I'm trying to use the linux present in my intel mac book but the features are different from usual Linux.Where I can find a suitable book?

I was used to sit in a dark room at night so this was never an issue but lately I like having at least one light on. The problem is that when I do that and try to read something on the screen like a CNN article for example, I keep seeing my reflection and find myself moving left and right. I've tried to sit away from the light so its not directly behind me but sometimes that isn't always possible. I've also turned the brightness up to deal with it better but that's just a battery drain. My next macbook pro will surely be a matte screen as much as I love the black glass bezel. I used it for the first time at the Apple Store on a 17" and it was beautiful! So how do you deal with glare?
View 9 Replies View RelatedFigured I would share my recent apple genius bar apt. I went in due to a annoying line on my late 2009 15" macbook pro. Noticed it anytime that the screen was dark or dimmed. So I took in the MacBook pro and the genius look at the issue examined claimed he could not see a thing and made me feel rather stupid. Also pointed out that my mbp was making a crack sound ever since I installed my incase hard case. He sad that is too bad its the case nothing else. Funny thing is when it made the sound another genius look at the computer and said hey that's not normal. So he felt rather dumb, but continued on with his genius opinion that it was fine. He hand it back and says everything looks and works perfect sorry you wasted a trip. So I get the mbp back open it up in the apple store and go over and tell him the mark is right on the screen and he comes ever and says nope, so he calls over two more genius and they look at the screen and say yep write him up a repair order.
I smiled exactly when the guy said that from 30 seconds of observation. The other genius just walked away and ignored me after that happened. Today I went and picked up the MBP and they replaced the screen and found out they also replaced my super drive. I was not aware there was any issues with the drive at all, but they fixed it. Also my computer is under applecare if anyone was wondering. Trying this up has made me notice I need to work in sentence structure and I cant help to think how many people don't nag the genius after they get a deny from them. Its almost like a god complex they say no its a no. Repair bill came to just under 700 dollars and I was wondering if there is anymore issues with this MBP can I request a replacement system? My apple car expires in Nov.
I wanted to know how some of the rest of you who also have MacBook Air computers have been dealing with the fact that these machines only have one available USB Port. The single most inconvenient aspect of this is that, due to the mere 80GB hard drive I have installed in my MacBook Air, I use an external USB hard drive to store my iPhoto Library on and then when the time comes that I want to copy photos to my iPhoto Library, there's no way to do so because the SD card in my camera has to be plugged into my MacBook Air via USB.
I've found three solutions for dealing with this problem.
1) Copy the photos from the SD card to my MacBook Air's internal drive first, the disconnect the SD card and connect the external hard drive that has the iPhoto library on it, then copy the photos to the iPhoto library from the MacBook Air's internal drive.
2) Use a USB Hub to provide a means of connecting both the external USB Hard Drive as well as the SD card via a USB card reader. The one major problem with this approach is, to the best of my knowledge is, that it would have to be a powered USB Hub (in order to provide the power required to run two external hard drives - SD card & USB HD). This means that my ultra thin, uber-portable MacBook Air is now tethered to a power outlet.
3) The third and final method I've come across that I've most recently been playing with is through using the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi SD Card. This awesome little device, which Time Magazine has just listed as one of it's top 10 gadgets of the year, is truly incredible, you can read more about it here. This device would totally and completely solve my problem if it were not for one major detail, it's not compatible with RAW images (which for obvious reasons, I would much rather be using than JPEG). This one simple fact is most likely going to wind up being the deal breaker.
What is the best way to upgrade to SL from Leopard in terms of my Time Machine backups? Will Time machine try to restore from my backup and will this cause a problem? I am guessing that I should just manually copy files back across from my backup and then perform a new complete backup??
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am experienced in Excel VBA for the PC. I am finding my way around the Mac using Excel version 14.0.2. I am trying to rename files using Name oldpathname AS newpathname the files have .jpg and .pdf extensions. The files show up in Finder with and without the extension in the file name. I assume I will have to specify the entire file name including the extension. I am unsure what it means when I see files with and without the extensions in their names. On another but related subject, I have discovered the 31 character limit (truncated file names) in names as returned by the dir function. Does Name oldpathname as newpathname have the same problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook 2007 with a disc drive issue. I can put a cd or dvd in the drive, and it accepts it and spins it, but nothing is coming up on the desktop. And i cannot eject the disc either with the eject button or the manual ways i've read about (holding down the trackpad button during startup, the credit card method, etc.)Â I've restarted several time and I've attempted reseeting the power management. no change. Â
I should also state that this is a drive that i have recently installed. the old one was bunk, and I have replaced it with another used one. However, it was working properly when I installed it. I have since having this current issue, gone back in a made sure everything is connected properly. Â Under the system profile it shows under ATA that no ATA device is present, and a similar message is showing under disc burning. Â

So I have a lot of USB devices plugged into a powered hub and I have a Dell 2408WFP monitor with USB ports.
Often when I awake from sleep the devices plugged into the powered USB hub that's plugged into the 2408WFP which in turn is plugged into my computer are not present until a reboot of the computer.
I just noticed something... Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I can't figure out how on earth do I switch on the 'ignore trackpad when mouse is present' feature, when a mouse is present, if there are no setting in the system preferences for this? Did i miss something?

I'm noticing that when I am in full screen mode (not the bi-directional arrow, present in some applications) that I sometimes see the bottom of my desktop background as an artefact in the application.Â
The laptop i'm using is the Mid 2012 Retina model.Â
My Macbook pro is only a few weeks old, and being it is my first Mac, I wanted to know if anyone has had any issues with the hinges on it?
They seem to be a little loose, in which if I move the system, the screen will move at times. Is this normal? I am not sure how loose the hinges should be

View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentaly AppZapped my quicktime and after that cleaned my trash can so it is completely gone now but when I try to install quicktime again from the apple site, it tells me that QuickTime X is already present and it can not install the file I am trying to install.I've attached an image of what is happening and I'd really appreciate if someone can suggest what to do on this quicktime issue.

Not So Good:
No more backlit keyboard
No more bundled USB>Ethernet adapter
Still got display port/audio out/magsafe on different sides of the chassis

Have they fixed the hinge problem?
Have they improved the cooling design?
Are the edges still quite sharp on your wrists?
Is the display fully glossy or like the old ones?
The only compelling feature for me over my revC is the 4Gb RAM. Not worth the cost of upgrading.
I have installed ubuntu on a partition on my uMB and I am having trouble getting some features like two finger scrolling and right click on the trackpad as well as getting the bluetooth to work to be able to pair with my wireless mighty mouse. Also the speakers do not work. My priority is getting the bluetooth to work because If I have a working mouse the trackpad won't really matter. When I try to pair my mouse with the bluetooth I can see it but when I enter the "0000" passcode and click connect it says connection failed.

My 24" 2.4 GHz Al iMac has a random freezing problem. I am thinking of doing an archive and install of the OS (running 10.5.6). Questions:
1. Will an A&I keep all my present data?
2. How is it done?
I've never done it before and want to make sure I do it correctly. I did a forum search of archive and install, and nothing pertinent came up for me. I do have both installation disks that came with the iMac, so I should be good to go there.
Using Safari on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, I am suddenly unable to view pdfs - they automatically download and then open in Preview, when previously they would open in a Safari window. I do not have the adobe pdf plugin, having previously removed this months ago. How I can get pdfs to open within a Safari window again? Just to reiterate - the Adobe pdf plugin is not present in either of the internet plug-in folders.

I have a home built P.C. that I run ubuntu on. It's a really kickass machine and contains everything I need, it runs the first intel quad core processor. My delimma(not really, just a hard choice) is that I can't decide on MBA or and MBP. If I get an MBP I can just keep running my PC as is. But if I get a MBA(which is all I really need) don't I need mac os x to use the features of my computer, like the disc drive and such to run on a MBA. Does the MBA run with Windows? Certainly it doesnt run with Linux?

Amongst all the exaggerated violence, I couldn't help but notice that Jessica Alba's Macbook Pro in the movie has many of the new design traits as the Macbook Air. The most noticeable of these is the white surrounding around the screen. This discovery alone prompted me to register here and post this.Here are three snapshots from the movie to prove my point.So could this possibly be the design for a 2011 Macbook Pro release? And will this mean the new MBP will sport MBA features such as instant on technology?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am perfectly happy with my MBA, but I must admit that I like to always have the "latest and greatest". The new MacBooks look great, although I haven't seen one "live" or had the opportunity to get hands on with one yet. If I buy a new MacBook, I give up the form factor, but gain the processor power, features, etc. Also, it will really feel like a new computer because of the different appearance. Since I like the MBA form factor, I was thinking of just upgrading to that. The problem is that it won't even feel like I got a new laptop, because visually it would be identical to the one I have now. In fact, the reduced battery life may not offset the benefit of larger HD and improved graphics. Dying for a new laptop though... what are you other MBA owners thinking?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout 3 weeks ago, I went out of town for a week then came back. When I started up my PPC G5 iMac, I went to open Safari....but it disappeared. The icon was still in the dock, but when I clicked on it, a translucent "?" showed up over it. I tried a Spotlight search for it, and nothing came up. Same thing happened with Preview. I thought my Aunt who was staying over didn't know how to use the Mac and might have accidentally deleted them, so I used Pacifist to reinstall Safari and Preview from the Leopard disc. No big deal.
Then today, I fire up Word, but same thing! Word disappeared! Same with Excel. No matter, reinstalled from the disc. After a couple of hours, I'm back again and this time I want to use Roxio Toast....gone. And this time, I don't have any install disc (lost it during moving). And I know my Aunt can't be responsible for Toast or Word disappearing, since she left yesterday afternoon; mom was using Word on my computer and I used Toast no more than 5 days ago.
So anyone have any clue what the heck is going on with my applications literally deleting themselves?

Trying to install OS X Server and it says that I have to update to 10.9.3
Which I did as you can see.
I Rebooted again doing a Command/Option/ P R to insure that all cache memory was deleted and Still it will not show the update for 10.9.3
What can I do now to force it to read 10.9.3

Rather than relying on an external optical drive or another computer sharing its DVD drive, the new Mac Book Air supplies a solid state reinstallation drive the plugs into the USB port. The new drive, a naked mini USB dongle without the usual shielding, is pictured on Apple's MacBook Air product page as among the items included in the box. The new MacBook Air, with screen sizes of 11.6 and 13.3 inches, was introduced Wednesday.The new USB device eliminates any need for optical media, without taking up storage space on the sold state hard drive as many other PC do with their factory reinstall partition.
Apart from USB 2.0 ports on either side of the unit, the new MacBook Air design uses a conventional MagSafe port for power (using a 45 watt adapter), a MiniDisplay port that supports DVI, Dual-link DVI, HDMI (with audio), and VGA signaling with the use of external adapters, and a standard headphone port (which supports iPhone-style headphones with a remote and integrated mic). I have a situation where I've imported a large number of albums but not all from an external NAS (via SMB). My question is, if I import again will it check that my previous imports are present and just skip to the next album or will it re-import the album? I only want to import the albums not present as it will take hours to import whole folder. Can anyone confirm what itunes will do?
