, whether on battery or power, instead of just going to sleep, it goes in to hibernate mode. It doesn't matter how long the machine is left for before trying to wake, or how much battery is remaining. I seem to remember this was a problem with the machine just after launch as well, but OS X updates fixed the problem. Now its back.

So I recently purchased one of the discontinued unibody MBPs from my local Apple reseller, got the warranty reset to the proper date, etc etc. However, I have had this thing randomly, without warning, restart on me. There's no real rhyme nor reason to these restarts. It has happened twice now. Once while I was opening World of Warcraft and another just while the computer was sitting idle. The only warning sign is that my USB mouse goes all wonky and jumps around then BAM restart. Currently I'm running the Apple Hardware Test on it and typing this from my iMac across the room, it hasn't failed anything yet, but then again it's only been running for a few minutes. Does anyone else know of a possible fix? Is this something I'm going to have to ship off for repairs? I'm a little unhappy that one of my speakers sounds as though it is failing as well, so I should probably just buck up and send it off anyway while it's still under warranty. Ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came up with nothing. I performed the extended test so as to be certain, no failures.

On the MacBook Pro I'm using, every once in a while I hear the sound effect that plays when you delete something...I'm not sure what it's called (a sort of poofing noise). It goes away when I uncheck "Play user interface sound effects" in preferences, so I'm guessing it's not a bug. Any way to check what it's coming from? I have Firefox open almost all the time, but other applications change and the sound doesn't go away.

My screen periodically starts flashing and getting huge white lines that run down the screen when I play games (only have crysis maximum edition) but then it stops and goes back to normal. Ive noticed that it doesnt happen all the time, and not at certain moments in the game (i.e. happens at one point but doesnt happen again at that same point a different time) and it will stop if i go and look only at a wall. Is this normal or is my MBP F'd?

I am a new mac user and a sound similar to the "Frog" sound effect keeps playing at random times and with no apparent reason. It just plays and at different times...Sometimes it's every 20 seconds, sometimes more or less. I disabled the sound in System Preferences and it kept playing. I don't know what else to do since i'm new with mac... It's sounding right now, and the only application i have open is safari obviously, and the battery is charging.

I got a new macbook pro a week ago. The first time I shut the machine down it experienced a kernel panic right after I selected to shut down the computer. Programs randomly crash while I am using the computer. The apple store said that crashes are most likely due to CS3 because it was not properly updated for the system, so they installed the CS3 updates. The next time I used the machine after installing CS3 updates, it experienced another kernel panic upon shut down. I would like to hear about known issues with the Summer 09 macbooks. I am trying to determine if this is a hardware, software, or an OS issue.
