Printer is on and connected wirelessly. Macbook Pro recently upgraded to OS X 10.10.1. Printer utilities application on mac will not load either. Is there a patch or driver that needs to be installed?Â

Prepared for anything
Back in the late 80s, Apple began bundling PPD files for various PostScript printers with its System Software. The files identified features specific to each model, making it simple for users to take full advantage of each model. However, as the consumer market for printers expanded, expensive PostScript licensing was left behind for simpler and cheaper alternatives that relied on custom driver software unique to each printer manufacturer.
Microsoft began installing lots of third party printer drivers with the installation of Windows to make it simpler for users to install their printer without needing to obtain printer software themselves, a practice Apple also adopted. However, as printer manufacturers have expanded their printer software offerings to differentiate their hardware with special software features such as ink management and other add on utilities, the size of driver software has expanded rapidly.
Additionally, printer drivers are being updated more frequently and new printer models are appearing quickly enough to make it hard for operating system releases to stay current. Both Apple and Microsoft now support the ability of printer installation software to search for new or updated drivers online; Leopard began handling updates for HP drivers in 2007.
Just in time downloads
With the release of Snow Leopard this spring, Apple will put an end to the default installation of tons of drivers, according to people familiar with the latest test releases of the software. Instead, it will only install a select subset of drivers, including support for any currently attached printers or those that had been installed on the same Mac under previous versions of Mac OS X.
Sources say the system will review devices attached via USB and will scan the network for any printers advertised as available via Bonjour in order to create a short list of drivers that need to be installed. Any new printers that are attached after the installation of Snow Leopard will cause Software Update to check for drivers online.
This new policy will shave several unnecessary gigabytes from the Snow Leopard footprint, compounding the savings related to the new HFS+ file compression for compacting read only files and the compression and/or removal of unnecessary NIB files that will result in a greatly reduced size of applications on the new system.
Skinny new software
A similar practice has been put into place in GarageBand 09, which offers a series of free video instructions for learning how to play instruments. Rather than installing all of the videos by default, the new app allows users to download just the lessons they want, saving considerable disk space.
The same policy could also be applied to foreign language localization files and fonts, which currently consume lots of disk space but are only used by relatively small portions of the Mac OS X user base.
While software developers have historically relied on the luxury of constantly expanding, cheap hard drive space to ignore any need to be conservative in the amount of files loaded during installation, Apple's interest in deploying systems that use more expensive but faster SSD devices has resulted in new efforts to make Snow Leopard smaller and leaner than the system it replaces.
I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and at the end of the upgrade the printer drivers failed to load. I have since updated them myself (Epson BX305) but still get an error message 'rasteroescpll failed'. I have an IMac previously running 5.8.0 and now running 6.3.0.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that when selecting a file that is either an attachment in email or is in my finder, double clicking on it fails to load the associated application successfully. For example, selecting a pdf file results in the pdf reader logo appearing on the lower bar on the screen, bounces up and down as if it is doing something, but just continues to bounce. I have to force quit it, then go to my application folder to load reader directly, and from within the reader I can then go and select the file. This isn't an application specific issue (It does it with Excel, Word etc).Â
It only started recently. I'm using a MBP summer 2010 with Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything else seems to work.Â

I used to open my printer job as the item was printing and it would open with preview and then I could click on it and mail a copy to myself. I since installed the latest OSX Maverick and now my printer job opens with something else and I can't do anything with it except see what I am printing.

I have an old MacBook (not sure how old - it was a handed down to me by a friend). It was working fine until this past week. I downloaded a Yosemite update and One Drive and now it won't start!Â
Basically, when I power up it displays a 'No Entry' sign, spends around 20 minutes on the Apple logo and the 'creeping' progress bar, and then when it gets to the end opens OS X Utilities. I am trying to get in contact with Apple Support but I cannot do this without the serial number, which I cannot seem to locate in OS X Utility.Â

( so i could start off with a fresh empty computer) I used disk utility to clear all the memory on the drives, then i proceded to click on the tab that says "install lion osx". Everything started working, but it required me to type in my apple id to complete the instalation. When i logged in it said that my account doesnt have lion bought on it, and i need to use an account that does. I have no clue on how to get lion operating system onto my account without physically logging into my computer and buying it. But since my computer will only start up into the Mac os x utilities menu im not able to buy it.Â
I want to to a complte system restore
I did was restart and now I am stuck in OS X Utilities. I have 4 options:
1) Restore from Time Machine Backup.
2) Reinstall OS X.
3) Get Support online.
4) Disk Utility.Â
I tried disk utility first and it repaired a volume issue. I started the 1) restore from Time Machine backup. But it says "you will lose all info currently on the disk. Make sure you have backed up any items you want to keep."Â Should I continue?Â
I am hoping I will not lose pictures and my whole iTunes music catalog?Â

Choose the language and went on the main screen. I can see the utilities but it's grayed out can't click Reset Password on my main desktop its showing: Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer. About a week ago I purchased a 2007 Macbook off of Ebay. It arrived in the mail and i opened it only to find out he had not deleted a majority of his content. I looked up how to reset it and I did. It turned back on and displayed a Mac OS X Utilities page. I tried repairing my disk and that didn't work. I tried erasing it & after a couple of times that worked. Except I cannot get past that point. I have no Time Machine back up since I just purchased it. So I decided to try my last option and tried downloading Lion. It had asked for my Apple I.D. and I typed it in and once i clicked continue it said that "iTunes is temporarily unavailable" so I tried it again. Nothing. I even tried my mother's I.D. It still comes up saying that it is temporarily unavailable. I cannot access it. I'm stuck on that Utilities page and cannot access anything.

When ever I turn on my Mac it starts up in Utilities and gives me the 4 options to restore from Time Machine, reinstall OS X, contact Apple, or to open Disk Utility. Unfortunately, I had never made any Time Machine backups.
When I try to reinstall the OS it tells me that my hard drive is locked.
Disk Utility tells me that it can't repair Macintosh HD and to back up as many of my files as possible, reformat the disk, and to restore the backed up files.
Since I can't create a Time Machine back up, what can I do to save my files and such if I choose to reformat? Is there possibly a way to unlock my hard drive to reinstall the OS? I guess I'm asking what is the best corse of action in this scenario?

I've been having problems with iCal and would like to reinstall it using Utilities Disc 1 with the Superdrive. However, there only appears to be an option to reinstall ALL the bundled software, at which point I've aborted the reinstallation process. Sledgehammer to crack a nut! It's only iCal I'm having trouble with (e.g searches not clearing down, "today" button greys out.) If it's not possible to reinstall just iCal from disc, does anyone know a way to "repair or mend" a malfunctioning iCal?
