MacBook Pro :: Resetting System Management Controller?
I have a macbook pro 15, core 2 duo processor, 140 GB hard drive that is almost full.I shut it down last night & now it won't power up. Hear fan but no startup sound, no video, power light is not lit.Would the almost full hard drive (less than 8 GB remaining) interfere with startup? Info: MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.7)

MacBook Pro :: SMC Firmware Updates For Intel-based Macs?
my macbook pro (late 2011) is powering down without warning. I'll be writing an email and w/o warning, it's off. I'm unable to turn it back on with the power button unless i hold it down for a slow count to 10. Fyi - machine is 100% charged when this happens. Two days ago, I did SMC and PRC resets with Apple Care. I needed to do both of these again yesterday on my own. Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

MacBook Pro :: Resetting SMC With Battery Not Removed
I have (over time) had several unusual things happen to my 1 year-old MBP. In reading the Apple article for resetting the SMC after trying the other steps suggested with no change in the problems, I am wanting to reset the SMC. However, the options are confusing to me. The 2 options about the battery, I can say it does not have the battery that used to be in my older MBP that just pops out. The second option for resetting the SMC says "resetting with a battery you should NOT remove" Since this option seems to be the closest one to my machine, I want to make sure because in the owners manual it goes over how to remove the battery and does not say you should not remove the battery on your own. However, is this the link I would follow for resetting the SMC? My machine does not fit the 3rd link. I want to make sure I do the right thing. Just in case you need to know, my battery icon does not display properly when the MBP is plugged into the MagSafe and when I initially plug it into the adapter, it says, "not charging." It also will be hooked up to the MagSafe with the amber light on but the % charged will not change for a long time unless I unplug it, restart the machine and plug it back up. Not sure if this is related but the past week I have had Safari Quit unexpectedly about 5 times per day. I get the report form and send that in, but I have never had this issue before. I have been watching a lot of online TV programs from NBC online and CBS online, but I am not sure if this is related and will be helped by the reset. I did a check on my machine's serial number (at [URL]), and I just noticed that there was supposed to be a hard drive firmware update and an EFI Firmware update, but I do not know enough about computers to go through with these. What link to follow for resetting the SMC and what to do if that does not help at least the charging and saying, "not charging" when the MagSafe is hooked up to the MBP. I should add that the outlet is working fine. Information: MBP 3.06 GHz, 500GB 7200 RPM, Intel C2D. 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Mac OS X (10.6.5)

MacBook :: Finding SMC Controller?
I was given a mac book that wouldn't show anything on screen, apple said it had bad logic board. I fixed that by torching the gpu die, and everything is perfect. Except the computer will not charge that battery, says battery 0% "not charging". I tried all the usual, so does anyone know exactly were the smc controller is on the motherboard? I have some ideas And all the cables from the mag safe connecter to the battery, appear good.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Wi-Fi Internet Connections - Drop Outs After MBP Wakes Up / Resetting SMC Effect On This?
I have the new MBP 17 and recurring issues with the Aiport/Internet connections with my TC 500 Dual Band: After the MBP wakes from sleep mode, I have recurring drop outs with regard to my internet connection. Airport connection shows me the full 4 bars and tells me I am connected, but Safari loads internet pages to no avail. I then usually deactivate my airport for 5 seconds, then reactivate it. The connection usually is better after that, but I do still have drop out issues every so often. Anyone experiencing the same problem? Would resetting SMC have any effect on this? Logic Studio / Pro :: Resetting Controller Assignments To Default
I just purchased a Korg MicroKontrol and installed it as per the instructions and have been mucking about with the settings, and accidentally deleted one of the presets for the controller assignments which allowed the pads to control the transport. I tried reinstalling the driver for the Korg hoping it would restore the default controller assignment settings but no luck. Are the default assignments controlled by Logic or the Korg drivers and how can I go about reverting back to the original assignments (or is there a file I can pull from my Time Machine backup that restores them)? OS X V10.4 :: Starting From An External USB Storage Device (Intel-based Macs)?
I have a 2006 Intel Macbook with a crashed hard drive. I'm kinda broke right now, so instead of buying a new hard drive I loaded ubuntu 10.4 onto an external hard drive (USB) and tried to boot the macbook from it. (Failed). I hold down option to launch Startup Manager and all it shows me is a cursor (no drives). I know the external drive is bootable because I a) booted the laptop from a LiveCD and used it to create the hard drive and b) I booted a Dell from the external. I've tried moving the drive to a different USB port, but no chips. I don't have anything else connected to the computer. my question is: Can I boot the macbook from the external hard drive if the internal hard drive is shot? Info: MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

OS X Leopard :: Resetting Icons Based On File Type
Not sure what happened here, but maybe a week or so ago, the icons for my image files (jpg, png, etc.) become different things. In the same folder, JPG files may have 3 or 4 different icons. Sorry, I don't know how else to explain it. Any idea how to make it so they all just go back to the standard icon for those different file types? Information: MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.5.6)

MacBook Pro :: Resetting PRAM And NVRAM Revert System To 9400m?
I just noticed this and was wondering if it was a common occurrence. If I have my MBP set to use the 9600m GT and I decide to reset the PRAM/NVRAM, will the computer automatically revert to the 9400m after such reset. I just noticed that my graphics settings changed by itself and could only draw up the PRAM/NVRAM reset as the cause. Is this the case? Software :: Upgrading PowerPC Based Macs From OS X 10.4.11 To 10.5
I'm basically in the same boat as this person in that I need to upgrade from OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5. In my case, I need to upgrade a Mac-mini and two iMacs. I'm scouring the web for legal copies of OS X 10.5 I can purchase and I've been finding upgrade DVDs being sold in addition to full install DVDs. Both sets of DVDs are official Apple DVDs. My question: could I use an 10.5 upgrade DVD to do the upgrade or must I use a 10.5 full install DVD? I do realize there is a difference between a 10.5 update DVD vs an upgrade DVD and I'm asking about a 10.5 upgrade DVD..

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Resetting Macs To A Fresh State Every Morning?
Just curious if anyone knew (or wants to guess) on how the Apple Store keeps all their demo Macs clean and fresh every day. I'd imagine at the end of the day, there's some sort of automated rewind or system refresh that sets everything back to a square one state. Netboot is certainly one answer. Is Netboot particularly network intensive? Our IT guy thinks Netboot will put a constant strain on the network all day (I'd like to convince him otherwise if it doesn't). However, I'm not sure if the Apple Stores are using Netboot or not. Is a server installing a fresh system image every night? Or how would a non-Netboot setup work? I'd like to get a Mac lab to use one pristine master disk image (containing the system, 3rd party apps, plug-ins, prefs, fonts, user accounts, monitor settings, etc). At the end of every night, I'd like to reset all the Macs to square one. Information: 8-Core 2.93GHz Nehalem Mac Pro, 24GB RAM, Dual Velociraptor RAID, ATI 4870 Mac OS X (10.6.4)

MacBook Pro :: Migrating From PowerPC To Intel-Based PC
I finally put out for a new MBP 2.66, and need help on how to get my iTunes and iPhoto from my old G4 to my new MBP. I have a thumb drive, but it isn't large enough. (8gb) Can I just burn them, then re-install them onto the new MBP? How/when will I de-authorize my computer, and then re-authorize my new MBP? AND, should I go ahead and install Snow Leopard before I do any of the above? I have already decided not to move any of my programs from my G4 due to Rosetta? I read up on it elsewhere on these forums, and it seems moving programs from my G4 will be quite an issue....

Hardware :: Apple Laying Ground Work For TRIM Support In Future SSD-based Macs?
Apple may be laying the foundation for TRIM support in future Macs, a technology that should allow their solid state flash drives to maintain optimal performance throughout the life span of the systems. The Mac maker's most recent 13-inch MacBook Pros display an option for TRIM support in their system profilers on SSD-equipped models, one which isn't present in either the second-generation unibody 15-inch MacBook Pros or the latest refresh sporting Intel's Core i5 and Core i7 processors.TRIM is essentially a command that lets operating systems like Mac OS X inform SSDs of which blocks of pre-written data are no longer in use, allowing them to be wiped clean internally.

Final Cut Pro :: Editing HDV PAL Using Windows Based System
I am trying to explain to a colleague why he is finding editing with HDV Pal difficult, I assume he is using a windows based system and he thinks switching to FCP might help him, as I understand, correct me if I am wrong, HDV 1440x1080 is a long gop system and being PAL is interlaced video, and ingesting in a pro-res or AIC format would lessen the load. I assume the problem is that the video on the tape is a version of MPEG-2, and is muxed audio+video and that once you use pro-res or AIC this de muxes the video and converts it to a progressive scan short gop file format? I have no idea how Premiere works, I assume it can handle Long GOP, but this is processor intensive, and as a result slows the PC down, I know he is using a PC, and wants to convert to Mac/FCS 3. Is my understanding correct, the GOP structure of HDV is Long GOP, bad for editing? That down converting, will not destroy the 4:2:2 color system in PAL? Information: Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I also need the functionality to draw Mind Mapping.

Applications :: Smc FAN Control Settings In A System
you are running SMC fan control at a low or medium fan setting, that the smc overrides those settings if the Mac starts to overheat and requiring fans to be above those settings? So far I'm using SMC at Medium fan settings, my CPU fan is constantly at 2150 RPM range. Having your Mac cooler than normal for the price of some lower fans is quite worth it, but I'm worried that if I am using a lot of high CPU apps that the fans won't automatically go up, because right now i'm compressing some 7zip archives of old data and the CPU is around 104 F, 2150 RPM fan still, it didn't change one bit from CPU at 90 F idle and 2150 RPM idle

OS X :: My System Preferences Keep Resetting?
Every time I restart my iMac, my desktop wallpaper reverts back to the default and my mouse configuration is reset so the buttons no longer do what I demand of them (Button4: Expose, I say!) It seems to be just those two issues but it happens pretty much every time the system shuts down (although not every single time). Energy saving is fine. My dock is fine. Nothing else seems to be touched. I've reset the PRAM. I've deleted the system preferences file from the library (com.apple.systempreferences...). I've repaired permissions. I still have this problem. Any ideas or solutions, aside from reinstalling OS X or not restarting my iMac ever? I should mention that I'm running 10.5.5 on an Aluminum 2.0 Core 2 Duo Intel iMac. My system is all-natural. No fancy hacks or system modification programs installed here.
