OS X Mavericks :: Erase Old Time Machine Backup Files
Aug 28, 2014I inherited an old external hard drive that I would like to use with Time Machine on a computer. However, the drive was used as a backup with Time Machine on another computer that has since been wiped clean and is no longer available. Unfortunately, the external drive still has the old TM backup files from the old computer. I've found that I cannot simply delete the backup files from the external drive. Â
How can I delete the TM backup files from the external drive? Will erasing via Disk Utility handles this?

Feb 11, 2012I thought I could use a 1TB External drive to back up my 320GB startup disk, and use the rest of the empty 680GB for storage. However, Time Machine started taking up 600GB of spaceon the External drive! I was like "What the heck!?" So I put unwanted Time Machine Backups in the trash and emptied it. Nothing, they're stuck there now.Â
I'm planning on wiping the disk clean and starting over, but for future reference is there a proper way to delete Time Machine Backups? Surely there must be; (I mean, who would have known Time Machine would take up MORE SPACE than the drive it's backing up in the first place?

Apr 13, 2010I recently had a problem with bootcamp so I tried to use time machine to backup my Macbook Pro. However it made an attempt to erase my HD so I immediately pulled out the cables and shutdown the program. However my disk is now "not readable by this computer" I have attempted a rebuild with diskwarrior but with no success. How to get my disk working again without having to format it?

Aug 25, 2014I recently did a complete erase of my hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. I chose to start clean rather than use any Time Machine back-ups. I used the same external hard drive for my new Time Machine back-ups. Now I cannot open any back-ups/items prior to the re-install via Time Machine. They are listed along the right hand sidebar in Time Machine (star wars view) but will not open when clicked on.Â
Some files I can access if I go to the actual backup folder - ex a Pages doc BUT ff I try to open the iPhoto library from the back-up folders stored on the external drive, I get the following error message -
I cannot open the iPhoto "package" to access individual photos from these back-ups.Â
So - how can I get Time Machine to allow access to the pre-install back-ups??Â

OS X :: Time Machine Fail To Start?
Aug 13, 2009It does not start the backup process when scheduled time passed.
symptoms:
1.Example: TM says Next Backup: Today, 10:21 AM, the backup did not start, the time changed to the next bacup schedule time 11:20. No other message. When I look at the log, there are no activity at all.
2. I can request a backup "Backup Now", it backs up normaly. It updates the time for the next schedule backup.
3. For some unknow reason the TM may do a backup and schedule the next backup, but when the time due for the next backup, it will not start the job, it just reschedule the next back up time.
4. The TM disk icon will not stay as the blue time machine icon. It switch to the regular yellow disk icon.
OS X :: Start Time Machine From Scratch?
Sep 26, 2009Over the past week i have been having big problems with my Time Machine backup drive. My backup drive is an Iomega Helium 500GB partioned as HFS+ Journaled.
I usually backup every two days so i plugged into my macbook pro on wednesday night. I left it for about 15 minutes and came back expecting the backup to be done. Instead I found it was deleting old backups? I thought this was odd as the drive had 150 or so GB free and i only had a few for songs and documents since my last backup on monday. After another 15 minutes i returned to find it was backing up 120GB! I had no idea where it had come up with that insane amount of data. so i checked my mac's hard drive space to find i had 236GB free just like it has been around that for a few weeks. I let it back up and unplugged it later that night. I forgot to backup on friday so i plugged it in this morning. It was deleting old backups again and backing up a further 140GB!
I have now come to the conclusion that i should wipe the drive and start again.
How can I do this?

Sep 18, 2010My Time Machine will not start at all (for restoring). No errors in the Console. I tried reinstalled it with Pacifist. I repaired the permissions. I tried delete all prefs (as I don't know the exact plist for this app.) and caches.
It's working when I log in to another account.

OS X :: Time Machine Crashed Computer Now It Won't Start Up?
Feb 21, 2009My roommate just lost his data, so I realized I needed to back up. I plugged in an external hard drive (it was an internal that we put into casing bought from OWC, if that matters). I wasn't thinking about Time Machine but it displayed a message, so I said yes, backup onto the hard drive. Then while it was backing up I was just reading a document, the machine crashed. I swiveled my desk to get something and this caused the external hard drive to fall, for a second it was dangling from the USB. (I'm not sure if that's relevant but.)
I first restart (held down the power button), since nothing was happening. At that point the hard drive was making a weird rhythmic clicking sound. Then it wouldn't start up! I tried this twice. Blank gray screen. I reset the PRAM (was that a bad idea?) and when it started again, I get a folder icon with a blinking question mark, over a gray background. Then I freaked out because this was what happened to my roommate, so I haven't touched the computer since.
What could have gone wrong? What to do now? (Local help centers only open on Monday..) Is it worth it to take a train for an hour to go to an apple store right now?

Mar 2, 2008I keep my time machine HD unplugged from my laptop to reduce the clutter, when i plug it in, time machine starts automatically backing up. It says "Preparing Backup..." and it stays like that for a while. I've had it like that for about 15 minutes.

Nov 16, 2008i've been working on an important word document, word quit unexpectedly, document gone. luckily there was a copy of it in the microsoft user data.
but, my first reaction was, oh that's ok time machine would have backed it up. i go into time machine and it's not there. so i save the microsoft user data recovered file to a new file name in a documents folder. quit word. restart. do a time machine backup. it completes. but when i open up time machine, this document (and another one from 5 days ago) are not in ANY of the backups. and if i keep backing up, time machine will backup, but these files are not in any of the dates/times in time machine.
doesn't this defeat the purpose of time machine?

May 31, 2009I've been backing up everything including system files with Time Machine for quite some time now. The question I have is that when you exclude the System folder, and when prompted choose to exclude all system files, does it just not back up any more system files from that point forward and leave the system files already backed up on the TM drive, or when removing all system files does it go back and remove all occurrences from your TM drive thus making more space available for your backups? So when choosing to remove all system files and if it does not remove existing backups of those files which files/folders would those be that you could manually remove?

But all my preferences are all screwy, so I made a new admin account, but that just made even more preference issues when I transferred files from my old admin account. However, while my Mac Pro was being fixed, I bought a new MacBook Pro and got it all up and running with all my software and files. It would take me a whole day to reinstall OSX and each program individually all over again on my Mac Pro, but I have a Time Machine back up from my MacBook Pro which I could install right off the bat on my Mac Pro. Is that possible? What issues would there be? Anyone else done it?

Sep 18, 2009I received my new 24" iMac a few days ago, and have spent the last few days setting it up and getting acquainted with the new features.
I purchased a MyBook Studio 1TB drive to use with Time Machine, as it sounded like a good way to keep everything backed up.
Everything seemed to be working well, until I started flicking through some of my folders in TM. I noticed that the files I had added an hour or so earlier hadn't backed up. I had just recently set an exclusion on a single folder, so decided to try removing it. TM then backed a few GB of files up.
I decided to add some test files to a folder, and run TM again. Again, it didn't back the new files up.
