Is there a function to enable the external monitor to work with the mbp lid closed? Any way around this without third party software??? I enabled mirroring but when I close the lid, the mbp goes to sleep.

I picked up a new MacBook yesterday and I noticed a weird issue when coming out of "monitor sleep" mode, not regular sleep mode.
When I move the mouse, the external monitor shows what you see in the picture, kinda like a TV with no signal. The MacBook screen works fine so what I just do is unplug and re-plug in the DVI plug and everything is good again.
My 24 inch Dell monitor worked fine with my M1330 and other computers so I know it's not that. Does anyone have the same issue or maybe give me some light on this?
have a (late 2008) unibody Macbook Pro connected to an external monitor via mini-displayport to HDMI. The MBP is closed and the external monitor is my only display. I have a USB hub connected to the MBP which is connected to a mouse, keyboard, external HDD, etc.My problem is, the computer won't go to sleep unless I manually select the option from the menu. In the Energy Saver settings, the monitor and computer are both set to go to sleep at 15 and 20 minutes, respectively, and the monitor goes to sleep just fine. The computer never does, as indicated by the solid white indicator light on the front of the MBP and the fact that it stays warm after not being used for hours.

This started recently and is quite annoying. Like the title says, if I put my computer to sleep via apple menu/sleep while it is attached to my external monitor the computer will not "wake up". When I try to wake up the computer the sleep indicator stops pulsing and I can hear the hard drive start spinning. As a result I must force shut down the computer by holding the power button. The computer is fully charged so it is not a low battery issue. The external monitor is an 20" Apple Cinema Display, it is attached via Apple's DVI connector. Â
Unplugging the monitor dongle and replugging it in do not work. Pressing any assortment of keys does not bring the display back up. Â
I've tried resetting PRAM, disk permissions, and verifying the disk.Â

Have a brand new MBP 13" using Thunderbolt-DVI adapter with my old Dell 2405 LCD. Have an interesting scenario ... when the display goes to "sleep" there is still some type of signal coming out of the display port. The monitor will stay on and just blink "NO SIGNAL DETECTED ON INPUT 2". But the monitor actually still stays on.When I put the entire laptop to sleep them the monitor will properly power down to sleep mode.Â
I don't think its the monitor because I've used this monitor with a number of different machines and graphics cards, in every scenario when I had the display set to sleep it powered off just fine. Â
I am currently am using a MacBook Pro mid 2007 and was wondering it is possible to connect it to an external monitor and if so use it when closed without the comp going into sleep mode.

I bought a MBP this February. For some reason, it won't go to sleep if I close the lid -- I have to manually go to the apple menu and press sleep. Any ideas? I tried a clean install, still no luck.

I've tried using a few different apps, InsomniaX and Caffiene being two of the more popular ones, but so far nothing seems to take. I know I can do this with the use of an external monitor or mouse, but I don't want to have to keep a mouse plugged in simply so my server can run and I don't have, or want, to set up a monitor for it.Â

My daughter's macbook pro is supposed to sleep when the lid is closed but it usually shuts off the hard drive instead. She has a 15", 2010 model with the latest software and updates.

I usually like to keep my laptop running with the lid closed for extended periods (primarily when downloading). How can I disable sleep when I close the Macbook lid?
I have a first gen MBA 1.6, and recently (like two days ago) every time I close the lid it shuts down. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen more times than it doesn't. Booting it up after, a window tells me a kernel problem has occurred.
Sorry, no real knowledge of the underpinnings of how software works - so if any of you have ever experienced this, or have some tips or diagnoses, I will certainly be thankful for it.
where the *#$& does one change this setting? Right now, if I close the laptop, it goes to sleep. This is bad - for presentations, running iTunes at home... But I can not find where to change this - I've been through every section of Pref's.
View 16 Replies View RelatedSo one day I activated deep sleep from this widget like I always do when I want to keep my 100% charge and i'm traveling with my macbook and keep my stuff saved.
It didn't work. So I kept clicking. clicking. clicking. Nothing.
So I slept my mac, and woke it again and it worked.
However when I went to wake it, I just got a grey screen. I held down the power button to cold boot, and when I rebooted it booted from the RAM file like it would normally when waking from deep sleep.
But now every-time I close the laptop it goes into deep sleep.
I want to be able to use my MBP with an external display. I read the instructions on the apple website but It does not seem to work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs said, my current set up is an HDMI - DVI cable (HDMI to monitor and DVI to adapter) and my DVI - mini DisplayPort adapter, everything is connected fine but when I turn on the monitor, it says cable not found... and nothing is displayed on the screen but on the Macbook side of things, it sees the monitor is connected (I can extend the screen and leave the screen) but other than that, it appears I cannot get an image on the monitor, pressing every button on the monitor does not work either.
Any other information that may seem necessary, let me know. I tried clearing my PRAM and clearing the power and such but nothing seems to work.
I have a 27" i7. I have a 24" DVI Montior hooked up to it via MDP->DVI adaptor. When the 24" Monitor is on, everything is fine. When I turn the monitor off, the magic mouse tracking on the 27" screen stutters. I am not kidding - it took me ages to figure out that to fix I either need to turn the other monitor on OR disconnect the MDP->DVI adaptor.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there was anyway that I could get my Dell E173FP monitor to sleep when I close the lid to my macbook pro. I do not have it on mirroring mode. When I close the lid to my laptop it will just switch my desktop to the monitor instead of the monitor going to sleep with my macbook. When I press the power button and click sleep or go to the apple menu and click sleep it will work though. This really irritates me and I would like It to sleep when I close the lid instead of having to do more.

I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.
Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?
I have been using the latest macbook pro 13.3" since April 2010. Over the last week the monitor suddenly goes completely white and the external monitor goes black. The laptop becomes unresponsive although the programmes opened continue running (e.g a skype voice call would continue without interruption although the monitor is all white).
The only solution at the moment is to press the turn off button for a few seconds then switch the laptop on again. It will then work normally until for no apparent reason this happens again.
My computer won't start, the monitor dosn't come on, and the sleep light blinks constantly.

Is there a way to use my external monitor as my only monitor when connected to my mbp? Or, can i clone my display, but at separate resolutions? I am able to do this on windows with nvidia software, is there software that allows further customization?

View 3 Replies View RelatedMaybe this is a dumb question, but it seems on my system if the screensaver runs then the monitor sleeps, the screensaver is still running when i go to wake the monitor. does that mean its been running the whole time wasting cpu cycles and drawing more power than is necessary? you'd think it would stop.

I am running an adaptor to my G5 from the ADC monitor (DVI to ADC).The screen usually runs fine when I reset the monitor or turn it off but as for when I put it to sleep, no such luck..This has happened once before and last time I just waited and randomly turned it on a couple days later and boom, the screen booted up.I have tried basic options, like resetting the computer several times, pulling the power cable out of the G5 for several minutes and even a PRAM reset but nothing seems to have made it work as of yet.I assume it's within the G5 as it has happened a few times and the monitor works fine when I test it on other computers..Also as I mentioned before this is not the first time it occured and it just randomly seems to come on whenever.

I installed Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac and my monitor keeps going to sleep while I am using it. I need to push the power button to turn it back on. And sometimes I have to hold the power button down to restart it and reboot the machine.
