Hardware :: New MacBook Air Features - USB Software Reinstall Drive
Oct 20, 2010
Rather than relying on an external optical drive or another computer sharing its DVD drive, the new Mac Book Air supplies a solid state reinstallation drive the plugs into the USB port. The new drive, a naked mini USB dongle without the usual shielding, is pictured on Apple's MacBook Air product page as among the items included in the box. The new MacBook Air, with screen sizes of 11.6 and 13.3 inches, was introduced Wednesday. The new USB device eliminates any need for optical media, without taking up storage space on the sold state hard drive as many other PC do with their factory reinstall partition.
Apart from USB 2.0 ports on either side of the unit, the new MacBook Air design uses a conventional MagSafe port for power (using a 45 watt adapter), a MiniDisplay port that supports DVI, Dual-link DVI, HDMI (with audio), and VGA signaling with the use of external adapters, and a standard headphone port (which supports iPhone-style headphones with a remote and integrated mic). There is also an integrated microphone built into the side of the unit.

I recently added a G-Speed Q RAID array to my MAC PRO to use exclusively for back-up with Time Machine. It worked great.I then decided to also share the external device over hardwire lan with my wife's iMAC so whe could back-up with Time MAchine as well.I then started reading posts that suggested the two Time Machine instances would compete for space on the back-up array and eventually it would fill up a I'd have problems. The solution, everyone said, was to partition the external drive and assign one to each Time Machine back-up.I did this and everything seemed to be working great until the remote client tried to run back-up.
It fails with the "Disk does not support AFP features" error message.Current status, local machine back-up works fine. Remote machine cand find the drive and connect once I provide correct user name and password, but fails once back-up begins. Both machines are running Lion 10.7.4.

I want to reinstall my MacBook Air with the 10.6 'Reinstall Drive' that came with the MBA -- the small USB key.
When I insert the device it pops up a window and I click the install icon; it tells me it will not reboot, which it does. The Apple log appears and the nothing happens (I have left it for 15 minutes). In the manual it tells me I can also insert the device, start eh MBA and hold down the C key. Same thing, apple logo then nothing else

I just received my new MacBook Air 11" and love it! Though I no longer want the USB Software Reinstall Drive to contain the 10.6 and iLife '11 and I am looking for a way to format the USB thumb drive into a usable flash drive. I tried using the disk utility, but it only sees the drive like a CD containing the information and not like a flash drive, eliminating the simple option to just use the disk utility to erase. Hoping that someone can help me use this neat looking USB drive for something more than a piece of plastic I never pull back out of my box.

The USB "Software Reinstall Drive" that came with my MacBook Air, has iLife on it. The "Software Reinstall Drive" is recognised by my iMac and I can open it. However, when I try to run the iLife installer it says that it cannot install on this computer. Does anyone have any ideas or do you think that it is irrevocably fixed to the MacBook Air?

After backing up my data and then swiping my hard drive using Disk Utility, my OS seems to have been uninstalled as well. Is there a way to recover the deleted information and go back to the last working configuration? I'm on a MBP IC2D 2.16 w/ Lion.

My Macbook pro is only a few weeks old, and being it is my first Mac, I wanted to know if anyone has had any issues with the hinges on it?
They seem to be a little loose, in which if I move the system, the screen will move at times. Is this normal? I am not sure how loose the hinges should be

So I recently decided to revive the ole Powerbook by replacing the hard drive, and I even found the original CD it came with. However, when I turn it on, the CD won't load into the slot, I think it's broken. I do, however, have an external hard drive and another mac, so I was wondering if there was another way of loading the OS onto there via firewire or something?

I am in the process of selling my old Mini, so after migrated all my data to my new one, I wiped the drive (wrote zeros). I initially tried installing from the Snow Leopard disk, but the install failed for some reason. So, I pulled out my Leopard disk and attempted an install just to see if it was the disk or something like that. That also failed, so I ran disk utilities on the hard drive. After running repair disk, I got the error: "Invalid B-tree node size. Volume check failed. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."

Here's what I gathered so far on the new Airs.
Good:
More RAM - up to 4GB. At last.
Flash storage across the range - faster to resume from sleep, faster in general
11.6" also available - at least there is a choice of sizes
Beefier graphics chips - will now drive the 27" Cinema Display natively
Stereo speakers
Glass Trackpad - though you may not prefer it
Higher resolution displays
+1 USB port
Improved battery life (TBC)
Reduced thickness and weight
Not So Good:
No more backlit keyboard
No more bundled USB>Ethernet adapter
Still got display port/audio out/magsafe on different sides of the chassis
Unknown:
Have they fixed the hinge problem?
Have they improved the cooling design?
Are the edges still quite sharp on your wrists?
Is the display fully glossy or like the old ones?
The only compelling feature for me over my revC is the 4Gb RAM. Not worth the cost of upgrading.

I have installed ubuntu on a partition on my uMB and I am having trouble getting some features like two finger scrolling and right click on the trackpad as well as getting the bluetooth to work to be able to pair with my wireless mighty mouse. Also the speakers do not work. My priority is getting the bluetooth to work because If I have a working mouse the trackpad won't really matter. When I try to pair my mouse with the bluetooth I can see it but when I enter the "0000" passcode and click connect it says connection failed.

what is the best browser to use on Mac OS X Lion if I need to access Webmail (OWA) and use features like "Mark as Unread" that are not available in Safari? Some basic features are just not available to Safari users, but I'm hoping they'd be avilable from other browsers.Â

but I have a Mac Pro 2008 that when I verify disk, I get an error saying I need to start up from the OS X install disc and run disk utility on it to fix errors. I've done that, it says it fixes errors, but back in the OS, it will give me same error again and say I need to run disk utility from the install disc.
So, my question is, I can reinstall the OS from my Snow Leopard disc, but I really don't want to... it's my freelance machine and I don't want to have to reinstall all of my applications (that can take years to install all discs, updates and media), scripts, plug-ins, media archives, etc.
Any advice on a way to fix disk errors like this without having to go back to all your install discs? I'm at work now so I can't remember the exact disk error, but I can post tonight if this can better direct me to a specific program/procedure that might help. I also haven't tried verifying disk from another admin account... which I can also try... just figured it seemed like a system-wide problem.

I have never had this problem before: I deleted Bootcamp partition. Repaired my hard disk and then erased my hard drive. Now I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard and after the install starts it says: 35 minutes remaining" for about 5 minutes. Then it goes to a screen that says: "Install Failed: Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer. The Installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again." I tried restarting and installing and I get the exact same situation. I am not sure what is going on here. This MBP is less than 6 months old and this is the 1st time I have tried a reinstall on this particular machine.

I'm usually just a reader and not a contributer here at macrumours, but a few days ago i watched Machete, Robert Rodriguez's new movie. Amongst all the exaggerated violence, I couldn't help but notice that Jessica Alba's Macbook Pro in the movie has many of the new design traits as the Macbook Air. The most noticeable of these is the white surrounding around the screen. This discovery alone prompted me to register here and post this. Here are three snapshots from the movie to prove my point. So could this possibly be the design for a 2011 Macbook Pro release? And will this mean the new MBP will sport MBA features such as instant on technology?

I am perfectly happy with my MBA, but I must admit that I like to always have the "latest and greatest". The new MacBooks look great, although I haven't seen one "live" or had the opportunity to get hands on with one yet. If I buy a new MacBook, I give up the form factor, but gain the processor power, features, etc. Also, it will really feel like a new computer because of the different appearance. Since I like the MBA form factor, I was thinking of just upgrading to that. The problem is that it won't even feel like I got a new laptop, because visually it would be identical to the one I have now. In fact, the reduced battery life may not offset the benefit of larger HD and improved graphics. Dying for a new laptop though... what are you other MBA owners thinking?

So I've got a unibody MBP and connected to this I have a 320gb external drive I use to back up, but I only back up music, movies and documents so it's got 50 free gigabytes. I was hoping to partition off say 30gigs, install tinyxp and play games off this partition. But when I try and partition off 30, 25 or even 20 gigs Disk Utility tells me there's no free space on the hard drive.
So my questions are, how can I solve this issues, and would this idea work for playing games through windows anyway? I initially tried to get a bootcamp partition on my main Macintosh HD, but apparently there are files that cannot be moved in the way, and the only way to solve said issue is a complete reinstall of leopard, which I can't be bothered with seeing as snow leopards only a couple of months away.

A friend brought his new 15" Macbook Pro to me after trying to install Boot Camp and Windows XP. He said that he made a second partition for Windows; however, the drive showed only one partition formatted with NTFS. I tried reinstalling mac os using the disk that came with the laptop. When it came time to choose the destination drive, none showed up. I then went to Disk Utility. The drive and the volume showed up in the left panel but I could not Erase or do anything else - all the options were grayed out. With no firewire port I am also unable to use target mode.
