I had a certain "on my mac" folder and it suddenly disappeared when I was reading my mail. When I search my hard drive, this folder is still listed under the library. Does anyone know how I can get this folder back into my mailbox and with the other "on my mac" folders?

So my friend has a MacBook, OS 10.5.7,2 ghz intel core duo. All of a sudden, she said, her system preferences suddenly disappeared. It seems like it was deleted all of a sudden. There is a ? in the area it was in the dock, and searching in finder yields no results. Also, her F1-F12 keys have reverted to the old style I have on my iBook(ie F9 shows all windows etc). However if she clicks fn with the F key it does what it's supposed to do. The most irritating part of it is that all of a sudden it reads everything that you highlight or type in.

You know when you press F4 or F5 the sound goes up and down, and then a small beeping noise goes along with it? It somehow disappeared in OS X and now when I toggle the media control buttons (F4/F5 (Old keyboard layout) it changes the sound, but has no beeping noise to go along with it.
Noise is still ok in Windows (XP.
Looked at my ITunes library last week to try and make a new playlist but all my years of music/videos etc has disappeared without me doing anything? I have had very bad luck with Time Machine as well and realised not long ago that for 4 years it has only been backing up 'Desktop' and not the whole computer. I backed up all my photos and docs on various DVD's and CD's once I realised but I cant see that I backed up my Itunes library. I am only hoping that on the 'Desktop' external hard drive back ups that I can find it again? If it is on there, how do I get it off as I have heard that you can not retrieve certain items from an external hard drive especially with Time machine although I have never needed to before. Do you think all my songs etc have gone forever now?

View 1 Replies View Relatedhowever today suddenly the superdrive decided to make a 1-2 second 'seeking' sound at *every* startup. there is no dvd inserted nor have i used it even once in this week. it does this at the grey apple screen at the same time the apple "chime" sounds.
i am pretty sure it didn't to this up until today, i am not particularly concerned but why would it start doing this after a week on its own?
my sound suddenly stopped working after i unplugged my headphones, how do i fix this?

Very suddenly my dock has disappeared, (and occasionally reappears), and is now completely non-useable. Why..? I have created other accounts on my computer previously and the dock on those is fine...I have looked in Activity monitor and it flashes on and then disappears in there.I tried using terminal to 'killall Dock', but this did nothing...Am using Leopard on Alu iMac.
Peculiar problem. My sound suddenly switched to being internal speaker only, even though I have decklink HD Extreme card and was using it as my audio output the night before. Narrowed the problem down to anything being plugged in to the firewire ports - FW400 and FW800 ports and drives or even my Mini DV deck. When I plug anything into the firewire ports, trying to get to the sound settings in system preferences hangs, and all sound will only work on the internal speaker. This is a sudden problem and leaves me only being able to plug in esata external hard drives. There is some sort of conflict going on somewhere.
Mac Pro 2008
Mac Osx 10.5.8
Decklink HD Extreme card
Recently installed LaCie eSATA II PCI Express Card.
Use the machine mostly for video editing, so really need the external HDs.
I have the early 2008 Mac Pro, standard configuration. I run a 30" ACD and recently added a second monitor. Ever since then I have been hearing this faint whirring sound, as if something in the machine is starting/reving up and then whirring down. It's audible to me because I have my machine sitting on top of a pedestal desk right beside my table. Does running two monitors make something inside, maybe a fan, run wierd? Could it be the fan of the video card? I am just curious, as I had not heard the sound before when I was running just one monitor. Oh, and the second monitor in question is a Wacom Cintiq. Video card is the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. I dare not open the side panel when the machine is running to check what's causing it lest I mess something up. It's like, rrrrrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrr, rrrrrrrrrrr, like a miniature reving sound. LOL, that's the best I can do to imitate the sound. It's as audible as the sound of the regular fans.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Macbook has suddenly stopped having internal speakers in the sound preferences. When I turn it on, it plays that familiar synth chord sound to say all is ok, but it wont play any audio. So videos and itunes etc play but the sound isn't produced. When I try to turn the volume up or down, the indicator says the volume is up full, but I cannot adjust it. Underneath the volume measurement there is a little sign in white like a no entry sign, meaning that adjustment of volume is not available.I gues this must mean that the speakers have been disabled, but can't figure out how to enable them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was listening to a podcast on itunes, paused it, closed the MacBook, opened again a few minutes later and now there's no sound at all. There's sound from the rest of the mac, online etc., but not in itunes, it just plays the podcasts/songs mutely.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed a copy of Windows Vista on my 15in Macbook Pro. I did this in order to play Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and some other games on my laptop. The machine is more than capable of running the game and I've read forum posts that had said that it works perfectly fine through boot camp. I installed the game and was playing it just fine for about 1-2 months until one day the game began to lag really bad and the sound also disappeared.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi also can't click on anything on the desktop, the only thing that is there and works are the words on the top, stopping at help. Also after every word i write, a pop up says 'alert cannot contact spell checker,' When i open safari i also cannot get it back to finder, and i can't search anything on the computer because after the second letter the screen flashes.
It started this morning i tried to write something in stickies and the computer went crazy to a blue screen and the loading circle started spinning around so i shut it down, when i loaded it up i had all these problems.
I have iBook g4 from 2005. What should i do, i don't know anything about computers. I tried searching online i tried to use killall Dock in terminal it didn't work, it said no matching processes were found.
This started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen surfing the net (like right now) or just letting it idle, my hard drive makes a slight "clunk" sound like the HD arm is hitting the edge of the case (or maybe starting up and shutting down?). There seems to be no loss of performance. I did a disk verify and everything is OK. Should I be concerned?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a person that sent along this video and it concerns me that a hard drive would make such a noise. It's unlike anything I've heard in a drive. He claims the original owner installed a new Seagate 7200rpm in the book, and that it mostly happens when loading a web-page on Safari.
Every time I look up "hard drive click" I get the SMS triggered "tink" but this notebook is not in motion and instead makes a "ca-chink".
For some odd reason, I have been experiencing some creaking when I move the display of my Unibody 15.5" Macbook Pro. At all. It just is very annoying, as it has a distinct plastiky sound to it, and it was not there to begin with. I don't know if this matters, but I have a Speck clear case that I used, but then I took it off because it seemed to be twisting the display a bit. Is this creaking a known issue with the Unibodies, or is it just because of the Speck case? I have never dropped my computer, and it has never been mistreated. It just leads its life on my desk or in my laptop bag. Any ideas?
