MacBook Pro :: External Display - Monitor Doesn't Sleep Properly

Jun 25, 2012

Have a brand new MBP 13" using Thunderbolt-DVI adapter with my old Dell 2405 LCD. Have an interesting scenario ... when the display goes to "sleep" there is still some type of signal coming out of the display port.  The monitor will stay on and just blink "NO SIGNAL DETECTED ON INPUT 2".  But the monitor actually still stays on.When I put the entire laptop to sleep them the monitor will properly power down to sleep mode.

I don't think its the monitor because I've used this monitor with a number of different machines and graphics cards, in every scenario when I had the display set to sleep it powered off just fine.

MacBook Air :: Doesn't Detect External Monitor Connected Through Mini Display Port To HDMI Adapter

Sep 8, 2014

I bought a MBA 13" last month and now I'm trying to connect an external monitor through a Mini Display Port-to-HDMI adapter and most of the times the display shows a message "No signal detected"...

I've tried all the possible combinations between the MAC and the Monitor but it would seem a random matter.

Hardware :: U2410 Monitor With MBP - Wouldn't Sleep Properly

Nov 1, 2009

I just bought a Dell U2410 to use as an external monitor (connected with DVI) with my MBP. After initial problems getting the best calibration setup I'm now very happy with it except for one annoyance. The problem: When the MBP puts its display to sleep the Dell monitor goes into sleep mode and then immediately wakes up and then goes back into sleep mode, cycling like this indefinitely.

MacBook :: Using External Monitor With New MB (2.4GHz)/monitor Sleep?

Oct 16, 2008

I picked up a new MacBook yesterday and I noticed a weird issue when coming out of "monitor sleep" mode, not regular sleep mode.

When I move the mouse, the external monitor shows what you see in the picture, kinda like a TV with no signal. The MacBook screen works fine so what I just do is unplug and re-plug in the DVI plug and everything is good again.

My 24 inch Dell monitor worked fine with my M1330 and other computers so I know it's not that. Does anyone have the same issue or maybe give me some light on this?

MacBook Pro :: Why Won't It Startup Properly Without External Monitor And Keyboard

Mar 14, 2012

If I connect a external monitor and keyboard to my late 2011 Macbook Pro (running Lion) it starts up just fine. But if I try to start it up without these (or any other devices) attached, I get no display on the internal screen and the internal keyboard is ignored (the caps lock light doesn't light up when the key is pressed). However, I don't think it's a hardware issue, as a PRAM reset seems to work (I get the second chime) indicating that the keyboard is OK. And I get a second or so of grey screen before the screen goes black. I've tried resetting my SMC and my PRAM. The latter seemed to fix the problem once - but then it came back, and won't go away again this time. I've also tried starting in safe, single user, and verbose mode, but none of these seem to make any difference. I've been having some issues installing Windows (under both BootCamp and Parallels) but wouldn't have thought that these were related.

OS X :: Can't Get MacBook To Connect Properly To Samsung External Monitor XL2370

Apr 26, 2010

I used to have a mac Mini that connected so effortlessly to the monitor and allowed the full resolution (1920x1080). But I'm trying to do that with my MacBook (as I recently sold my Mini) and I'm unable to get it to do what I want to. I have Snow Leopard. It would not allow me to do anything until I updated the OS. The monitor was not recognized at all. Except I noticed when I plugged it in, the macbook screen would flash...so I figure it's recognizing something. But in display settings, detect display wouldn't show anything, neither would restarting. That is, until I updated Snow Leopard.... Anyone know why this might be? And now that I've been able to get something on the display, I'm still not at all satisfied. The resolution is terrible. It will not allow me to choose anything other than the resolution on my macbook screen, but over 23" it just looks terrible. Not only that, but the Macbook screen stays on. I want the mb screen to go off, and full resolution be on the external monitor. I can choose another option for an extended desktop but that's just ridiculous. I have no desire for anything like that.

Intel Mac :: A Website Doesn't Display Properly On It

May 27, 2012

I own both an iMac and a MacBook.Lately I've been trying to use [URL] and while the website does work, it displays totally wrong on my iMac ?I looked at all I could think of (not a newbie, but not savvy enough to go look in the coding to look for errors there). The one section from the site which displays correctly is one without a menu on both right and left. It's a blog. Here's a clue, I guess. I tried with both Safari 5.1.6 and Firefox 13.0, with the exact same result. But on my Macbook it displays perfect! I am using Firefox 12.0 on it. So I downgraded to Firefox 12.0 on the iMac... no success.Of course I also cleared the cache, closed the browser, and the computer... no luck.I then removed all plugins, since it was the only remaining difference...I thought it could be a difference in display... altough I couldn't see how... I changed it from 1920x1080 to the ones similar to my Macbook's (1280x1024 and 1280x720)... Of course it was the same, just more blurry. It doesn't make sense and I hate it when it doesn't make sense!Of course I hate it even more that I can't use that website on my iMac!!! (or with a lot of hassle).

MacBook Pro :: Detects An External Monitor But No Display On The Monitor?

Aug 5, 2009

As said, my current set up is an HDMI - DVI cable (HDMI to monitor and DVI to adapter) and my DVI - mini DisplayPort adapter, everything is connected fine but when I turn on the monitor, it says cable not found... and nothing is displayed on the screen but on the Macbook side of things, it sees the monitor is connected (I can extend the screen and leave the screen) but other than that, it appears I cannot get an image on the monitor, pressing every button on the monitor does not work either.

Any other information that may seem necessary, let me know. I tried clearing my PRAM and clearing the power and such but nothing seems to work.

Mac :: Macbook Pro On External Monitor Will Not Sleep On Its Own

Jan 5, 2010

have a (late 2008) unibody Macbook Pro connected to an external monitor via mini-displayport to HDMI. The MBP is closed and the external monitor is my only display. I have a USB hub connected to the MBP which is connected to a mouse, keyboard, external HDD, etc.My problem is, the computer won't go to sleep unless I manually select the option from the menu. In the Energy Saver settings, the monitor and computer are both set to go to sleep at 15 and 20 minutes, respectively, and the monitor goes to sleep just fine. The computer never does, as indicated by the solid white indicator light on the front of the MBP and the fact that it stays warm after not being used for hours.

OS X :: External Monitor Not Working Properly With Snow Leopard

Jan 17, 2010

Recently I installed the Snow Leopard OS on my Macbook Pro, previously I had 10.5 installed. However, now when I connect my Macbook to my flatscreen TV (Panasonic Plasma), using a mini display port cable to an HDMI cable, there's a black border around the edges of the picture. Before the Snow Leopard upgrade I was able to view the entire screen area of the Plasma TV, without any borders. The only thing I've done differently since then is install Snow Leopard. Does anyone know how I can fill the screen with image without using the zoom option on the TV screen, as the zoom cuts off some image at the top and bottom?

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Wake From Sleep If Attached To External Monitor

Mar 25, 2012

This started recently and is quite annoying.  Like the title says, if I put my computer to sleep via apple menu/sleep while it is attached to my external monitor the computer will not "wake up".  When I try to wake up the computer the sleep indicator stops pulsing and I can hear the hard drive start spinning.  As a result I must force shut down the computer by holding the power button.  The computer is fully charged so it is not a low battery issue.  The external monitor is an 20" Apple Cinema Display, it is attached via Apple's DVI connector.

Unplugging the monitor dongle and replugging it in do not work.  Pressing any assortment of keys does not bring the display back up.

I've tried resetting PRAM, disk permissions, and verifying the disk.

I would like to know how to turn off the macbook display without having to close it. I want to know that because if i don't close the macbook, both displays are on. If i close the macbook, the computer goes to sleep and then i press some keys on keyboard and the mac wake. In that point, if i open my macbook the display is turned off like i want. But i don't want to have to close the macbook all the time, and i don't want to leave the macbook closed because closed the temperature goes high.

Hardware :: USB Ports On LED Cinema Display - Monitor Sleep

Jan 20, 2009

I just got a new MacBook Pro and 24-inch LED Cinema Display. I was planning on using one of the USB ports on the back of the display to connect a 1 Tb WD My Book drive as Time Machine backup. I've managed the first backup and everything seemed to be working fine, but occasionally when I wake the computer from sleeping I get an error saying that I disconnected my drive without ejecting it. Nothing has been disconnected, so I'm worried that the USB ports don't stay powered on when monitor/computer sleep, or that there is some other issue using a USB peripheral that is for all intents and purposes plugged into another USB peripheral. Has anyone else had these issues? I'd rather keep things connected the way they are right now- I have 4-5 other external drives I need to access on a regular basis, so going directly into the USB on my MacBook isn't an appealing option.

First thing, I've barely used OS X, let alone with an external monitor. How well does OS X handle it? Is it pretty simple, and can I set separate backgrounds for each display?

Secondly, will the GPU handle it alright, or will it be sluggish when I hook up the external? I'll mostly be using the 20" to do Photoshop work, with occasional video editing (though I have other computers available to do rendering on.)

OS X :: Unable To Show 10.6 Install On External Monitor / Grey Box On External Display With Black Bar

Feb 27, 2009

I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 Core Duo, and I'm wanting to install 10.6, but about a year ago, I cracked my screen to the point that I cannot make anything out on it, and haven't replaced it. Instead, I have just been using it in clamshell mode, which has worked out fine so far. My problem is that I cannot get the 10.6 install to show up on my external monitor.

I searched around, and could only find one other similar thread that just ended with the author putting it in clamshell and having it work fine. When I boot to the install and close the screen, I just get a grey box on my external display with a black bar on either side of it. I can't seem to find any other resources, so I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
