MacBook Pro :: Dropped Coffee Now Keyboard Broken And Trackpad Sticky

Jan 7, 2011

I had a bit of an accident and dropped some coffee on my Macbook Pro 13" Unibody. It's been about a week, I didn't touch anything because I wanted it to dry but it seems something went wrong and the keyboard just won't work anymore. The backlight still works and the trackpad still works too, although it has gotten a bit sticky (like the keyboard). I didn't have AppleCare for this computer, and am still in my first year of warranty.

Is there any chance that I could work out a deal with Apple about buying AppleCare and them fixing this? Considering AppleCare would be 219.99 since I am a full-time student, this would be a way better deal for me then having to pay for the Uppercase (which, as it seems, is the only way to fix my keyboard) which starts at around 280$, plus labour (which I would do myself). Otherwise, does anyone know a good website for refurbished parts for Macbook Pro (in my case, the Upper case with keyboard and trackpad)?

MacBook :: Broken Top Case Ribbon Cable (Keyboard And Trackpad)

Jun 2, 2010

Unfortunately I seem to have broken the cable to the top case (keyboard and trackpad) of my older black MacBook 4,1 A1181. A top case from another black MacBook works immediately on the machine, so I know the error is found and I need the top case fixed now. Do you know if it's possible to fix/replace that cable, or do I need to buy a whole new topcase with both keyboard and trackpad?

OS X :: MacBook Pro Arrow Key Broken (Spilled Coffee)

Sep 20, 2009

So all of a sudden, my Macbook Pro's down arrow stopped working. This appears to be the only key that is broken. I might have spilled a splash of coffee in the area several weeks ago, but it only recently stopped working. I took the key off and wiped it with a q-tip and water, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I also used compressed air, also with no positive results.

I run:
Model Name:MacBook Pro
Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:2.4 GHz

MacBook Air :: Rev B. Air Trackpad Button Sticky?

Mar 27, 2009

My MBA's trackpad button is weird, i bought the computer brand new and from day one the button seems to be a little off. You can click it but sometimes you have to work really hard to keep it clicked. i.e. if i'm dragging a window sometimes it just stops holding the window. Also double clicking is difficult and clicking on different parts of the button is difficult. Do you think it's enough to take it in to the bar?

MacBook Pro :: Spill Sticky Drink On Trackpad - Not Register Movements

Jan 10, 2010

I've just, rather stupidly, spill a sticky drink on my mid-2009 macbook pro. I've managed to dry some of it off and wipe it down but it is still sticky. Nothing went on the keyboard thankfully, but it all went on the trackpad. Now my trackpad feels all sticky and won't register any movement of my fingers. When it does, it only moves a couple of millimeters on the screen and stops again Also, wherever I click, it only registers the right click. Luckily I managed to attach a bluetooth mouse and use that to switch it off. Also, the mouse seemed to jitter and wander when I am not touching to trackpad. Another thing I noticed is that the performance dropped rapidly when I spill the drink.

MacBook :: Keyboard Damaged After Coffee Spill?

Apr 30, 2012

I spilled coffee on my macbook about a month ago and put it into a bag of rice for a week to try and get the moisture out.. but it had been turned on for a while after it was spilled, so had already done some damage. Basically, the hard drive seems to be completely in tact: all of my files are still there, unharmed, and the screen works perfectly.Only a few of the keys on the keyboard, however, work... basically just the top row, space bar, and enter keys. Also, the mouse pad stll works to move your finger around on, but every time i click with it it acts as if the CONTROL key is being pressed down, and therefore uses a "right-click" function rather than a normal click! this is ok for opening some things?I sm a broke student and am trying to work out how to fix this with the least money possible.. have seen online that you can buy an entire top case for the mac and replace that (my house mates are fairly computer savvy and would be able to d that for me)... but how do i know if this will fix it? could it be something with the logic board instead?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Working But Some Buttons Are Sticky

Jan 20, 2008

I spilled some red bull on my brand new macbook, it wasn't much, I let it dry and I cleaned the outside. Everything works fine, the keyboard works too, every single key works. But some of them are sticky! And it is very uncomfortable to write on! Obviously with these keyboard designs I can't take the keyboard off and clean under it, and I don't want to take it to the Apple store because it's not really damaged and they won't cover spills. Is there a way to clean under the keys to clean out the stickyness?

MacBook :: Sticky Spill On Keyboard - Some Buttons Not Working

Jul 25, 2009

I spilled coffee patron (which is a syrup-like coffee flavored tequila) on some keys on my macbook 13" last night. I immediately flipped it upside down and wiped it dry. I then wet a cloth to try to save it from stickiness. It was fine but today the space bar, the "b", "command", "option", & "control" keys are very sticky. Also my caps lock, tab and the squiggly dash (that's use to abbreviate the word approximately above the tab key) are not sticky but don't work at all! My caps lock wont even light up! I would like to remove the keys to wipe under it before taking it to apple care. (which will most likely turn me down.)

MacBook Air :: Spilled Coffee On The Keyboard And Wont Accept Password

May 4, 2008

Brand new macbook air. Got a coffee spill on it.

Immediately shut it off and cleaned what I could up, but some coffee got in the keys on the right hand side.

So now, when booting, there is no 'BONG' start up. It asks for a password to login, but it won't accept the right password (like the keys are pressing the wrong buttons) - pressing the 'enter' key during this process puts a character up in the password screen like a different key is being pressed.

Can't log into it. Haven't disassembled it yet to see what I can see, but looking for advice. My wife just bought this for her business (first nice thing she's ever bought herself) and is mortified to have spilled coffee in it after only 4 days.

MacBook :: Coffee Spill - Still Turns On, But Mouse And Keyboard Are Faulty

Apr 26, 2009

I recently spilled a little bit of coffee on the corner of my MacBook. It didn't get past the F key and only was about three rows of keys. Less than 1/8 cup.

I immediately pulled the power plug and turned it off.

I left it to dry for a day upside down and turned it on. Everything seemed fine, except that after a little while the mouse started to right click on its own and when I typed, it was a combination of letters and numbers.

So I spilt a cup of apple juice over my Alum. Macbook and it seemed fine at the time after I tried to dry it. But now around 5 or 6 of the keys are really sticky, and take a while for them 'rise' again after being pressed. Has anyone got any tips on how to clean the keyboard properly? Or should I just take it into Apple?

It's my clumsiness that's got me into this. Last week I spilled what seemed to be a small amount of coffee (black, nothing added) on a small area of my keyboard. I turned it over and let it drain and then turned it up on end to make sure all liquid drained out and then dried. However, now a few of my keys sometimes lock up on me and won't press down easily. Is there anything I can do to restore the way the keys operate?

OS X :: Spilled Coffee On Keyboard - Not All Keys Behaving Correctly

Feb 18, 2010

I just spillt my coffee on my macbook keyboard. The spill was localized to my keyboard, fortunately, and no other components were affectes, which is great. All my letters and numbers are 100% there. Some of my punctuation is a bit off - my apostrophes become semicolons, for example, I don:t know what to do. I:ve also got a bunch of other odd problems going on but only when holding down shift. I removed my ram and reinstalled it as part of my clean. Because a lot of my punctuation issues only occur with modifier keys, I think I might have broken something during the deep clean )I was messing with RAM, etc...0 but I:m not to experiences with hardware repair.

What should i do??? Do you think it really is software and updating my keyboard firmware will do good? should I go to iFixIt and pick up a new keyboard? given a guide, I could do the repair myself if it comes to it.My backup plan is to do a full heart transplant - pull the HD and put it in another computer. I love my alumium macbook though, and I hope it doesn:t come to that.

MacBook Pro :: Trackpad Not Register Every Click / Delete Key Broken

Nov 24, 2009

I've had my 13" unibody Macbook Pro for a few months now and I've loved it, until now. The delete key on my keyboard has almost completely broken. It doesn't pop like the other keys. It's muddy and now unresponsive, working only 1 out of 3 hits. Additionally, my track pad doesn't register every click now. It works at about the same rate, 1 out of 3 or so. Should I take it in to an Apple Store? The nearest one to me is about an hour and a half away.

He restarted by holding the Power button, and it go to the log-in screen, but he can't type anything, or use the trackpad. He has tired restarting several times and no luck. He also tried an external Keyboard/Mouse and that didn't work.

He did plug in a Flash drive and the light turned on, so the USB ports are at least getting power, but nothing is working.

MacBook Pro :: Broken Display And Now Seltzer / Spritzed Keyboard

Jul 27, 2010

The weary saga of an unhappy Macbook Pro. I helped my mom buy a 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa MBP from a fellow I know who was upgrading. Decent shape, but apple care was expired: $500. All was good until she dropped it and cracked the display. She brought it with her to visit me and see about my replacing the screen. My daughter went in to say goodnight to her the other night and knocked a can of seltzer on it! Now the keyboard is not working. The computer boots up fine, runs applications fine, works with an external monitor and the trackpad works, but only a few keys work and those that do repeat.

So, the screen: replacing screen seems to be $200-250 in parts plus my labor (ifixit tutorial looks daunting! I'll replace a HD any old day, but this makes me a bit apprehensive) or $350 labor included from techrestore site. The keyboard: A replacement keyboard from ifixit is $87. Is there a way to tell if it's just the keyboard or a problem on the logic board other than taking mine apart and swapping out parts (I have the same model)? Is the screen replacement that difficult? I'm reasonably capable, but it looks daunting. Putting $3-450 into the computer seems to be still worth it since she can't afford a new computer (not even this really) and other than the replaceable broken parts it's still a solid machine.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And Trackpad Freezing

Dec 24, 2009

i'm having problems with my keyboard and trackpad freezing at times. Sometimes it will freeze completely, no keys working except for the power button. other times it will freeze for just a few seconds then unfreeze itself. the first scenario is esp bad because if im working on a project or typing a paper and it freezes, im SOL. sometimes it'll even freeze u when i turn it on. when the main screen comes up i cant move the mouse and the aforementioned problem starts. sometimes i have to turn it on and off 3 or 4 times before i can use it again. also, my keys sometimes "stick", and by stick i mean they will repeat itself after i've stopped touching the key. it's not literally stuck down, but it keeps putting the same letter (or doing the same function) until i push a couple more buttons.

anyone have similar problems? i've tried everything i can think of. the only thing left is to reformat the hard drive. I want to use time machine afterwards but i'm afraid if its a software issue, i'll just put it back on my computer after the reformat.
