MacBook Pro :: Restoring OS X Mavericks From Time Capsule After Boot Drive Failure?
Sep 5, 2014
I've had my TIme Capsule for a few years now. Last year I decided to self upgrade the internal HDD to 3TB to actually fit back-ups from my two mac's at home. On my MBP the boot drive failed. It's unfixable unfortunately. how to restore full system on a new HDD on my MacBookPro from TimeCapsule, after boot drive failure?
how to connect the laptop with clean/ empty HDD to MBP and make it boot and install it all from Time Capsule. Moreover, I am not sure how to connect it to Time Capsule, so that it doesn't take 3 days to restore. There is both an ethernet port as well as USB 2.0 one too.
That 'old' boot driveis still barely running, I wanted to hand copy at least my iPhoto Library of 110GB in size, but it just keeps crashing, as the file is so big. I mean, I should have it all back-ed up on TimeCapsule,

I just bought the new MBA and had a MacBook Pro. I completed 1 last backup from the MBP via Time Capsule. I used Migration Assistant on the MBA and followed the instructions.
Unfortunately, I did it wirelessly so it took about 17 hours. Applications transferred such as Office 2011 for Mac, VMWare Fusion, Handbrake, etc. No photos or iTunes music transferred, unless I can't find them somewhere.

I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?

Just invested in a TC as my MBP had to go in for repair. Got it all set up and backed up, and was working great.
However, having got the MBP back with new logic board, its stopped working.
Backups just fail, and if I open Time Machine, it doesn't see the back ups made before the MBP went for repair.
The Time Capsule shows up in the finder OK, as being connected, and with the .sparsebundle file visible. It also shows up in Airtport Utility OK.

I store all of my photographs on an external hard drive which I backup with my Time Capsule. My external HD crashed and I need to restore the new external hard drive with the files from the Time Capsule. When I open Time Machine I get an error message saying to connect to a current Time Machine backup disk.

I just returned a 1 TB Time Capsule I bought a few weeks ago. Before I did that I archived it. It only had Time Machine backups for two laptops. I am getting a 2 TB Time Capsule in the next couple days. Can I copy those archived Time Machine backups to the new Time Capsule and pick up where I left off with Time Machine backups?

Macbook Pro won't boot. Symptoms preceding failure included failure to open Firefox. When trying to cold boot I can get as far as the start-up sound, the Apple logo, and the spinning whieel (spins for a bit but not for very long) and then major failure. Not running Liom.

I replaced my beloved 2009 Mac Pro Nehalem with a brand new iMac 27" with Core i7@3.5 Ghz, 24 GB Ram, GeForce GTX 780M and a 3TB Fusion Drive.Big problem: the boot time is 2 min and 48 seconds, yes 168 seconds.I used Migration assistant to configure this machine from my last MacPro TimeMachine backup.
Apart from boot time, the iMac works fine and the disk tests with Blackmagic show a writing speed of 300 mb/s and a reading speed of 580 mb/s.. Nothing else seems wrong, but the boot time is terrible.

I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.
I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.

Recently my iCloud account was hacked and all my Contacts were erased. This also caused all my Contacts on my iPhone and iMac to be erased as well. I can restore my Contacts from a Time Machine Back up to my iMac "Address Book", however as soon as I connect back to iCloud, all the contacts are erased. I tried to restore my iPhone from an earlier iPhone backup which restored everything, as far as I know, except the Contacts. I don't have a huge number of contacts or groups, so I don't care if the group information is lost. There seems to be some conflicting information on how to do this correctly, so I'm asking what the current best practice is to restore all my contacts from a Time Machine Backup to iCloud.

I have a single boot disk with just the apps on, and 2 disks in a software mirrored RAID in which I keep all the important stuff. Its just occurred to me, if the boot drive fails won't the software RAID be destroyed as well?Or will it be easy to recover the data off one of the previously RAID1 disks, when the new boot drive is installed?

I am aware there are others threads of my problem however they date back years ago and after trying their solutions it still does not work.
After using Time Machine to restore my hard drive from a backup, I can't get past the white loading screen with apple logo after system restart during restore process. Ive gone into disk utility and repaired hard drive - it's fine. So I know this is a software glitch. I've also tried resetting SMC & PRAM (whatever those mean). No success and i cannot get past the white loading screen.
I'm running Mavericks (latest) on a late 2009 iMac

I am using a Macbook Pro Retina with a 750GB SSD drive. I backup using Time Capsule.
I am planning to use an external USB drive to store all of my photos in RAW format. Is it possible for me to set up Time Machine so that I backup the MBP and my external USB drive to the Time Capsule?

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.
When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?
4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

Right now I have an i5 MacBook Pro with a 320 GB hard drive. I want to move that hard drive to my Time Capsule via a USB enclosure and use a 60 GB OCZ SSD hard drive in my MacBook. Do you think this is a good idea speed-wise? Also, does anyone have any experience with using iTunes or viewing videos with a hard drive plugged into a Time Capsule that's a few rooms away? I'm probably only going to use the wireless hard drive to listen to music and maybe move files to it once in a while. Would that be too slow? I would unplug it from the Time Capsule and plug it into my Mac to transfer big files or install software that's on the external drive.

My Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive. About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive. What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive. Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem. If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.

I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

I have a 500GB Time Capsule, and very slowly my drive is filling up, and that's only with one Mac (I think there's about 25GB left - and no other stuff is on it except for the TM backup). I was wondering if there was a way to add an external drive into the Time Capsule via USB and extend the overall capacity, as I only seem to be able to choose it as a separate backup location. Obviously I don't want to have to buy a bigger USB HD when I'm running low on space. Also, I'm gonna be getting an iMac (As soon as Apple decides to announce new ones!)

Epson 4800 print perfectly on direct USB connection to MacBook Pro with the 9.17 Epson driver, but when connected to USB port on the Time Capsule, there is red sign and notice that the printer is unconnected. Both the port of the Time Capsule and the cabel are OK, as I print with them to Epson SP R800 without any issue...
Time Capsule is correctly recognised on the local WiFi and set with correct password. USB port is working for other printers correctly. Just the 4800 is not recognised. I tried everything (deleting the printer and reseting all printers too)...

I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
