MacBook Pro :: "Gateway" Suddenly Showing Up On It?

"Gateway" suddenly showed up under my shared list today. I purchased my MacBook Pro less than 6 months ago, and this thing just popped up today.I tried to Google to find out what it is, but I am absolutely tech stupid and can't seem to find the answers to my questions, other than learning that it's a sharing mechanism (I think). All it says is: "gateway Connection Failed" with a little button beneath that says "Connect as" and when I click it, I am told that the connection failed. What is this thing, exactly?

I have an iBookG4 with Leopard. This morning I may have had too many applications going at once--camera applications plus listening to a talk using RealPlayer. Suddenly everything froze, but I got it all going again. However, now the little balls that appear under an application icon to show that the app. is open are missing. Also, when I click the icon, e.g., for Firefox which I'm using right now, the pop-up menu gives me the option to "Open" it, when, obviously, it's already open. There is no "Close" option in the menu anymore. I AM able to quit applications by clicking their name in the menu bar at the top of the screen. But I'm disturbed that this weirdness has happened. Things I've tried already, without effect:
1. Restarted computer. The computer won't shut down. Everything on my desktop disappears except for the wallpaper and the Dock.
2. Shut down computer (chose "Shut Down" as opposed to "Restart"). Same as #1. Won't shut down.
3. "Force Quit"--clicking on the Apple icon > Force Quit > clicking on the name of the application in the little window. Note: I haven't used Word this morning, but Apple icon > Force Quit > [little window] brought up a whole list of applications I haven't used, inc. Word.

For some reason, when my son was trying to load a from a CD to the applications folder all the applications suddenly disappeared. If you click on itunes or word you get an error notice about a corrupt file. The documents appear to be there.What should we do? We are running OS 10.4.11 on an iMac.

This mode is probably used by a small number of users.WiFi Menu Includes wrong Preference options when connecting to the WAN via Ethernet and using MacBook Pro as a WiFi gateway.

The Gateway has everything that I could think of for a monitor, but I have heard good things from some posts and very bad things from other posts. I mean how many displays are out there that are 30" LCD with 2560x1600 that cost under $1000. The 30" ACD is of course a good choice for a monitor but it is twice as expensive just for 1 and it is also old technology.

I have a Mac Mini connect to my Wireless Router (Gateway 192.168.4.1) I have enabled Internet Sharing on 10.5.8 on Ethernet and have a Cable Running to my Samsung LED 40" HDTV and can happily access the Internet@Tv functions no problem.* My problem is the Mac has assigned the Tv on gateway 192.168.2.1 which is different from my Hardware wireless router of 192.168.4.1.* I have the Samsung Tv IPhone Remote App. My iPhone is connected via the Wireless router on 192.168.4.1 and my Tv is on 192.168.2.1 so they are not picking each other up and not connecting.* How can I change my shared connection to use the hardware routers gateway of 192.168.4.1 to allow my networks media sharing capabilities and connection of other wifi devices on the hardware router?

usually I'm using Internet with WLAN-connection. Sometimes I want to connect my mac additionally with the LAN on work. As soon as I plug in the ethernet, there is a new item in the routing table, so I have two default-gateways - one to the WLAN-router and one to the standard-gateway of my work's LAN. Â
So for example I cannot take new mails from my private pop-account and for using internet I have to register a proxy-server. That's circuitous!Â
My idea is to create a plist-file in launchDaemons-directory, that deletes the default-gateway-item to my work's standard-gateway and adds a net-route to this only for my work's network.Â

Once or twice recently I have had the 'Bad gateway' message.  It's only been on the screen when in Apple Community pages.  Prior to these events I have never before met this message.Â

Currently running OSX 10.5 and how to find your gateway address in Terminal? IFCONFIG only appears to show the IP address. I know you can find it via System Preferences > Network but would like to know if it is possible to find it via terminal.

I would like to setup a gateway on a mac mini. The requirement for many gateways is to have two network ports. However a mac mini has one physical network port. How can i setup a virtual network port to work setup the gateway server?

I just plugged headphones into the headphone port on my iMac(dual core 2.4) I went to system preferences, sound, then output and only the internal speakers show up. I rebooted the machine and still, same thing.
I tried the same headphones on the eMac sitting next to it, and it worked just fine. Still confused about the iMac

My email messages for one Google account no longer show up in my OS X Mail client.Case info:This may have occurred after I enabled the 'All Mail' to Apple Mail for the account, then removed it once I saw it was adding every single message I deleted since the beginning of time. Still, that doesn't explain the following...My email messages for another Google account does show up in my OS X Mail client. They have exactly the same IMAP settings other than username and password.My email messages for the account that doesn't work, shows up fine on my iPhone/iOS and gmail.com.None of the messages in the inbox or folders/labels show up. The count is zero. However they all show up fine in folders in iOS and on gmail.com.There is an indicator for one new message in the inbox, but none show.

explain why my MBP is running very hot under OS X. It started about 2 days ago, to the point where in just a few minutes the laptop is running very hot and fans going probably at 100% (but I didn't test this). I'm using windows under bootcamp now and that is fine, so I don't think it's the hardware. I have checked the ram use and thing seems normal - the highest being safari around 250mb with many tabs open. Would it be something using the CPU to make it heat up? Even with nothing open it heats up in a few minutes. This was before the most recent update, and after the recent update. It's a 13" 2010 MBP.

This started about 2 days ago, there was no apparent signs of such a thing going to happen.
My MacBook suddenly shuts down in the middle of my work. Shut down as in a sudden shut down, as if the battery was removed. There is no shutdown process, the whole screen just goes black. I've realized that this happens more recently when watching youtube videos, playing flash games etc.
Example : Computer dies in 10 minutes when watching videos/playing games. Computer dies in a few hours or NEVER when just typing, surfing.
It doesn't seem to be a battery problem. I've removed the battery and had my Macbook run on the Charger before, and it still died on me...

the krb5kdc suddenly ate up all my HDD, leaving zero kb available. I checked my HDD and found the krb5kdc file taking up to 47 GB in hidden files, just the amount of HDD available I had before the problem started.

My screen works fine for the most part, but sometimes it goes really dim. When I move the lid, it goes back to normal. What is causing it to all of a sudden go dim? I have Apple Care for my Mac, but I've installed a new hard drive and new RAM; does that void my warranty?

I've suddenly come across a problem, which I'm not sure I understand at all... My Macbook Pro has stopped being able to read PC burnt data CDs. CDs that have previously worked. I get the "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer" error. They work in my old PC laptop, BUT, I booted up in Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro and it only saw the CD as a blank CD, so I'm guessing it's not an OS problem.
Just to make things even more clear, PC burnt audio CDs STILL work, and Mac burnt data/audio CDs still work. So it also doesn't seem to be a problem with the optical drive itself.

Let me start by saying that I know very little about how computers/networks, etc work.
I've had my macbook for a couple years (I don't even know how to find out what year it was made, I'd guess 2008). It just suddenly stopped allowing me to connect to the internet wirelessly at my house. I brought it to my college campus, where I've been able to connect all semester, and I cannot connect there either. I'm receiving wireless signals in both places with my phone.
When I go to system pref - network....and highlight airport, it says it's not connected even though i have all my bars at the top right of the screen.
It says "Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet."
I should point out that my brother's macbook pro still works fine wirelessly in our house.

well was using my macbook and he display suddenly went black on me. I charged and restarted with no luck I usually get a quick flash and then it continues to start up. now if I look closely the system is working properly becasue i can see my log in screen very faintly in the back ground. I'm posting this on behalf of my father. He has a 2008 white macbook which has recently started running quite hot (160-180+F), even at idle. It has the latest version of 10.7 installed. He has an external HD with his previous copy of 10.6 and it exhibits the same behavior when booted from that system.He bugs me whenever he has computer problems told me that his MacBook had started randomly shutting down with no warning. I had similar trouble with a MacBook Pro and it turned out to be a faulty battery, so we got him a new battery, figuring it couldn't hurt to have a fresh one with a 4 year old computer. it didn't solve the problem at all.
Later he said that he noticed the computer felt hot, so he decided to run a small fan blowing across the computer while it was on his desk, and that stopped the random shutdowns. So I thought, OK, this is an overheating issue. Maybe the fan isn't working properly, it's full of dust, something is hogging the CPU all the time, etc.
The next time I was at his place I had him install fan control and a temperature meter. We noticed right away that the thing was running really hot. It was at 160-180F while at idle. He had menu meters installed, after a reboot we could see that the processor was sitting at 2-5% load. Not only did the sensors report the high temperate, but I could feel that the bottom of the case was very hot.We decided to open up the case and see if there was dust clogging things up, etc. There was some, but nothing clogging vents or anything. We blew it out nice and clean with compressed air anyway and put it back together. I even turned it on while we had it open so I cold see that the fan was actually spinning, and it was.
