MacBook Pro :: 2008 MBP 2.4GHz With 10.6.2, Can I Get 8GB Ram
Nov 25, 2009
the 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro from October 2008, and I was planning on getting 8GB ram, I was wondering if it is possible for me to get 8GB or is 6GB the max for me. I'm running 10.6.2 if this makes a difference? Also if 8GB is not possible for me, and I'm gonna lose dual channel anyway, should I get one 4GB and have 5GB total, or is 2X2GB (retain dual channel) better than 5 (4GB + 1GB) or 6GB (4GB + 2GB) of Ram?

I'm looking to grab one of these new MBP's in the next few days, but as an admittedly,.I'll be mostly using my MBP for DJ and Logic work, as well as the occasional Illustrator or Photoshop project, along with some movie watching. No games or 3D stuff necessary..66 make a justifiable difference over the 2.4? I'm planning on getting 8gb with the 2.4, doing the 7200rpm upgrade and getting a HR screen on whichever one I choose, but just wanna make sure my going with a cheaper processor and more RAM isn't shooting myself in the foot down the road more than getting a slightly faster proc with less RAM.

The number stand for different version? The larger the number, the better it is? What does GHz stand for?

Which would be the better choice? Is the price difference justifiable?
I am a photographer so I do a lot of tethered shooting through capture one and a lot of photo editing in Photoshop. I have an eizo 24" external display I can hook up to but I feel the 17" with its high resolution and anti glare would be useful for location shoots so my question: Is the higher price and old technology worth it for the bigger antiglare screen and bigger harddrive for what I am using it for?

My 15'' 2.4ghz MacBook Pro will only wake up from sleep about 50% of the time. I have tried waiting for several minutes, but the only solution seems to be holding down the power button, and then restarting. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

I placed my order for 1.4GHz - 4GB ram - 128GB immediately after the online store is up, but now I got little hesitated on whether to cancel this order and have a 1.6GHz upgrade. How much differences in performance?

So I still haven't decided on which air I want yet.
If I go for the 11.6in, is the upgrade from 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz worth $100?
It seems very minimal to me but I'd like some thoughts.

I would like your opinions about Macbooks. I have a White Macbook 2.4GHZ, 4GB Ram and i would like to know if the new aluminium macbook is faster than mine. My friend just got the new aluminium macbook but it seems like there's no big difference in performance apart from the screen.

I decided earlier this year that I was going to get a Macbook Pro to replace my ugly tablet and it's terrible, grainy screen. I knew there was a pending refresh and so I waited and waited and finally the refresh came. I quickly put a bunch of stuff on eBay so that I could order my new MBP and it arrived this morning. My first reaction was "Wow, that's a small box". I opened it and I quickly noticed how solid the computer was and the lack of tacky stickers all over it was refreshing. I turned it on, set it up and began to play. The first thing that I noticed was odd was that there was no true maximize button. I kept wanting Chrome to take up the whole screen, but I quickly realized that the window was the perfect size to fit the content, if it were larger I'd just have lots of blank white space on the right side. This way is clearly more useful.

Can I use my 15" i5 2.4GHz MBP in "Clamshell Mode" connected to my 23" Samsung display without a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard connected?I realize I'd have no control over the system without an external mouse of keyboard, but if I am just watching a movie on the larger display, I'd love to just close the shell on the MBP

I recently ordered this refurbished MBP off of the Apple website:
15.4-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
2GB memory
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor; and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
250GB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVDR DL/DVDRW/CD-RW)
Built-in iSight camera
Illuminated keyboard
I thought I got a good deal ($1299) but now that I think about it, I'm kind of upset that it does not have the built in battery. I wanted to ask about how many hours this MBP will last and if it was significantly less than the new MBPs with the built in battery. I don't use any graphic-intensive programs but I'd still like a long-lasting battery. I'm thinking about returning this one once I receive it and purchase the refurbished 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" with 4GB memory and the built in battery instead.

Awhile back this MBP 17" Hi-Res was dropped on the upper left corner. After that the backlight no longer functioned properly. I first tried replacing the inverter board which didn't help. I finally got around to replacing the whole screen today. Fired the thing up. Display looked great. It worked for about an hour before I heard a weird noise from the computer and the backlight went out again.

I'm wondering if I will see much speed gains going from my late 2007 macbook with a 2.2Ghz core 2 duo processor(santa rosa?) to the new 13" macbook pro with the 2.4 GHz core 2 duo. I couldn't find a consistent set of benchmarks between the two computers.

I have a MacBook Pro 13inch 2.4GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, SD card slot, up to 10 hour battery life) bought in October 2010. The charger has been playing up for a while now - the light going out but coming back on when I move the cable a bit - faulty connection it seems. It has now stopped working at all. Apple UK charge a whopping £65 for a replacement - and the reviews are AWFUL for it, but I can't use my MBP without one.

Could keep going with classes and meetings, with enhanced dictation feature which is built-in the Maverick OS and a micrphone, so my mother could be able to see on the screen what other people are saying to her. I have read that these applications use a lot of resources, and for the case of the commercial application Dragon Dictation, they recomend a 2Ghz processor. Whether a Mac Book Air with 1.4GHz i5 processor and 4Gb RAM would perform well for this task?

I'm debating between the 1.4 and 1.6ghz 11.6" macbook air.
For most activities I do, I'm thinking the faster disk access is more important than the CPU speed. I currently have a 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro, 2.26ghz.
The only thing I've noticed that I really need a fast CPU for is watching video, 720p or 1080p especially flash video.
Can the 1.4ghz display smooth 720p video from VLC or Youtube (flash)?

I've seen many saying that they have payback problems on youtube watching HD videos. But my problem is that the video that I'm streaming, regardless of quality, will often stop while streaming [however the audio continues], then all of a sudden the video fast forwards to catch up to the audio that it is currently playing.

if there is anyway to lock the wifi card of my macbook to only use (a) 5.2ghz ?
At my work place we have a lot of repeaters and some are on 5ghz and some on 2.4ghz, On my pc I can manage the driver settings to only run on 5ghz and the result is a much faster connection with better perfomance than my macbook air.

I got the computer on April 8th and am still under the 14 day return period and was wondering if you guys thought that i could go to apple and return this model for the 2.4ghz model (extra $300)... and if it was worth it....

By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?
From:
[URL]
The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?
From:
[URL]
Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.
Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

I bought the correct Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and 3.5mm audio cable for my black macbook 2.4GHz in order to project and watch movies, etc. When I hook everything up, the MacBook display settings recognize another display immediately. However the Samsung doesn't see anything connected into the VGA input. I know its not the Samsung HDTV because I had an '08 HP laptop hooked up just fine a few months ago. Should I try different resolutions? I searched the forums for awhile but nata.

Currently owing the top of the line i7, and after reading a lot about the antiglare and its high resolution I went to the Apple store (twice) to check and compare both screens. I spent around 2.5 h trying to make my mind, looking at different angles, playing movies, launching applications, etc. I was almost giving up in trying to find a solution for this when an apple store rep. talked to me. His suggestion was to look at the same picture on both computers at full screen. He said that for photos and prints, the antiglare image will be closer to what you get in the prints (with out any extra monitor calibration off course). When I started looking at the pictures very closely and with detail, I could see that the clarity and quality of the same picture was better and "crispier" on the antiglare than on the stock glossy resolution. That was my turn point and made my decision on the antiglare high res. There are other reasons why I wanted the antiglare, like the reflections I am getting in my home; but really the point was made once I looked at the clarity of the pictures in the high res screen compared with the standard res.
One point I noticed in the high res screen was that the only application where I could say the fonts were really small and maybe uncomfortable for me was on iWork applications. The icons for the format bar were really small. But in Office, everything seem OK for my eyes (I need glasses for long distance sight). I can say that by looking at both machines at home, the glossy colors look more vivid, and that the viewing angles are better than the antiglare which looks a little bit like washed off to me. But still, prefer not to have reflections and the crispier pictures.................
