MacBook Pro :: Shared Time Machine And Duplicated Files

Apr 2, 2012

I have a new MBP (running Lion) and an older MacBook (running Leopard).  I'd like both to run Time Machine to a shared external hard drive which I think I've worked out.  My question is whether or not TM will store duplicate versions of the same files (particularly photos, videos, etc.) on the external hard drive, thus using up the EHD capacity more quickly, or will one file be saved and just recognized as being on both computers by TM.

Hardware :: AEBS & Time Machine Options - Shared Airport Drive Doesn't Show Up?

Feb 16, 2010

I've just bought the new Airport Extreme Base Station last night. I set up everything just fine. I've set up an external HD to the USB port and got it to work fine so far in terms of file sharing and reading and writing. I also have a dedicated Time Machine external HD attached to my MBP USB drive.Does Time Machine backup shared airport drives? This is a deal breaker for me. When I go into time machine after my latest backup, the shared airport drive doesn't show up .Am I missing something? Can time machine back up anything connected to the AEBS?

ITunes :: Downloaded And Encoded Mp3 Files - Getting Duplicated In It?

Feb 15, 2012

iTunes 10.5.3 (3). The last group of songs I downloaded and encoded to mp3 continue to duplicate and show up in itunes everytime I sync my iPhone or iPod. I keep the library stored on an external hard drive and always change "iTunes media folder location" to the EHD, which is also annoying. I've deleted the default folder in Lion but the songs keep showing up in m4a format. I then have to start all over. (tags, info etc.) This is the first time I've had this problem and I'd like it to stop.

Applications :: ITunes Duplicated Video Files And Hide Them

May 15, 2009

I tunes imported vid files that I had on my hd last year, now, I decided that I didn't want these in ITunes, so I deleted them from ITunes. I then burned all of these files to a DVD and then deleted them from my downloads folder where they were always kept. Today I noticed that deep within ITunes, there is a folder called ITunes music and in that folder there is a sub folder called movies, where I discovered duplicates of the vid files I had previously deleted from my downloads folder which were imported by ITunes last year. I didn't know this could happen in ITunes!

ITunes For Mac :: Moved Library From PC To NAS - Duplicated Files In Album Folders

Aug 20, 2014

I recently moved my itunes library from PC to a NAS to use with my new Mac. With the exception of a couple hiccups everything was fine. I then asked iTunes to copy all the music to my ipod and convert the tracks to 256mb (I have re-ripped my cd collection as lossless and chosen the option to replace existing copies of the songs which were lossy).

I have 264GB of music in my iTunes library but when I looked at my NAS just now I saw 540GB of music backed up!! I then looked in one folder and saw every song had been duplicated so songs were named things like "Song.m4a" and "Song1.m4a", but this hasn't happened in every album folder - of course I have way too many to go through them individually.

How I can stop it from continuing and most importantly how to clear all the duplicates from the folders on my NAS so it only holds the 264GB of music that the iTunes library displays.

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic - Way To Transferred Old Files With Time Machine?

Nov 28, 2009

I just received a replacement computer for a defective machine. Its a brand new macbook pro. I transferred old files with time machine only to have the new machine resume a series of kernel panics that caused the replacement. The Genius Bar asked me to reload everything from scratch so as not to transfer corrupt files. I did so -- with the most up to date dmg files out there, and 4 days later had another kernel panic. I do not know what it means but have pasted it below.

MacBook Air :: How To Extract Individual Files From Time Machine Back Up

Jun 19, 2014

So two months ago my mac's internal hard disk had a problem, it was "ejecting" itself by itself. It was frozen. Problem: I was gonna do a backup the day it happened, so I didn't have a back up. I went to a centre of data recuperation. They managed to get a lot out of the internal hard disk and put it in a new external hard drive. Apple then replaced my SSD, and I restored (from the external hard drive) what had been recuperated back on my computer with a new SSD. Now I realise that a lot of things are missing - especially pictures- which is quite annoying. I do have a very old back up that I did with Time Machine on another external hard drive. My question is: how can I restore only the pictures from that back up? I can't go back on time machine because this is a new SSD, and I don't wanna restore everything from that back up as I have more data on my computer as it is now.

MacBook Pro :: After Restoring Files To Reformatted HDD / Use New Thunderbolt Drive For Time Machine

Jun 24, 2014

I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0).  I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.

I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0).  Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Won't Back Up And Files Won't Open When Double Clicked

Dec 11, 2014

I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.

Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.

Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.

I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files.  I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available.

OS X :: Time Machine Is Not Backing Up Certain Files?

Nov 16, 2008

i've been working on an important word document, word quit unexpectedly, document gone. luckily there was a copy of it in the microsoft user data.

but, my first reaction was, oh that's ok time machine would have backed it up. i go into time machine and it's not there. so i save the microsoft user data recovered file to a new file name in a documents folder. quit word. restart. do a time machine backup. it completes. but when i open up time machine, this document (and another one from 5 days ago) are not in ANY of the backups. and if i keep backing up, time machine will backup, but these files are not in any of the dates/times in time machine.

doesn't this defeat the purpose of time machine?

OS X :: Time Machine And System Files

May 31, 2009

I've been backing up everything including system files with Time Machine for quite some time now. The question I have is that when you exclude the System folder, and when prompted choose to exclude all system files, does it just not back up any more system files from that point forward and leave the system files already backed up on the TM drive, or when removing all system files does it go back and remove all occurrences from your TM drive thus making more space available for your backups? So when choosing to remove all system files and if it does not remove existing backups of those files which files/folders would those be that you could manually remove?

OS X :: How To Delete All Files In Time Machine...

Mar 4, 2010

I did a search for this before making my post, and I couldn't find anything that would work.

I'm in the middle of doing my final year uni project (a documentary using final cut pro) and I'm fast running out of hard drive space and thought I'd use the external HD I've been using for my Time Machine backups, but when I simply dragged the folder to the trash it wouldn't let me delete it, after hours of waiting. So I sent it all back to the HD from the trash. I tried the disk utility thing and it still wouldn't let me. I wasn't sure if I should select the actual hard drive, or the time machine logo, then which type of delete to choose...

Mac Pro :: Using Time Machine Backup - Transferring Files

Aug 6, 2009

So my Mac Pro just had a bunch of hardware replaced by Apple geniuses. But all my preferences are all screwy, so I made a new admin account, but that just made even more preference issues when I transferred files from my old admin account. However, while my Mac Pro was being fixed, I bought a new MacBook Pro and got it all up and running with all my software and files. It would take me a whole day to reinstall OSX and each program individually all over again on my Mac Pro, but I have a Time Machine back up from my MacBook Pro which I could install right off the bat on my Mac Pro. Is that possible? What issues would there be? Anyone else done it?
