Currently running OSX 10.5 and how to find your gateway address in Terminal? IFCONFIG only appears to show the IP address. I know you can find it via System Preferences > Network but would like to know if it is possible to find it via terminal.

Until recently, Terminal 2.1.1 under Mac OS X 10.6.3 worked just fine for me. But now it has just stopped loading the prompt. I can open new Terminal windows but they are blank. I have tried logging out and in to my user account but this has not fixed it. I have made minor changes to my .bash_profile (see below) but all long before this problem began. I have not changed the directory structure so it should be able to CD to Dropbox/Drominay. I have not changed any preferences in Terminal other than those related to colour etc. In particular, it's still set to load the default login shell at startup.
.bash_profile is:
export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH
export MANPATH=/usr/local/man:$MANPATH
##
# Your previous /Users/steven/.bash_profile file was backed up as /Users/steven/.bash_profile.macports-saved_2009-06-28_at_08:42:07

That little prompt you get when you go through the apple menu at the top left and hit shut down. It gives you 60 seconds, etc... I want to know how to initiate that from the terminal. I keep apcupsd running on my mac mini server, and if the power goes out, i want it to tell my machines to shut down. I already have a growl message setup letting me know when the power goes out (forwarded to my iphone over prowl, etc etc). I can ssh into the systems via bash scripting and issue the command, that's np. I just have no idea wtf the command is to throw that prompt.

From time to time, my terminal shell prompt gets hijacked and set to something useless by another program or process. For example, it currently reads: "qtsoftware >" , probably from a QuickTime update, but I can't say for sure. Anyway, when this happens, I'm unable to reset the prompt to a customized version via .tcshrc -- instead, the unwanted garbage gets prepended to whatever I configure via .tcshrc. Restarting Terminal doesn't help. This obviously isn't the end of the world, but it's intensely annoying since, when I do need to use Term, I usually use about ten windows at once, and prompts matter.
my .tcshrc setting: set prompt = "%m [%/] What you say?"
my prompt: qtsoftware [/Users/kathleenduke] What you say?

I'm running Snow Leopard. If I have a couple of Terminal sessions running and I try to quit both of them via the Quit Terminal entry in the Terminal menu, I get a dialog box with the following message: You have 2 windows with running processes. Do you want to review these windows before quitting? I don't ever recall getting this message under Leopard, so I assume it's a new feature under Snow Leopard. I want to disable this dialog. Is there a property setting for the Snow Leopard version of Terminal which controls this?

The Gateway has everything that I could think of for a monitor, but I have heard good things from some posts and very bad things from other posts. I mean how many displays are out there that are 30" LCD with 2560x1600 that cost under $1000. The 30" ACD is of course a good choice for a monitor but it is twice as expensive just for 1 and it is also old technology.

I have a Mac Mini connect to my Wireless Router (Gateway 192.168.4.1) I have enabled Internet Sharing on 10.5.8 on Ethernet and have a Cable Running to my Samsung LED 40" HDTV and can happily access the Internet@Tv functions no problem.* My problem is the Mac has assigned the Tv on gateway 192.168.2.1 which is different from my Hardware wireless router of 192.168.4.1.* I have the Samsung Tv IPhone Remote App. My iPhone is connected via the Wireless router on 192.168.4.1 and my Tv is on 192.168.2.1 so they are not picking each other up and not connecting.* How can I change my shared connection to use the hardware routers gateway of 192.168.4.1 to allow my networks media sharing capabilities and connection of other wifi devices on the hardware router?

usually I'm using Internet with WLAN-connection. Sometimes I want to connect my mac additionally with the LAN on work. As soon as I plug in the ethernet, there is a new item in the routing table, so I have two default-gateways - one to the WLAN-router and one to the standard-gateway of my work's LAN.
So for example I cannot take new mails from my private pop-account and for using internet I have to register a proxy-server. That's circuitous!
My idea is to create a plist-file in launchDaemons-directory, that deletes the default-gateway-item to my work's standard-gateway and adds a net-route to this only for my work's network.

Once or twice recently I have had the 'Bad gateway' message. It's only been on the screen when in Apple Community pages. Prior to these events I have never before met this message.
Am I alone with this problem?

Anybody see this before? I opened up Terminal.app and the window is completely blank. There is nothing in it whatsoever. Looks as if bash never started. The title bar simply says "Terminal — login — 80x24". I can type whatever I want in the Terminal window like it's a text document and nothing happens. If I restart the computer, this seems to fix the problem, but it seems to only be a temporary fix as the issue happens again soon after.

I'm trying to do something in terminal, and it asks for my password. I press a letter on my keyboard, and nothing appears. I am in the right window and everything, terminal just doesn't react to my typing. However, when I click enter, it says 'Sorry, try again'. So it does react to the enter key.

I'm running Symantec Backup Agent on our mac osx server. I start the agent in the terminal (./agent.be). It returns a notification that it started the service, however, it doesn't return to the prompt. Closing the terminal gives a warning that the process will be closed if the terminal is closed. Closing it does kill the process. Ctrl+c to return to the prompt also kills the process. So it's as if once the process is started in the terminal, nothing can be altered.
I am not much of a mac guy so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
Anyone have any advice on how to handle this so the process is ALWAYS running?

I just recently got an iBook G3. I found it in my towns recycling center and brought it home. The user on it does not have admin privileges. Seeing how it's old and is running 10.2 I was just going to install some sort of Linux on it. I went to go boot into a CD and it came up with a grey screen with a password prompt? I don't have the password. Does the same thing if I try to boot into single user mode.

I don't suppose any clever person knows if it's possible to access the BIOS setup screen on windows XP? I've been told it usually comes about by pressing/holding the "delete" key whilst windows is loading. However, I can't seem to get it to appear on the Macbook pro whilst I load. I need to disable hyperthreading in the BIOS to get something to work, and this seems to be the way to do it.

I have been beating my head against a wall for weeks trying to boot into Windows. So after weeks of searching for a solution and many attempts of re-installing both Windows and OSX. I am at the mercy of some of the very MAC wise folks here. So I will try and be as brief as I can.
I have a first gen Mac Pro that has worked great since I bought it in 2006. I have bought a Gforce 8800GT 1st gen upgrade video card. Bought it the first day it shipped, like a lot of other people. I followed the the thread that pushed apple for a upgrade for us early adopters. And am glad that apple listened to their customers and made a compatible ROM for the card.
So now to my problem and why I think it maybe a EFI issue. While waiting and reading about the then rumored video card upgrade, I tried to use a PC version of the 8800 GT, same card with a PC ROM. Well If I would of read more first I would of known that it would not work, and was really just taking a chance and thought that somewhere someone would make this work. Boy was I wrong. So after taking out the card and putting back in my 7300 stock card, I can no longer boot into windows. I get a blue screen stop error 0X000000CA (0X0000002, 0X89A0B0C0, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). Didn't turn up much searching for that error. So the symptom I have is as follows: power on holding down the option key, click on my windows disk partition on a separate NTFS formated HD, the computer try's to boot into windows, but after just a quick flash of Windows XP splash screen then straight to the blue screen. Now fast forward a week. apple releases the upgrade, took the PC cad back, ordered the MAC upgrade hopping this would fix the problem, It didn't. So I do a total re-install. I totaly reinstall OSX on a fresh HD, run all updates for 10.5.2. I put in another fresh drive in and run Boot camp to install a fresh copy of XP. The CD installs the startup files to RAM, then enters the setup partition/format screen. I chose new partition select NTFS full option, the HD formats. Now windows loads the install files to the hard drive and reboots. Now I am back to where I started. OSX works perfect XP will not even install new, much less boot into the old partition that is on another HD that I have pulled out right now, I also went back to the 7300, no change. I can hit F8 and get the advanced menu, if I select safe mode it freezes and goes to blue screen. If I move either of the cards to another slot I get the same result but the Mac Pro reboots in an endless cycle after a quick blue flash. In the 16x slot it just freezes on the blue screen.
So after searching for someone with the same problem it seems I cannot find a solution other then what I have read about EFI and that it is basically emulating a BIOS so windows can boot up on the Intel hardware. So am I even thinking in the right area? Have I some how corrupted the EFI firmware? Any suggestions? I bought the Mac Pro to run Pro Tools in windows along with Windows only apps. I use final cut pro in OSX, but I spend most of my time in Windows using the awesome power of the machine. I like OSX but it is not a total OS solution for me, I really like having a hybrid, and VM's and such in OSX will not work with Pro Tools.

Could someone please post the BIOS/ROM from the new Mac/PC ATI 3870 card?
You can write the BIOS file from within Windows/Bootcamp by using GPU-Z. If you do not want to post it here, please consider adding it to the VGA Bios Database at techPowerUp.

I'm on a standard user account and I would really like to install icalbuddy which is a terminal app. When I install apps normally I simply have to provide a admin name and pw, but this doesn't work when it is a terminal app because it requires that the 'su' command be run.
So I thought that I could run terminal as admin through 'su - admin' and then install. But of course the admin account doesn't have access to the user folder where the installer is located. I just can't win.

I guess curiosity got the best of me and I attempted to re-flash my working Sapphire 4870 with a different bios image provided here, and now when I boot I dont get any video. Just a black screen and no chime.
After this I tried putting in my old 7200gt to try and get it to boot so I could reflash back to the old firmware - but as long as the 4870 is installed I get no video at all. As soon as I take it out everything works fine.
Please advise me on what to do next.
