MacBook Pro :: Any Way To Know When Machine Was First Used?
Jul 31, 2010
I want to buy a macbook pro, it's an older model and it's on a big discount with limited stock. Is there a way to know when a macbook pro was first used? I don't want to get a macbook that has been on the show room floor with the backlights on for tons of hours, I have a macbook that already had a screen replacement because of the time used up on the backlight.

Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.

Running Mac 10.7.4 on two macbook pros Upgraded to a new machine. I can print via the old machine but cannot install to the new machine. Old macbook pro has printers installed and will print via OS print sharing. Is there a way to copy drivers from old machine to new machine without migrating? I'm tired of carrying an old machine around to connect to network printers.

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines in
/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/
The instructions here
[URL]
explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?

I have a desktop G5 that I'm in the process of selling. I have been using Time Machine for my backups and am picking up a MacBook Pro to replace it as my requirements are now much more mobile.
My question is simply this; can I restore my system, backed up from my G5, to my new MacBook?

I Just reinstall the MacBookPro from zero, without Time Machine, because some App was making a mess. In this new installing, my mac have another "machine name" and "HDD name" because I can't remember the old ones, so the Time Machine don't recognise the bucks-up, When I enter from Finder in the disk of TM, I see all the backups and files, but when I enter from the App TM, It's Clean.
So how I can "Rename" the TM Bucks-up so I can restore only the file that I want not all ?

I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

The MacBook Air video card is very limited to run HD movies, and when you run Parallels accessing a Vm, the video performance is very poor. I would like to know if installing Windows through BootCamp, could increase this performance.
1 - Any one knows if there's some advantage on installing Windows through BootCamp instead of Vm?
Note: One desvantage is that TimeMachine can not auto backup BootCamp partition, but it "yes" do backups the Vm.

Just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday (13" lower end model) and let it sit overnight transferring files from a Time Machine backup of my old iMac. Brought the machine to work today on a full charge and discovered I had less than two hours of battery time remaining. Fired up Activity Monitor and discovered the dock was using 95-100% of the CPU. Did lots of research online but couldn't come up with any tricks to solve this dilemma. I did have an Admin acount on my iMac, however. Logged into that, and voila: the dock issue went away.
Question is: what should I do next? I had a lot of older software on my iMac that got moved over in the transfer and I suspect something is causing the issue. What is the best way to "start over", as it were? I have this functioning Admin account, so should I just create a new user account from here and re-import all of my files (except for the software, which I can reinstall on a "as needed" basis).
My old machine gave me no trouble so it's frustrating to have this beautiful new laptop experiencing problems on it's very first day of life!

I just recently purchased a new macbook pro, see sig. At first it ran awesome. Now all of a sudden its very laggy while scrolling on web pages, even without heavy flash content. My magic mouse is also slightly unresponsive. It tracks very slowly, and is choppy while following my movements. I know it is not just the mouse because It worked fine on my other computer. At this point, I have tried restarts, battery pulls, etc. And nothing seems to be working. At this point I am considering a complete OS re install. It seems really bad when Its hooked up to my external monitor.

I have a powerbook g4, i had osx 10.4 installed on my machine, but it stopped loading, whilst i was a abroad, so i had my brother post me the bootup original cds, but they got lost in the post. i then got my hands on a 10.3 version, but realised they dont work, so i wiped my hard drive via using target mode with a intel mac.
When my computer loads with the cd, it first goes to a apple folder, which then starts the cd, and runs it. i then get a kernal panic message.
Any advice on how to install the osx 10.3 on my machine? i've read loads of articles and forum disscussions but i have had no luck.
I have also tried loading the cd via target mode, with a intel mac but it does not allow me, it says the cd has to run on the computer it is being installed on?

So my MBP has some funky display issues so I'm going to bring it to the Apple Store this weekend. Before I go I want to make sure everything is backed up on time machine incase they need to replace the whole unit or keep it for a few days to repair it. If they lost my data or had to give me a replacement one would I just be able to hook up my USB HDD and let Time Machine bring the new MBP back to it's old condition?
Would all of my program and settings be just as I left them? Bookmarks in Chrome?
Would all my iTunes purchases still exist as they do now?
Would I need to authorize iTunes again (using up another one of the five allowed.

I've owned my macbook air for less than 12 hours, and it's already f'd. I normally use a time-capsule to back up my old macbook. I had filevault turned on, on my old macbook (and so I guess it was also applied to the data on the time-capsule) -I turned on my new MBA and told it to take all the macbook data (including login profiles etc) off of my time capsule. I figured this would be easier than migrating components of the data over.-Now, I can't login to my profile on my new macbook air. I have the right password, but it's saying that filevault can access the data, or something. Maybe it's because it's not recognizing the new machine. -At this point, I just want to start fresh with the macbook air. I stuck that little reboot key in the usb port and re-installed the software. Unfortunately, after I did that, the old login profile (which I can't access) were still on there. I get it - I'm bad with computers. Even with the really user-friendly, idiot-proof ones.

I have a 13" MBP which I bought a few months ago. Everything works fine, battery life is wonderful, it couldn't be better. A few weeks ago it began "chiming" about every 20 minutes. One single tone - not a beep - more like the chime from a tuning fork. No message is displayed on the screen when it occurs. Sometimes it happens when I'm using the machine (normally web browsing). Other times it chimes when the screen is closed down and I'm re-charging. It doesn't happen when I start up. I've even checked to make sure there are no other browsing screens opened in the background.

As soon as Time Machine starts up everything else my MBP works on slows down to taking about 10 times as long. This is not the initial backup, this is the hourly backup since the initial has completed. Time Machine is backing up to an xServe in my office network with both the ethernet cable and wireless connections working.
In fact, when I clicked the in the top left of the screen to get my MBP's specs it took 13 seconds to show the dropdown menu.
Anyone have any suggestions? Specs below.
10.6.5/2.53 GHz Intel Core i5/4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I just got a new Macbook Pro and would like to transfer accounts/data from my old machine that was backed up using Time Machine. On the initial boot, I chose to transfer over my entire account and did not check off the options for applications or files and folders. Right now it appears that its transferring everything, including documents which is what I want.
My question is I am assuming it will transfer over my applications too (they reside in the Applications folder under my account, right?) Will all the applications transfer over and if so, will they be accessible by all accounts or will I have to do it over? If I screw up will I be able to try another restore from the same backup or will it be overwritten?

SO, in my attempt to install the BSE (BestSkinsEver) clear skin to help protect the macbook from scratches, i scratched my macbook from using a credit card (as suggested by BSE).... im really pissed off because i felt like i barely pressed on the credit card.... Anyways, i tried to see if i could just buy a new top component case (the top of the macbook) and just switch it out but according to my local apple store they only sell it as one unit (with lcd, etc...) which runs $800+.

I had a late 2007 MacBook Pro which I sold, and now I have a Late 2008 MacBook Pro being shipped to me. Before I shipped my old one off, I made sure to backup with Time Machine. Will I run into problems if I just pop the Leopard disk into my new MacBook Pro and restore from the Time Machine backup? If so, what are my options? I neglected to make a Carbon Copy Cloner backup from which I could use the migration assistant...

I moved at the beginning of the month. Got internet transferred on the 12th. Internet has been acting funny for about 3 weeks (yes, starting a few days before the move). Time Machine has been doing fine for this whole time. Suddenly, last night, while on the internet, a message about Airport and Time Machine popped up. It was late, so I closed my computer with the intention of fixing it this morning. Opened book this morning to find no airport signal, no network with my name on it, no connection to Time Machine, can't locate all of my backups, can no longer finish a backup...
