View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a used MBA, I always want one when it first came out, finally wait until now because of the big price drop My first mod to my MBA is to upgrade the hard drive. I wasn't pay much attention when I purchase this replacement hard disk, didn't notice the MBA only takes 5mm height, as most 1.8" in the market are 8mm. But since it's in my hand right now, I decided to put it on see if the MBA recognizes it. Not too much surprise, leopard installation went very smoothly. After the installation, the available space is about 95gb. And because of the 5400rpm, it feels faster.
Too bad the bottom won't close because of the height of this drive. But at least this gives me an idea, and I know there's a Toshiba 1.8" 120gb 4200rpm 5mm out there, and it should fits perfectly in MBA. Anyway, I'm still debating myself rather getting this Toshiba drive or a Samsung 32gb SSD(Same drive as used in the Rev.A SSD version, but different capacity) As the price of these two drives are pretty much the same (around $150 range) I have another computer for my main work, so I'm toward getting a 32gb SSD
How can I get rid of 'others' its taking up 64gb out of 120gb, Ihave downloaded omnidisksweeper but i am not sure what isn't important to delete, i have deleted all my documents and photos...
Recently the screen goes to sleep, then when i move my mouse it comes back on black with my mouse visible only ...

Added latest scores for Firmware 1199. Check out the xbench scores Woo hoo ! Just got my Vertex 120GB yesterday. Inside is a plain black box. Looks like OCZ is learning from Apple. Kinda reminds me of the iPhone packaging. The drive itself: This replaces the current WD Scorpio Blue 320GB in my Macbook 2.0 GHz Installing the Vertex couldn't be easier, but one has to use the 4 Torx screws so that the drive fits into the bay And that's what it looks like ... fitting snugly inside. I think I like the sleek black Anyways, enough of pics. Onto install notes, benchmarks and impressions. I partitioned the drive in Apple's DiskUtility. And installed OS X 10.5.5 and then updated with the 10.5.6 combo update. I then installed Office 2008 and VMWare Fusion. If you are concerned with alignment, don't be ... at least under OS X. That is because Apple's utilities do alignment on 4K (4096) byte boundaries. It's not perfect but it is better than nothing. If you figure out how to do the alignment yourself and still keep the GUID partition table with the protective MBR and 200MB EFI partition - please post it so that we can experiment with it. In the meantime let's look at the partition table. Running " sudo fdisk /dev/rdisk0 " in Terminal gives us the following output:...............

I had asked ifixit support confirmation, and they told me it will work, but from the specs page the block size il 4k and not 512.. (the reason why the 5th gen ipod hd does not work in the air).

View 24 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to grab one of these new MBP's in the next few days, but as an admittedly,.I'll be mostly using my MBP for DJ and Logic work, as well as the occasional Illustrator or Photoshop project, along with some movie watching. No games or 3D stuff necessary..66 make a justifiable difference over the 2.4? I'm planning on getting 8gb with the 2.4, doing the 7200rpm upgrade and getting a HR screen on whichever one I choose, but just wanna make sure my going with a cheaper processor and more RAM isn't shooting myself in the foot down the road more than getting a slightly faster proc with less RAM.

The number stand for different version? The larger the number, the better it is? What does GHz stand for?
the 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro from October 2008, and I was planning on getting 8GB ram, I was wondering if it is possible for me to get 8GB or is 6GB the max for me. I'm running 10.6.2 if this makes a difference? Also if 8GB is not possible for me, and I'm gonna lose dual channel anyway, should I get one 4GB and have 5GB total, or is 2X2GB (retain dual channel) better than 5 (4GB + 1GB) or 6GB (4GB + 2GB) of Ram?

So I was hoping to upgrade myself. I've already opened the mini and added memory so I'm confident enough with that. I just need to know what I need to be aware of when upgrading. For example, will ant 2.5" SATA disk do the trick? I was thinking of this one:[URL:...]

I can't figure out if it is the SD card or a corrupted disk image. Not sure how to go about recovering my data.

Which would be the better choice? Is the price difference justifiable?
I am a photographer so I do a lot of tethered shooting through capture one and a lot of photo editing in Photoshop. I have an eizo 24" external display I can hook up to but I feel the 17" with its high resolution and anti glare would be useful for location shoots so my question: Is the higher price and old technology worth it for the bigger antiglare screen and bigger harddrive for what I am using it for?
My 15'' 2.4ghz MacBook Pro will only wake up from sleep about 50% of the time. I have tried waiting for several minutes, but the only solution seems to be holding down the power button, and then restarting. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI decided earlier this year that I was going to get a Macbook Pro to replace my ugly tablet and it's terrible, grainy screen. I knew there was a pending refresh and so I waited and waited and finally the refresh came. I quickly put a bunch of stuff on eBay so that I could order my new MBP and it arrived this morning. My first reaction was "Wow, that's a small box". I opened it and I quickly noticed how solid the computer was and the lack of tacky stickers all over it was refreshing. I turned it on, set it up and began to play. The first thing that I noticed was odd was that there was no true maximize button. I kept wanting Chrome to take up the whole screen, but I quickly realized that the window was the perfect size to fit the content, if it were larger I'd just have lots of blank white space on the right side. This way is clearly more useful.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI recently ordered this refurbished MBP off of the Apple website:
15.4-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
2GB memory
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor; and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
250GB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVDR DL/DVDRW/CD-RW)
Built-in iSight camera
Illuminated keyboard
I thought I got a good deal ($1299) but now that I think about it, I'm kind of upset that it does not have the built in battery. I wanted to ask about how many hours this MBP will last and if it was significantly less than the new MBPs with the built in battery. I don't use any graphic-intensive programs but I'd still like a long-lasting battery. I'm thinking about returning this one once I receive it and purchase the refurbished 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" with 4GB memory and the built in battery instead.
Awhile back this MBP 17" Hi-Res was dropped on the upper left corner. After that the backlight no longer functioned properly. I first tried replacing the inverter board which didn't help. I finally got around to replacing the whole screen today. Fired the thing up. Display looked great. It worked for about an hour before I heard a weird noise from the computer and the backlight went out again.
