I just bought the new MBA and had a MacBook Pro. I completed 1 last backup from the MBP via Time Capsule. I used Migration Assistant on the MBA and followed the instructions.
Unfortunately, I did it wirelessly so it took about 17 hours. Applications transferred such as Office 2011 for Mac, VMWare Fusion, Handbrake, etc. No photos or iTunes music transferred, unless I can't find them somewhere.
I've had my TIme Capsule for a few years now. Last year I decided to self upgrade the internal HDD to 3TB to actually fit back-ups from my two mac's at home. On my MBP the boot drive failed. That 'old' boot driveis still barely running, I wanted to hand copy at least my iPhoto Library of 110GB in size, but it just keeps crashing, as the file is so big. I mean, I should have it all back-ed up on TimeCapsule,

I just returned a 1 TB Time Capsule I bought a few weeks ago. Before I did that I archived it. It only had Time Machine backups for two laptops. I am getting a 2 TB Time Capsule in the next couple days. Can I copy those archived Time Machine backups to the new Time Capsule and pick up where I left off with Time Machine backups?

I have no luck restoring the Snow Leopard backups. My question is, how would I recover these backups without the Snow Leopard install disk? Is it possible or do I need to do a fresh install, upgrade then enter time machine via the OS itself?
My old 2006 MBP finally decided to go to the after life (logicboard) The only way i can get into my files is by starting my MBP through safe mode. While in safe mode can I connect my MBP to my time capsule and do a manual back of all my files. So when I do get my new Mac I can restore from it?

What I want to do is swap the 160GB HDD currently in the MBP into the Mini and then install the 500GB HDD into the MBP and do a backup via TimeMachine with Time Capsule. Would doing that cause any problems when the Mini/MBP backup to the TC?

I won't be doing this for a very long time, but I am wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are of getting a brand new Mac and either:
a.) Restoring to a Time Machine backup from a four year-old Mac that is showing its age.
OR
b.) Setting it up as a new Mac and manually transferring over all media, data, and applications.
If I restore it to a Time Machine backup, will it perform about as well as the four year-old Mac I'll be restoring it to (not including hardware advantages)? Or would it just be better to set it up as a new Mac and manually transfer everything over?
So my old macbook pro got damaged and I had a best buy extended warranty, they did a 100% backup of my hard drive, including system folders, and just gave me a new computer with the external hard drive. Now, they didn't do a Time Machine backup, so I just have an external harddrive with everything on it, Library, my home foler, etc. Is there any way I can 100% restore my new macbook from this? I opened migration assistant and selected restore from another disk but it isnt finding the external hard drive (but finder does find it.)
Just got my new MBP which I want to migrate my old one too. Is it better to ethernet the computers up and use the migration assistant or use my last time capsule back up? Or is there no difference?

I am trying to restore my old system from my other harddrive onto this new bigger harddrive. I have a Time Machine backup and I booted my Mac OS X disc, but when I go to Utilities -> Restore from Time Machine backup and go through the menus I am stuck at "searching for discs" ... it's really starting to irritate me. Can I just bust out the Terminal and

Okay I've had it with VMware Fusion 3, tried Parallels. The graphics capabilities are poor for my standard of work (we use 3DS Max and Maya for intensive modelling during studies). I know my graphics card is quite outdated (ATI X1600) but a lot of the graphics-intensive apps on the Mac side run very smooth.
So I'm going down the Boot Camp route since graphics-wise, it'll use the actual X1600 instead of some virtual one. It's telling me that I need to reformat into Mac OS Journaled or something, and some basic research tells me the only way to achieve this is a fresh install.
My question is, if I perform a Time machine backup onto my external drive, will it restore the applications/settings/files completely how they were, after I reinstall OS X?
I'm having issues restoring from a time machine back-up. My old system was running 10.6, and I am using 10.5 install discs. I've tried it from various backups and I always get a 'you need to restart your computer' message upon booting up. I've now given up and just re-install 10.6 a fresh. I'm fairly confident restoring my music and documents wont be a problem, but will I be able to just drag and drop my apps onto my HDD? Do I need to copy the library folder across too, or is it just not possible and I'll have to start a fresh?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did something with my iphoto and when I went to look at my pics they were all gone except the black screen had white outlines of every pic but I couldn't see the pictures. It wanted to build my thumbnail and for whatever reason I didn't choose yes. I think I should have. So, I thought time machine would pull all those photos back. I restored from earlier in the day when it was fine. I had about 4000 photos and after restore I ended up with over 40000 photos. It had put all the clipart and all kinds of photos in there from programs.
Also it duplicated every picture I had at least 3 times. I did go in a delete all the clipart pics. Now I have about 35000 pics. The photos now are not all large size when I click on them. A lot of them are really small when I try to open them. I can't even think about going through all of those pics individually. I thought the Time Machine would restore back to what it was previously with my 4000 or so pics. I'm running iphoto 6 so I can't see the pics when I go into the Finder.
I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.
I have a MacBook Air and a Time Capsule - both from november 2011.Using Time Machine is givning me som problems.It works fine for some days, an is backing up as planned.But at least 5 times since I got the Time Capsule, Time Machine is asking to make a full Backup, and when I look in Time Machine, it says that there is no "old backup". It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer.Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?
When I was setting up the MBP, I opted to restore from a Time Machine backup and expected everything to go off without a hitch.
When I opened iTunes though, everything was blank -- no songs or videos were listed at all. My playlists were still there though but also blank.
When I checked my Music folder in Finder, everything was still there so I tried manually adding one mp3 to see if it would show up on iTunes. iTunes just played the mp3 but it still wouldn't show up in the Music list.
I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

I started my backup over 24 hours ago and after it completed its 130GB backup, it has now continued backing up endlessly incrementing the xxGB of xxGB without end. I stopped the backup and it then began at 140.9MB to backup. Once it reached 149.9MB it continued; displaying 149.9 MB of 149.9 MB. It is currently at 502.4 MB of 502.4 MB. I am using Snow Leopard. Has anyone seen this happen before? Or know how to resolve?

After using Time Machine to restore my hard drive from a backup, I can't get past the white loading screen with apple logo after system restart during restore process. Ive gone into disk utility and repaired hard drive - it's fine. So I know this is a software glitch. I've also tried resetting SMC & PRAM (whatever those mean). No success and i cannot get past the white loading screen.
I'm running Mavericks (latest) on a late 2009 iMac
How would I actually go about go backing up the Time Capsule itself, to an external drive?
